The tree is irrelevant. Tomlin hires older coaches to start with
, so inevitably, people will say they don’t count towards his tree…
Then the argument is moot as Tomlin only hires veteran coaches. When has he ever hired a guy that wasn’t established? He hires guys with plenty of experience. So naturally, he’s not going to have a “tree”.
If he did hire younger coaches, then people would complain that he’s hiring people with no experience.
If he hired Klint Kubiak as an OC, would that eventually count or does Shanghai get credit for that? Where’s the line?

I don’t know if it will work on here.
But it is by far my favorite image for this.
It’s all one tree.
The Sid Gillman tree is also good. Noll is in both trees

How many times has 'coaching tree' come up in just this thread alone?
Who hires the most coaches?
Owners of bad teams. Often frustrated and desperate owners who want an immediate turnaround not a multiple year plan to build a structure for sustained long term success.
So they hire guys from whatever is hot across the league. Right now that's guys somehow related to Fangio or Shanahan.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs just keep winning and no one is hiring those guys anymore because Nagy flamed out and doing what the Chiefs are doing requires a stable organization and a detailed plan.
Quick fixes are what bad owners want.

How bout that Belichick tree?! Better to have no tree than one that bad.
We used to have apple trees in our yard in the 70s. Good times

There is unrest in the forest, there is trouble with the trees.
Stats are often for losers, Tomlin unconcerned with "comfort food" numbers
https://steelersdepot.com/2024/10/st...-food-numbers/
Tomlin lies ....
if he truly felt like that he wouldn't be making a change at QB sitting at 4-2
Tomlin career winning percentage in the regular season is .633 ........... Tomlins winning percentage with Fields at QB .667
Tomlin is seeking comfort food in Wilsons past numbers and expecting future results ... behind this Patchwork poorly coached , mash unit of an O-line ..... I expect bad things
Kenny Pickett is who I though he was .. Eagles didn't value him either , now he is a Stain at the Mistake by the Lake 3 teams in 4 years more of a shooting star than a superstar
Tomlin Has a Brand new pair of Jordans he wore 6 times but he is going to put them back in the closet for his canvas Converse Chuck Taylor Hi Tops that the sole is disconnecting from the canvas because he seeks comfort in the past

I've been a Tomlin defender, no doubt. However, that doesn't mean that the criticism of his recent playoff win drought isn't justified. As well as, quite frankly, his perceived ultra conservative oversite of the offense. What I don't get about the criticism of him deciding to play Russ is that it flies in the face of the notion that he is happy to just be above .500, make the playoffs and repeat every year. I have never believed that, but many seem too. If he simply wanted to be above.500, and make the playoffs, he could do that by leaving in Justin. Putting in Russ is more in line with taking a risk to try and be better than that.
Now personally, I would have left Justin in for one more week. I'd like to see him against the Jet's D. Plus, if you wait to start Russ until the Gnats game then you have a week off to reassess after his debut. That's probably being nitpicky on my part.
In the end if Russ plays, I will support him. Likewise, with Justin.

The issue I have with that is that argument is that it is in conflict with another argument often given in evaluating Tomlin's career which is that he only won a Superbowl because he had Cowher's players. I'm not saying you made that argument, but I hear it all the time.
How is it in conflict? Tomlin won a Super Bowl with Cowher's players because Cowher left him great players and pretty good assistant coaches. It wasn't because of any great coaching by Tomlin. Once Cowher's players and assistant coaches were gone and Tomlin had to develop or acquire his own he didn't have the ability to do it, especially in the playoffs.
It's a conflict because the criticism of Tomlin in general is not limited to his ability to draft or develop players. You get "he doesn't know how to coach." Or, "there is no discipline because Tomlin just wants to be the player's best friend." If that were true, and coaching counts, he shouldn't have won a Superbowl no matter how good the players were. Either coaching counts or it doesn't. The other reason the "Cowher's player's argument" doesn't hold water is that Cowher wasn't coming off a Superbowl in his last season with his players.
As far as Tomlin's ability to draft and develop players, I'll admit I think Noll and Cowher were better at that particular aspect of coaching. I think sometimes Tomlin's ego gets in his way. He sees weakness in his team and convinces himself that his coaching, and his faith in "the men" will overcome a lack of skill. One of my favorite quotes from "Eldorado" is when Nelse Mcloud tells Milt that; "faith can move mountain's but it can't beat a faster gun." Tomlin's faith in "his men" is why he will never lose his team, and players will always want to play for him, but it doesn't always make up for a lack in talent.
That said. It's not like he hasn't developed great players. How many Hall of Famers did Cowher draft and develop? My guess is Tomlin will be right there with him on that number. No one can deny the Steelers haven't been good enough recently in the playoffs. And if Tomlin is not able to rectify that before he leaves it will be a mark on his record. Nevertheless, he will make the Hall of Fame someday and deserve it.
Frustration with recent events aside, the Steelers have had three hall of fame Coaches for the last 50+ years. There are a lot of fans of other teams (in any league) that can't even fathom that.

Too bad the Steelers didn’t hire Russ Grimm. That’s got to be one of the biggest missed opportunities of all time.
Imagine how many playoff wins the Steelers would have if they could do that over.
