When I was living in Hawaii, we had a huge rainstorm that was localized over a section of the mountain range that divided the lee side of the island of Oahu from the windward side... There were areas of severe flooding and because of a stuck gate in a stream that emptied a marsh, a sudden flood rose up in a very flat area filled with ranch style homes... This happened after midnight on New Years Eve.... A few folks were going through the neighborhood banging on doors to warn people what was happening... And it was sometime easier to go through back yards because most bedrooms were located in the back part of the houses... A few 'rescuers' reported that they would be wading through chest deep water in the yards in the dark of night, and the biggest hazard was encountering a swimming pool and being well over their heads...
