Because of greed, and Cuban would know better. Ticket prices are way too high not to mention all the other additional charges to park and buy a hotdog.

He's talking about TV contracts, which I don't think will be the cause of the league's downfall ... more like the fact that they're watering down the game, and have gone to such extremes monetizing everything and packaging it as a Sports Experience that people will get sick of it. Are already getting sick of it, actually.

I mean, he's right about the fundamental point of greed poisoning the league, I just see it showing up in different places.

The study was by no means perfect, of course, but a different outcome probably would have pushed me to support Cuban's theory. Speaking to reporters in Dallas, Cuban suggested that the NFL was on its way to oversaturating the market. "They're trying to take over every night of TV," he said. "It's all football. At some point, the people get sick of it."
Yep, I don't even watch the Thursday games because I cancelled NFL Network. (I stream the Steelers online when they play) Everytime, I turned it on, it was different people talking about the same thing. While I enjoy watching all the past glory of the Steelers, I have the previous Super Bowls on DVD. Plus, Deion, Sapp and Irvin make want want to kick my TV and kick their faces. But I agree w/Cuban. People are going to get sick of a watered down product. I don't like the expensive productions of all the pregame, halftime, postgame entertainment (singers); all the opening game hype etc.

Great points. Goodell is going to experience a "beanie baby" phenomenon...if he keeps trying to wring every dollar out of the fans.

    Several points here.

I don't care about the NFL or anything it touches, except the Pittsburgh Steelers. IMM, the league exists so the Steelers have teams to play.

NFL Network is a waste of spectrum.

The league will implode under its self importance.

Re: NFL on verge of implosion ?

This is quite ironic coming from a dude whose league I have COMPLETELY tuned out on over the last 7-10 years for a variety of reasons (game 6 of the 2002 Western Conference Finals, the latest "faces" of the league, namely LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, being complete punkasses whom I cannot stand, the "thug life" culture the NBA has embraced, among others).

And I was almost as big a fan of the NBA as I was the NFL at one point back in the '80s during the heyday of the Bird/Magic rivalry and was also a huge Dr. J fan, so that's saying something.

Then again, Cuban isn't totally incorrect as the only reason I haven't tuned out on the NFL in the same manner as I have with the NBA is because of my love for the Steelers. I also know I'm not alone in that sentiment.

The NFL is like sex, even when it's bad it's good. The league is fine. Even the idiot Goodell can't ruin it, try as he might.

    The NFL implode?

I hope. I'm in the same boat as Gary - the only reason I care about the NFL at all is because of the Steelers. Otherwise, I'd have checked out a long time ago. The NHL and NBA are headed down the same path.

Seems MLB, for all of it's warts, is still the one sport where you don't have to take out a loan to take your family to a game. A family of 4 can see a game at PNC for less than $70.

If you are sick of the NBA crybaby's check out the Spurs. If there is an organization that I can say reminds me of the Steelers; it's the Spurs. A well run front office with a great head coach that knows how to win with classy players. Not trying to turn this into a basketball discussion just saw this and had to comment.

As for the NFL, when NFL owners have to get corporations to buy PLAYOFF tickets in order to sell out a MAJOR game you have issues. Of course then you have the loonies running the asylum when "Go to Hell" listens to Jerry and wants to expand the playoffs well go figure.

I was a big NBA fan in the 80s and 90s. I loved those Phoenix Suns with Barkley, Majerle, Manning, and KJ. But the league got less and less interesting to me. I quit following any team once the Suns decided to adorn their jerseys with "Los Suns".

Cuban is right. Yes, he's party of a league that is in a pretty sorry state, but it's not his doing. How many times has he been fined or disciplined for speaking out against the NBA? He's a thorn in their sides even though he's what they need. He's a savvy businessman and a great predictor of trends and if I'm the NFL I listen to his words very seriously.

It's already the case that for the cost of taking my family to one game, I could buy season ticket and a nice huge TV to watch it on. Still love the Steelers but NFL football is becoming less and less compelling. If they had a serious competitor emerge in these times they might find themselves in some actual trouble.

The MLB had to implode itself in the 90's and 2000's before it got to it's current state.

Perhaps an implosion is what the NFL needs.

If it led to a change in commissioner and overall management style, it would be worth it...

Ratings go up because Goodell is tapping into the very large "knucklehead fanbase"...Those who know next to nothing about football. The real fans are backing away from the game...look at the actual game attendance.

The knuckleheads dont invest in the game beyond fantasy football and bringing bean dip to the superbowl party.

Godell is just killing the game rule by rule, idea by idea. Today...take away the goal post dunk celebration...why? What's that really hurt?

It gave an unfair marketing advantage to those players under 6' ft tall?

Re: NFL on verge of implosion ?

The game will change over the next decade. It already has. But to think that it will implode is ridiculous. Cuban's argument assumes that things stay the same. They won't. The NFL is and has always been the most TV/Media friendly of the major pro sports. Once the current TV deals run out, I figure the NFL looks into rolling out some option where instead of buying a "package" or an entire channel; you can can simply purchase what NFL content you want a la carte and watch it at your leisure. So you can purchase a license to watch specific games over some sort of digital stream, the draft, a weekly highlights show, and I'm sure they'll think of something else.

They will have to do something about the increasing financial and logistical disincentive to actually attend games. But all sports are struggling with that.

In 10 years the NFL may be a vastly different game and media experience, but to think it won't be there -- kinda silly. Mark Cuban should know better.
