    Steelers Sign Cornerback Brice McCain

    Steelers | Sign Brice McCain
    Tue, 01 Apr 2014

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed CB Brice McCain (Texans) Tuesday, April 1. Terms of the contract were not disclosed -

Short scrappy CB with elite straightline speed. (4.33) Probably destined for the nickle slot and special teams.

The team is reportedly now looking in all the facilities couch cushions for change, and are planning a bake sale for the upcoming weekend....

we have a lot of middling depth at cornerback now (william gay, ike taylor, brice mccain), with one potential good one in cortez allen. that doesnt sound like a half bad way to enter the draft.

lol $32,000 under the salary cap after this signing:http://www.steelersdepot.com/2014/04...ccain-signing/

Thought we had no cap room after the Blount signing. As long as he provides depth

McCain, this signing I care for even less than the Cam Thomas. I guess it's depth...

Heyward-Bey I wouldn't mind... at this point he's nothing more than a camp body, get in camp and prove he's not going to struggle with drops... if it works out and he makes the team, cool. If not... not much harm.

I wonder if the thinking behind this is that they don't want to double up on WR in the draft unless an extremely good value presents itself on day 3.

Well not a terrible signing, except it seems like this guy pretty much sucks. When the first sentence of the first report I read talks about getting "roasted" by Eddie Royal, it does not inspire confidence. However, they do need to go to camp with more than 3 corners.

I can almost guarentee he wasnt "roasted" as much as "Wrong Way-Gay". And he has the speed to recover.

He is going to be a back-up anyway. Drafting a future starter will happen in the draft

I would also be interested to know what was the play count when he was " burned " meaning time from snap to QB release of the passes he was burned on , did they fail to get a rush on those downs that got him in the doghouse for giving up big plays ? Exactly...those who are trying to gauge his value as a starter dont see him for what he is. A solid backup, wave player that is an upgrade over Gay.

Don't quite get the continued bashing of Gay. An argument could be made that he was the most solid CB last year. May not be saying much, but I for one am glad he was brought back.

Totally disagree. If Gay was our best corner he wouldnt be behind two CB's that actually struggled themselves.

I get that it's a depth signing but considering it's practically a given that we're going to draft one if not two CBs and snag some UDFA too... did we really need this depth?

Well for someone who was brought back for depth and packages, he was third on the team in solo tackles, had two FF, a sack, and an int for a TD. Didn't see him get burned as much as Ike. At one point he and Allen were splitting starting duties. I'm not saying he's a pro bowler, but he is not a weak link.....In my opinion.

Its the diference between veteran depth and rookie depth. So yes.

Our "best cornerback" lost his job to ...a first year starter that was not as good as him?
We resigned an older cornerback to come back to be a starter...instead of putting our "best cornerback" in his place?
We just signed a CB who is obviously a nickle corner...because of our faith in our "best cornerback"?

People get caught up in the stats without putting them into perspective. William Gay forces us to cheat our safeties up to compensate instead of allowing them to play the outfield. There is a very good reason that as a unit, our defensive back play was so poor this last year. There is a very good reason that Gay isnt the #1 or #2 corner.
Stats never tell the whole story and beyond a shadow of a doubt, the front office will upgrade the DB backfield wiht players that open up our defense...not confine it in order to cover deficiencies.

Sure, you can say that Gay had solid stats this last year...but anyone who thinks he is our best Corner...MUST think that Dwyer is a better running back than Bell, because Dwyer had 4.0 yards per carry, and Bell had 3.5. Hey Stats dont lie, right?

You may need to check on that. I am pretty sure Gay was brought back for depth and nickel, not as a starter! Allen and Taylor were slated as starters.

Stats are the best way to lie. Numbers are nearly meaningless without many layers of context.

Taylor is the older CB that I was referring to.

But thanks for making my point.

Gay is Serviceable. I don't hate the man but if you get a chance to upgrade, you do it. The bashing he takes is maybe a little unnecessary, but that's because nobody should expect him to be a starter.

I don't know enough about McCain. If he's better than Gay then fine. If he's not... I don't get the signing. Wait-and-see for me.

Maybe McCain is probably needed for special teams, replacing Curtis Brown as the "shit, we got nobody else left" DB.

These player notes certainly make McCain sound more like a replacement for Brown than for Gay or anyone else.
