Ed Bouchette: Pieces Just Aren’t There

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) – 93-7 The Fan Steelers insider and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Ed Bouchette joined The Fan Morning Show on Monday to look back at the Steelers’ deflating loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Bouchette thinks that the Steelers’ defense simply doesn’t have the pieces it needs to excel, even when healthy.

I wonder: will the defense be better or worse next season with Keisel done, Worilds likely to let walk, and Harrison, Troy, and Ike likely to retire/be cut?

None of those players have really contributed anything significant this year, except Harrison in spurts. Hopefully one of the injured first-round draft picks will are least be able to make up that production.

Keisel and Troy you would just need to replace with someone of average skill at this point to break even. We may have both of those replacements on the roster right now. I don't think Troy will retire yet, though.

Worilds and Taylor - screw it, they don't produce anyway.

screw the talking horse Mr Ed ...

Saints are one of the worst defenses in the league while ours ranked in at 13th ...

we also sit with the leagues best WR and best RB and one of the better QBs ...

no reason we should not be competitive ...

now we are not a top 5 def anymore , but we also are not a 24th ranked offense ...

its game planning and player utalization that is our primary problem ... hell we are just fine vs normal teams we just suck vs bottom feeders ( Jets , Saints , Tampa ) 3 of our 5 losses

Harrison has been half decent. Meh actually doesn't deserve to be lumped in with the garbage that has been Worilds, Polamalu and Taylor.

They are going to need a 1974 style draft and coaching changes to go to a title game. Right now there are too many holes while PS is continually poached of any talent.
