Brett Favre confirms 2015 Packers HOF, jersey retirement

On Sunday evening, the Packers released a statement about a Monday announcement concerning the team’s Hall of Fame and Brett Favre.

It didn’t take Thomas Magnum to put two and two together and guess that the Packers would be announcing the date that Favre would be enshrined alongside other Packer greats. One could also speculate that there might be some word about when the team would retire Favre’s No. 4, especially since CEO Mark Murphy had spoken about conversations with Favre about the topic.

The announcement is set for Monday afternoon, but Favre spilled the beans on his website Sunday night. He’ll be entering the Hall and having his jersey retired in 2015.

Probably the only player I've ever heard of where there's drama and manufactured suspense over a jersey retirement. The media just has to keep going gaga over him until the very end. I swear, he's the frigg'n Kim Kardashian of pro football.

Would you rather have Favre back to start for one more season or Obama win another election?

I never post politics in this forum but I'd rather see Favre. I never had a problem with him playing.

Couldn't agree more. The guy hasn't played in four seasons, yet his stupid jersey retirement by the Packers basically upstaged the latest HoF inductions.

I imagine another "big announcement" regarding Favre will come right around or during Super Bowl week which will wind up dwarfing the coverage of the actual game.

I just want the guy to go the fuck away already.

And here I sit in the middle of all of the insanity - - - constant 'teasers' for the 'second coming of Favre' on all of the stations here... I haven't bought a Green Bay newspaper since SB XLV - - kept getting green ink on my fingertips, but since they have a Packers section along with a sports section in Sunday's newspapers, I guess I won't be buying another one soon - - unless one of my grandkids make the news..... There is a huge influx of #4 jerseys, etc. all over the place already.....

I loved him as a player, and he should have had the grace to hang it up, but for it to take this long for the fans to accept this should have told him something... He seems to have humbled a bit.... But I don't know if I will survive the constant hype that is already happening..... Sheesh....

Re: Brett Favre confirms 2015 Packers HOF, jersey retirement

Favre was a great player, no doubt. And the announcement timing wasn't up to Favre, that was a decision made by the Packers Hall of Fame. They should have waited a week so all the focus last weekend could have been on the Pro Football Hall of Fame inductions.

The fact that none of this is happening until NEXT YEAR, I don't see why they had to announce it last weekend. They could have announced this on any weekend between now and the start of the season.

As for Favre's actions, like I said he was a great player. I think he wanted to retire a Packer, I don't think he wanted to leave the team. Remember, they traded him to the Jets in 2008. Fans are pissed that he ended up a Viking in the end, but they seem to finally be over that. While he chose to become a member of the Vikings, it's not like the Packers wanted him back, not with Aaron Rogers playing QB.

Was Favre selfish with the way he handled retirement so often at the end of his career? Yeah. Honestly, I don't think he wanted to go through the training camp grind. I think trading him was a combo of Packers brass being tired of Favre holding retirement over their heads, and their wanting to play Rogers (honestly, I think if Favre would have played in GB through Roger's rookie deal, Rogers would have left.) The Packers didn't want to waste that first round pick, and they knew what they had in him over the years of watching him in practice. They knew he was the future and Favre was a whole lot closer to the past.

He was pissed he was traded. But he wanted to keep playing until he had some personal records (consecutive games started, career yardage, career attempts, career touchdowns, career completions). Is that selfish? Yes. Can I blame him? No.

Some fans will never forgive him for playing for the Vikings. Is that right? Not really, with everything he did as a Packer. But also, I can't blame them either. If Ben Roethlisberger became a free agent and decided to play for a division rival I am sure there are plenty of fans that would never forgive him for it.

I think he will get just about all cheers, whatever boos there are, will be drowned out.
