Andrew McCutchen was the Pirates’ cleanup hitter last night for the first time since June 2, 2013, and just the 28th time in his seven-year career as Clint Hurdle decided to shake a struggling offense.
However, McCutchen acted more like a leadoff hitter in his first plate appearance. He battled the Brewers’ Jimmy Nelson for nine pitches before hitting a double.
Though McCutchen was stranded that inning — the 22nd in a row in which the Pirates failed to score — the manager cited that at-bat as helping to spark a 6-3 victory...............
