Re: Legendary Steelers coach Chuck Noll dies at 82

Statements on the passing of Hall of Fame Coach Chuck Noll.

    Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney:

As for the football end of it, I think he ranks with Halas and Lombardi. There are many other good coaches over the history of the NFL, but I think Chuck Noll ranks up there with those other two guys right at the top. No other coach won four Super Bowls, and the way he did it was with dignity..........

RIP coach Noll. Very underrated. A lot of people diminish Noll because he "only won with great talent". Which to some extent was true. But what they leave out is Noll virtually never lost when he had the better team. Something in recent years I've come to appreciate, because quite frankly I've seen recent editions of Steeler teams lose to inferior teams with disturbing regularity.

Hey guys...haven't been on in a while but had to log on today.

I feel a real sense of loss. I know I never met Coach Knoll, but I am a Steeler fan today because of the teams he put together.

As far as the greatest coaches in the history of the NFL, there is no doubt Noll should be in the same conversation as the likes of Lombardi and Walsh.

RIP, Coach Noll. Steeler Nation owes you a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid in a million lifetimes.

Traffic shouldn't be TOO big of an issue since it's summer and nearly all of the students are gone. It would be much worse if classes were still in session.

1979 - Last team to win a Super Bowl with 100% home-grown talent. Not like he didn't have anything to do with developing that talent...

This is now impossible to win a super bowl with 100% home-grown talent, even if Green Bay was close in 2010....

The league also wasn't watered down like it is now by expansion, the salary cap and free agency. Those Raiders teams were great. Those Cowboys teams were great. The Vikings were great in those days too.

Yet Belichick gets roundly praised as a genius for beating an overconfident (and overrated) Rams team, a Jake Delhomme-led Panthers team that hasn't sniffed a Super Bowl since and an Eagles team led by the ever-choking McNabb by 3 points a piece under highly dubious circumstances (Spygate, cough, cough).

And for all the praise Walsh gets, the 1981 and 1988 Bengals really weren't anything special and the '84 Dolphins and '89 Broncos were essentially one-man teams. And after the Raiders cleaned the Redskins' clocks in SB XVIII, the AFC spent the next 15 years afterward playing weak sister to the NFC in general.

IMO, Noll came out on top more regularly at a time when it really was the most difficult to do so and competition was at its most fierce. And Noll never got the credit he deserved back then, either. But then, he never courted praise for himself either.

football died a little when Chaz closed his eyes for the last time , without question the greatest coach in the modern era even if the pundits do not agree ...

    4 Lombardi's says it all ...

Pundits sole argument against naming Noll as the greatest is the players he had .....

Problem with that argument is he had a large say in obtaining those players , developing them and scheming to fit those players talents , so those players should never be a negative in evaluating Noll they should however be a positive ....

4 SB in 6 years will never be equaled it is a record that will stand the test of time while so many fall by the way side in short order .....

Noll was Pittsburgh , Noll was the Steelers he built the foundation for everything we know and love today about Steeler football ......

an Icon , a Legend , an embodiment of the franchise and the City ....

    May God Bless his soul

Zulater has an excellent point about the fact that Noll never lost as favorite.....It's not easy to do!

Belichick has lost a few times as favorite as twice against the Giants in Super Bowl and against the jets of Mark Sanchez in 2010....Bill Walsh was an unbelievable coach, but his team was heavily favored in 1987 against the 8-7 Vikings, but the 49ers have easily lost this game

Noll has never lost as favorite in the playoffs

Noll is head and shoulders above the current knob slobbed Belicheat.

Not only in football, but in life in general. Landry is better than Dirty Bill. Madden is better than Dirty Bill. Grant is better than Dirty Bill.

In fact, the quality of coaches in today's NFL can't even come close to the coaches of the 70s.
