LaMarr Woodley Reportedly To Be Cut By Raiders

The Raiders will be cutting one of their free-agent signees of 2014.

Oakland is set to release defensive end LaMarr Woodley, Fallon Smith of CSN Bay Area reported Sunday.

Woodley, 30, notched just five tackles in six games in 2014 before a torn biceps ended his season. Last March, he signed a two-year deal reportedly worth up to $12 million.

I don't want him back and I'm not advocating the idea, but instead I have a technical question.

We're paying him a cool 8.5 mil in dead money this season. If we signed him as a backup would we have to rework *that* deal, or would he essentially have two different contracts with us?

Edit - for instance can we rework his 2015 dead money into a three year, 13mm deal that reduced that hit to 6m this season but guaranteed him 3.5mm each in 16 and 17 too. Or are the books completely closed on dead money.

Yeah thanks for that, but I clearly said I have no interest in him. I'm curious about the legal technicalities that would be behind it.

I know what you said, I just don't want to see his lazy a$$ back in Pitt under any condition…unless he plays for free.

Has he gotten fat enough to try him at NT yet?

Nope. Dead money is frozen in place, dead forever, and it doesn't matter if you sign the player back. The new contract is piled on top of the dead money, which doesn't change. It would essentially be the same as having two different contracts for the same guy, and there would be nothing you could do to alter the first one.

That was a big reason we couldn't bring back Harrison after we cut him. No matter what, there was the dead money, and re-signing him even at a minimal salary would've meant we LOST cap space compared to before, rendering the whole thing pointless.

I think we went through the same thing with Starks - still taking a dead money hit and then re-signed him - but in that case the imbalance wasn't as severe and the need for a player was more important.

Had a couple of good seasons and could have been a superstar. He chose the road to fat & lazy.

I understand that Woodley had some interest in the NFL veteran free agent camp. But then he found out there wouldn't be a wing eating competition and beer swilling event, so opted out.
