Texans fan traveling to Pittsburgh for MNF, any feedback?

    Hello Steelers universe,

I will be traveling from houston to see the Texans play the steelers oct 20, MNF. Not here to talk trash or anything, i would just like some advice on how you all do game day at heinz field.

My biggest question is what the fans are like at heinz field. I along with my group will be wearing out battle red jersey. And houston is expecting to take a good crowd in general. What can we expect?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    cheers.

All I can say is that since you are not wearing a Browns, Bengals, Ravens, Patriots* or Raiders jersey, I don't think you will have any problems. I'm not really an authority on it as I've only been to 2 Steelers games in my life even though I've lived here all my life.

I've only been to a couple myself but as long as you're respectful and not shooting your mouth off you shouldn't have any problems. Heinz field isn't hostile like philly, detroit, oakland, ect.

You are always going to have your share of drunken idiots, just try to ignore them. For the most part they are pretty respectful to outsiders.

If the Texans are winning, don't gloat. If they end up winning, keep your mouth shut. Steeler fans are friendly as long as the Steelers win. What section are you sitting in?

Do you mind swinging through Abilene and picking me up and taking me to the game? I got gas money! Haha!

Hey rolando ! Welcome aboard. I will be at the game also. I usually try to make 1 game a year and luckily I'm off on the following Tuesday so I figured the Monday night game would be a good one to hit ( never been to a Monday night game). I figure on leaving Dillsboro, Indiana on Sunday morning and coming back Tuesday afternoon. To answer your question though, I don't think you'll have any trouble. As was said earlier, you have your share of drunks but I've never seen any really obnoxious stuff ( that's usually just the bunghole fans). But being a Steeler fan I it may be the homer coming out of me. Enjoy yourself ! Oh, and I hope your team loses ! LOL.

i appreciate the responses. I will be sitting in section 518 behind the endzone.

Ive been to foxboro and that wasnt a very fun experience lol. Drunk fools like every stadium but they really got under the skin. Last year was at San diego but they were nice.

I would appreciate any advice in terms of parking/tailgating. Any must do site seeing?

Bleacher seats in Section 518, not as comfortable as the yellow seats. Fans in the bleachers are a little more rowdy than the doctor and lawyer seats closer to the field. As far as parking goes, unless you have a pass for one of the lots adjacent to the stadium, parking can be difficult. A couple of alternatives . . . park in the Rivers Casino parking garage or park at Station Square and ride the Gateway Clipper to the stadium. You can also take the T (light rail) to Heinz Field from Station Square. You can park downtown and walk to the stadium or take the T. Can be a fairly long walk, depending on what downtown garage you choose. Parking downtown is much more difficult for a Monday night game than on Sunday. I can walk to the T from where I live.

    Good info here: http://prod.static.steelers.clubs.nf...rkingGuide.pdf

You'll find people tailgating in all the lots, and since all the spaces are pre-sold, the same people tend to be there week in and week out. Also remember if you are planning on bringing beer and /or other adult beverages, there are no beer or liquor sales in Pennsylvania on Sunday. Of course, beer is available inside Heinz Field, and since the game is on Monday, you'll have a chance to get some before the game. Beer isn't sold in grocery stores; you have to go to a licensed beer distributor, and wine / spirits are sold only in state operated stores. Much different than Texas (and almost every other state.)

I would also recommend a visit to the Heinz History Center for site seeing. http://www.heinzhistorycenter.org/historyCenter.aspx The sports museum is Pittsburgh - centric of course, but it well worth the trip.

    Interesting.

I do have questions about the alcohol.

The beer stores only sell big cases, like 24 packs? What if i want a six pack of beer?

I cant buy any type of alcohol on sundays? If you want to drink you go to a bar or restaurant?

Also, what if i want to tailgate myself? Get a grill and what not.

I'm not a drinker, but I do know there are only a few state stores open on Sunday, and I believe those are the ones embedded inside large grocery stores -- but it is a store within a store and you have to make all alcohol purchases at the state store cash registers; you can't take alcohol to the store registers. Also, I think they are only open 12 -5 on Sundays at those locations. My wife reminded me that some grocery stores do have beer, but I'm not sure why they do. The Giant Eagle near us has a small section that has beer and you can buy six packs there, but it is also in a separate section that serves prepared food as well, and you have to buy the beer there. Most stores do not sell beer, no convenience stores like you are used to seeing in other states. The beer distributors only sell by the case or keg. I think bars can sell you one cold six pack at a time.
If you are parking in one of the stadium lots, you can bring a grill and tailgate, but you have to contain your activities to your parking space. People set up cornhole games and other things, and throw footballs around, but only after all the spaces are filled. As I said, most of the people in the pre-paid lots are there for every game, and friends park next to each other to spread out the tailgate experience. Monday night games are different; fewer families with kids. I'm not sure what the police presence will be like. This will be the first night game since the country music concert that had so much trouble in the parking lots beforehand.

You can buy entire cases of beer at the Giant Eagle near my place, and you can get them cold too.

Bring your umbrella or at least a cheap poncho in your pack. If the Steelers are losing, the sky will be falling.

Also, it rains in Pittsburgh. A lot. Not every day like in Seattle, but Pittsburgh actually gets more volume - when it rains, it really, really, really rains.

If you want wine or booze you have to get that at a state store [or restaurant].. Used to be that they were all closed on Sunday, now they're allowed to be open on Sunday until 5PM but most of them are still closed Sundays anyway.

Beer is a little different, plenty of drive-thru beer stores around (yeah you read that right). Used to be that while beer wasn't as tight as booze, you still had to go to a beer distributor that was not a grocery store. They've started relaxing that stuff - you can pick up your beer at Giant Eagle and the like now. Well, they haven't relaxed it too much... you can get beer at Giant Eagle because of a technicality, they have to technically be a restaurant that sells beverages to be allowed to do it or something like that.

Pennsylvania is weird. Being as your game is MNF, you shouldn't run into any "Sunday" issues anyways.

Pam's diner isn't a bad place for breakfast either.
