CBSSports: William Gay apparently flagged for taunting own teammate

A week ago against the Falcons, Steelers linebacker Jason Worilds was flagged for roughing the passer. The league never fined him -- which is usually the case on personal-foul penalties -- suggesting that the NFL disagreed with the call on the field. It will be interesting to see if Steelers cornerback William Gay also avoids a fine following one official's decision to flag him for taunting on Sunday against the Chiefs.

Late in the third quarter with Pittsburgh leading Kanas City, 17-6, and the Chiefs facing a 3rd andn 16, linebacker Lawrence Timmons tackled tight end Travis Kelce for no gain. As Timmons made his way off the field, Gay stood next to him, arms crossed, presumably admiring Timmons' work.

    Gay was promptly flagged.............

That was literally the worst call I have seen since the overturned Troy interception against Indy in the divisional game, maybe worse

If there is ever a reason to fine a ref this is it. That was the most bogus blatantly wrong call I've ever seen.

Overall, this officiating crew does not deserve to be used in the playoffs. Lot of holding and illegal hands to the face penalties that were missed.

Oh well, thanks to Good L, these are the best refs he can field. At least we won, in spite of them.

They were making stuff up to keep the Chiefs in the game. Gay should know not to call attention to himself anyway, but guys get pumped up.

As much crap as I flipped Worilds last week for drawing a flag on an arguably legal hit last week... I have to give Willie Gay a pass on this.
Nobody has a reasonable expectation that you're gonna draw laundry for doing what he did. Just plain bad call.

The Cardinals "got away" with the same hit Worilds got flagged for last week near the end of the 1st quarter of that game today. I would even say it was a more violent hit because the Cardinal defender followed through with much more of his body weight than Jason did.

If anyone can post the hit it would be much appreciated.

What's next. Taunting by winking? Oh wait, winking is less subtle

The players need to demand the taunting and illegal contact/holding penalties be scaled back. This is ridiculous, there is no reason for this

I watched a little of the Dallas/Indy game and a taunting penalty was called in it early, the Indy defender was basically standing over top the Dallas player, that is taunting. What Gay did is not. Also if I may add I have been through the football officiating classes and they tell you in the class if you do not like it or feel it will become excessive then flag it. While there is a criteria that should be met for the penalty it sounds to me as it is a tool they use when they dont wanna see it.

But Marshawn Lynch doing a backwards plunge into the endzone while grabbing his nuts to celebrate a TD? That's apparently OK.

Steelers notebook: Gay respects 'anything' referees call

Steelers cornerback William Gay said he never should have put referees in a position to flag him for taunting in the fourth quarter.

“I respect anything they call,” Gay said. “You just have to roll with it.”

Gay was called for unsportsmanlike conduct when he crossed his arms and stared at Lawrence Timmons after Timmons held Travis Kelce short of a first down.

Players have been known to get fined for questioning judgment calls.

“When they are judgment calls, I don't have anything to say about the call,” safety Mike Mitchell said.

Mike Tomlin wasn't happy with the call but also refused to elaborate.

“I don't even want to get into that,” Tomlin said. “I really don't. Ridiculous.”

Photoshop or has he done this in a previous game also? In last night's game, he had the ball in his left hand and grabbed his crotch with his right. There also weren't any other Seahawk players in the picture when he did it.
I believe the game is designed to reward the ones who hit the hardest. If you can't take it, you shouldn't play!- Jack Lambert

That was a game a few years ago. Against NO? Seahawks were also in their road white uniforms.

Okay, for you tinfoil hat guys this is something to ponder: many games broke the wrong way for the NFL this weekend, including a Steelers win. What they wanted was Steelers fighting for their playoff lives in the final game. They would also like to see the Broncos beat the Bengals tonight for the same reason. Keep your eyes on tonight's game and see what breaks the Broncos get.

Okay, tinfoil hat off. I'll leave it up to you guys to determine for yourselves.

This taunting crap they had to enforce is a product of the punks they have for players nowadays. Does anyone remember this type of rule being needed in the 90's and earlier?

For the record, Gay wasn't taunting the Chiefs' player.

Nope. But back in the day, I remember ESPN giving all types of things like this airtime. Just another example of ESPNball, IMO (in general, I agree with you, Gay wan't taunting. And crossing your arms isn't "espnball" either."

These sort of penalties need to be subject to review. 15 yards and automatic first down is just too game changing to be left to a bad interpretation by a ref.

I understand what you're saying, but you do realize what'd happen in a game that had, say, five penalties a side, right? Imagine the legion of commercials we'd have to sit through, not to mention the game stoppages and break down of momentum every time a fifteen yard penalty was called.

It would be much easier if they just had the crowd decide it by a show of middle fingers.
