    Re: Free Agent Wishlist

Didn't most of McPhee's sacks also not come as an edge rusher, but more of a swiss army knife kind of pass rushing specialist? Sometimes off the edge on the line, sometimes standing up, sometimes from the middle?

My question is how good is McPhee at actually playing 3-4 OLB for 50 snaps per game? Same with Graham. Neither has done it yet. They have looked potentially explosive in specific pass rush situations.

I hate to say it, but McPhee and Graham are looking for the same money that Worilds is. Taking a hypothetical were all 3 of them can be signed for $7 million per year on a 4 year deal; I am starting to think that Worilds may be the best "value" because you know what you are really getting. Both McPhee and Graham kind of have a bit of the unknown to them. Is that okay for a $7 million per year FA?

Brooks Reed from Houston might be worth a look on the lower end of the OLB spectrum.

I also would look at Dan Skuta of the 49ers. When filling in for Aldon Smith last year, he recorded 33 total tackles, five sacks and three forced fumbles.

Kareem Jackson would be a great addition at corner. Chris Culliver of the 49ers would be an upgrade as well.

I like Chris Johnson at running back, as long as he understood his role. Last year was the first year he didn't gain 1,000 yards, but he still averaged 4.3 yards per carry. He can catch as well.

For wide receiver, I like Brian Hartline. I think he would be a great slot receiver. Kenny Britt would be a great addition as well. Both are probably looking to be something other than the 4th receiver though. How about Nate Washington?
Your first 4 names are guys I would like to see us pick up. Reed and Skuta seem to me like guys we sign and turn into good players. Kinda like Moats and McCain last year.

a few names I would toss out are if the price is right

    Knowshon Moreno RB
    Jonathan Dwyer RB
    Ronnie Brown RB
    Henry Hynoski ( FB )
Davon House ( listed as CB but would try him at FS )
    Buster Skrine CB
Walter Thurmond CB ( wanted him last year )
    Tramon Williams CB
The only one I like on your list is Skrine, you can keep the rest.

Also, exactly who are the studs on the Philly defense that are keeping him off the field?

I feel like if you are going to throw stupid money (and apparently Graham wants stupid money) at a pass rusher from the 2010 draft class, you may as well stick with Worilds. At least he knows the system.
Agree with you, don't like Graham at all. Not a 3-4 OLB. Really a small DE.

And he's only going to go where he gets to do what he wants, which is rush the quarterback.

That's the way free agency works.

All the better he played, he'll be lucky to get a job, especially at the amount of money he wants. And I'd be damned any player would tell me how I was going to use him. He would be out the door so fast his ass would be on fire.

Versatile enough to stay on the field as a pass rusher in a 4-3 scheme....but did virtually all of his damage from the 3-4 LB slot,

Reading the sections on Grahamn and McPhee does not sound like two players a 3-4 team would want to give a boatload of money to and then install them as their primary pass rusher.

Be interesting to see what kinds of offers those two get. McPhee's value comes from moving him around the formation. Can't really do that if you want him to be your starting OLB. Graham reminds me too much of Woodley's body type. Players tend to get heavier and slower as they age. BUt what do I really know, I'm just a grumpy guy with an internet connection!

Sheard is a monster against the run, just not much of a pass rusher at all. Maybe a change of scenery does him some good but I would rather just keep Moats.

not so sure I like this ... when you let them see the market most time you have to over pay to keep the ones you want ...

None of the Steelers free agents are going to be signed Day 1 anyway. I don't think Moats will sign elsewhere. They don't want to overpay for McCain, so they probably think a 6th round compensatory pick is better than doing that. I think McCain would rather stay, even for slightly less money, unless the offer comes from a contender, or for multiple years. The Steelers aren't going to offer McCain a multi-year deal. Nobody else on the list is worth a pre-emptive strike. In fact, I don't think they want any of the others back, unless Harrison is signed as another emergency stop gap measure in August.

While it's not surprising, there not only hasn't been a big splash, there's been no splash at all for the Steelers, despite putting in some work at clearing up cap space.

Could we be positioning ourselves to play vulture? Guys get waived as the dust settles, either to make roster space or cap casualties, and we can bring in a couple of those guys for cheap with chips on their shoulders.

    Re: Free Agent Wishlist

The Steelers have room, right now, for about a 5 million per year contract. That is it. Guys don't sign for that during the legal tampering period. At least not big name guys.

Either they bring Worilds back by the end of the week or maybe they reel in a Patrick Robinson.

Colbert likes to have a plausible (or at least is definition of plausible starter at every position before draft day). That means they could be interested in a CB, SS, and a RB.

Most likely it will be nothing.

I am hoping that the Steelers would not be as active in free agency as they were last year, but I am hoping that they will sign one guy who will upgrade CB or OLB

I was high on him the year he was drafted , just has not been the player I anticipated but he has the skills ... not sure what the issue really is as to why he did not become the player I envisioned have not seen enough of him since then to try and figure it out

Bouchette was a very good sports journalist at one time who's been coasting on reputation and mailing it in for quite a while now.

As I mentioned earlier....Graham led the league in impact plays per snap. He KNOWS that he is going to be a starter somewhere...and is asking for starter money. He will probably get about 6.5 mil a year from a team eager to land a young stud OLB.
Pretty much spot on....I think we will look back and regret not picking him up.
