Bargain

As @RapSheet said, Ben Roethlisberger gets $99M over next five years. As I understand it, could be viewed as a four-year, $87.4M extension.

Also, Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger gets $65 million over the first three years of the deal (2015-17), which is a record

Kudos to both sides for getting this out of the way early!

Someone explain the Rooney's reasoning for NOT offering Ben $150,001 more than Aaron Rogers to be the #1 paid QB ?Roethlisberger is now the NFL's 2nd highest paid player by new money average at $21.85M per year. Aaron Rodgers is tops at $22M per year.
Doesn't make any sense.

I've read that the $99M is just the base of the salary. That doesn't include the signing bonus or incentives...
If that's the deal it's a steal and I do that every time. I thought the deal would be between $21M and $23M...so this is fine with me!! Curious to see how the contract is set up.
When rumors and reports emerged in late 2013 of Roethlisberger wanting to be traded, some (e.g., me) eventually concluded that the team possibly leaked the news in the hopes of getting Roethlisbeger to make a clear statement that he’d never leave Pittsburgh. Which eventually would be followed by Roethlisberger agreeing to a team-friendly retirement contract.
The absence of any leaks regarding the contract details suggests that a team-friendly contract was signed. Last year, Roethlisberger said the latter years of his existing contract were “kind of taking a hometown discount.” Soon, we’ll find out whether he went the rest of the way from “kind of.”

He's not "taking one for the team." He's getting paid $20M per year. That's the going rate for a top-15 quarterback; no more, no less. The 15th-best QB in the league will get paid about $20 million. The best QB in the league will get paid about $20 million. That's just the way they have it set up for whatever reason.
Once in while you get something like Manning taking a cut to $15M or Brady to $12M. THAT'S "taking one for the team." This is not. It's getting paid fairly and not being a dick by holding out for even more.
Tell me why it makes sense to do that? Just to do it? Seriously, this crap about paying your guy a record amount just because you feel like you have to beat the last blockbuster contract is one thing: Dumb. There is absolutely no reason for it.
Is Roethlisberger one of the best QBs in the game? Absolutely. Is he the best QB in the league? No, and I don't think you'll find many people who will argue that. Therefore, there is no reason to set out to break the salary record. I don't understand what people want.
See you Space Cowboy ...
