Iran Loads Up Its First Nuclear Reactor

BUSHEHR, Iran — Iranian and Russian engineers began loading fuel into Iran's first nuclear power plant on Saturday, a major milestone as Tehran forges ahead with its atomic program despite U.N. sanctions...

The Russians are right there with them huh... never really lost their sleazy ways. What are the names of some of the countries the Soviet Union invaded back in the day ? Maybe we should "nuclearize" one or two of them ?

The U.S. should drop a nuke on that facility, all these weak sanctions have obviously failed.

They are the only country with the gonads to do it. Sadly tho Jon, while the west hopes they do it they will probably join the rest of the world at the UN and condemn Israel if it happens.

If they're only using it to create electricity, then fine. If it's being used for weapons to attack others and not for defense of their own country from attack, then I have an issue.

Well being as they sit on about a kajillion gallons of crude I really don't see that there's a great need for it to produce energy so....

Re: Iran Loads Up Its First Nuclear Reactor

Historically electricity production has been the stepping stone towards weapons production. Here's a pretty good piece of commentary on the issue.

Despite this problem, people loves them some nuclear! If everyone would condemn all nuclear tech, we might get somewhere. Unfortunately, the current users will not give it up, which means it's only a matter of time before someone pushes us into nuclear Armageddon... probably Israel, as you have all suggested.

All of you will get to cheerlead.. and then watch your hair and nails fall out slowly over the ensuing months, assuming you survive the initial blasts.

This is true, but apparently they don't have the refinery capacity to meet demands.

Iran has some of the world's biggest oil reserves, but lacks refinery capacity to meet domestic demand and must repurchase fuel on international markets. Nuclear power is seen as both a goal to meet power needs and an important technological achievement for the Islamic government.

Too bad we can't just go in and assassinate Ahmadinejad and the Mullahs that keep him in power. Overall Iran probably has one of the most moderate populations in the region.

Thank you. That is a very smart post, and points to the United States' biggest international mistake since the Bay of Pigs...

NOT supporting the Iranian student uprising. All it would have taken was a few Spec. Ops. to simply run "communication and protection" ops. Keep the leaders safe and in communication with each other.

As far as the nuclear issue is concerned, I have no problem with nuclear power. The United States Navy has pretty much perfected Nuclear power. The problem I have, is when nations such as Iran, who has openly supported terrorism in the past, flaunts their new nuclear technology in the face of the world.

To that end, I have no problem with Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, or Turkey having nuclear power. While we have disagreements with all these nations, they have all become decent if not good members of the international community. For that reason, in another 10 years, I would be open to seeing Libya with nuclear power as well-since they have opened their borders to the U.N., and gave up whatever WMD programs they had-also taken responsibility for terrorist acts (and delivering a letter to the UN security council to that effect). Of course, the latter is provided that Libya continues down its present track, and resists any more efforts at assassination of foreign dignitaries (except in times of war where a proper declaration is made in defense of their country).

Something like 40% of Iranians are under 30 years old, and I think the 2009 election protests show that the country is undergoing a change in ideology. We can't keep every country we don't like in the pre-nuclear era forever with diplomacy, and bombing them just seems kind of ironic.

Re: Iran Loads Up Its First Nuclear Reactor

Remember. Nuclear weapon technology was created as a "deterrent" to war... a peace maker. If the human race will not learn to live with each other, mutual assured destruction is a fact. Which means nobody wins anymore, so why fight at all. But, so far so good.
If these nuclear countries cannot get along and begin using their nuclear arsenals... enter a world government to regulate them (big government is popular these days already).
But in retrospect, there have been many more killings in war as a result of conventional means than nuclear... therefore, if they need to stop someone from killing, they need to stop guns, tanks and chemical bombs... A means to kill is a means to kill... But it all boils down to the nut behind the gun, tank, etc... "wanting" to use it.

Have you seen their new bomber?

    Ahmadinejad unveils new 'bomber' drone

TEHRAN (AFP) – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad unveiled on Sunday a new long-range drone, dubbed Karar, which reportedly can bomb targets at high speed, state television reported.

Television footage showed the president applauding as a blue cloth which had been covering the drone was pulled back to reveal a short aircraft painted in military-green with the words "Bomber jet" written on its side.

Images were then broadcast on television showing the aircraft flying.

"This jet, before it heralds death for enemies, is the messenger of salvation and dignity for humanity," Ahmadinejad said in his speech marking the unveiling of the drone in a hall at Tehran's Malek Ashtar university.

Still think they just want to make electricity?

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Sunday inaugurated the country's first domestically built unmanned bomber aircraft, calling it an "ambassador of death" to Iran's enemies.

The 4-meter-long drone aircraft can carry up to four cruise missiles and will have a range of 620 miles (1,000 kilometers), according to a state TV report - not far enough to reach archenemy Israel.

"The jet, as well as being an ambassador of death for the enemies of humanity, has a main message of peace and friendship," said Ahmadinejad at the inauguration ceremony, which fell on the country's national day for its defense industries.

The goal of the aircraft, named Karrar or striker, is to "keep the enemy paralyzed in its bases," he said, adding that the aircraft is for deterrence and defensive purposes.

"Peace and friendship" from a cruise missile. When you care enough to send only the very best? "Thinking of you"? "Reach out and touch someone"?

Gotta remember however, normally, Nukes are weighing half a metric ton or more. While there are much smaller nukes (see the "Davy Crockett Gun, coming in at about 51 pounds and could deliver anywhere from 10 to 20 tons of TNT by comparison), they would definitely have to be tested before they could be trusted. Furthermore, the furor that ANY nuclear strike would cause, would make something small enough to be carried on a drone worthless (the Davy Crockett Gun had a 500 foot instant kill radius from REMS and lethal rems for about a quarter mile on a battlefield).

When the entire world recognizes the legality of responding to WMD attacks with WMD, any nuclear strike against Israel or the US (in reality, the ONLY to enemies Iran would be speaking about) would and should be met with an instant retaliation-from a much more deadly accurate and much deadlier weight/yield ratio weapon.

For all those reasons, I don't think they would deploy a nuclear weapon on that kind of platform-unless it was accompanied by all out war.
