Former NFL star Plaxico Burress indicted on charges he failed to pay N.J. taxes

TRENTON — Former NFL star Plaxico Burress has been indicted on charges he failed to pay $47,903 in New Jersey income taxes, authorities said Thursday.

Burress, 37, of Totowa, faces one count of issuing a bad check or electronic funds transfer, and one count of willful failure to pay state tax. Both are third-degree charges that carry a maximum penalty of five years in state prison and a $15,000 fine.

The indictment against Burress was handed up April 22 in Mercer County, where the state's Division of Taxation is based. Authorities said the case against Burress is the first prosecution under a new N.J. law that makes a failed electronic funds transfer the same as a writing a bad check.

Burress filed his 2013 income tax return with the New Jersey Division of Taxation on Oct. 20, 2014, but the electronic payment to cover the $47,903 he owed did not go through, according to the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office. The Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services alerted Burress, but received no response, authorities said.

A criminal complaint came in February after additional efforts to reach Burress by the State Department of the Treasury's Office of Criminal Investigation were unsuccessful, according to the prosecutor's office.

His only hope of getting a job is as a coach and no decent school that pays anything will hire a head case with tax drama.

Maybe he can replace Sharpton as Obama's "Race Czar." After all, he's a tax cheat too and is just as full of shit on the subject of race...

    Burress off base

Ward said Plaxico Burress was off the mark when his former teammate accused the Steelers of putting him in "shackles" and their fans of racism.

Burress told WTAE-TV's Jon Burton recently that, with the Steelers, "I felt my opportunities were kind of limited, so to speak, and at times, I kind of felt myself like playing in shackles. They weren't going to change, and I wasn't going to change."

Burress, who signed as a free agent with the New York Giants after five years with the Steelers, told Burton that "I was never really liked in that city. I mean, I don't think I was liked as a person. I was kind of seen as a black kid, young African-American, cornrows, drives fancy cars, wears diamond earrings, things like that. They just kind of based their perception off of what I drove and what I did and things like that. All those things were never a part of any other player on that team but me."

Ward, who wears matching 2-carat diamond earrings himself, said the only prejudice Steelers fans show is against players who do not produce.

"As far as the city and him with cornrows and stuff, they love everybody. You go out there and perform, regardless of race, color, ethnic, how you wear your hair, they don't care. The fans here know football. They know the guys who produce and give it all they got and they appreciate it. To sit there and say the city had it out against him, I don't really go along with that. I saw a lot of No. 80 jerseys in the stands."
Pretty telling when a player who had just ended a holdout and was still in contentious contract talks with the team at the time (Ward) went out of his way to say just how full of it he was...

Ward, who wears matching 2-carat diamond earrings himself, said the only prejudice Steelers fans show is against players who do not produce.
And against chuckleheads who alligator-arm sure TD passes in conference championship games only to pout in the locker room afterward that "they ain't gettin' enough touches"...

Maybe he should have gone with dreadlocks instead of cornrows and he would have been more popular?
