Steelers vs Bengals - Week 16 Thoughts

Shorter than usual but honestly, what else is there to say?

    "Hi Alex,
    Thank you as always!
    Hugs,
    Marianne"

    First Half

    - Cotchery started game in 2 WR set, sets edge on Dwyer's run that goes for 13 yards on first play of the game.

    - Dwyer's stats aside from that 13 yard run? 13 carries for 26 yards. He also had an 11 yarder in the first. So take that away too and you're left with 12 carries for 15 yards.

    - Curtis Brown got the nod over Victorian this week.

    - Victorian a starting jammer.

    - Dwyer dancing too much. Play likely designed to be run off tackle, like the first play that went for 13 yards, but the lanes are filled. He looks like he decides to try to cut across the field but at the last second, attempts the playside "A" gap instead. Ends up barely keeping his balance and running into Pouncey for a gain of just three. Needed to pick a hole and hit it. Run with conviction big fella! Picture.

    - A hold made it a moot point but here's Rainey running down Pacman Jones on a punt return. Comes from probably 30 yards away. Granted he has an angle and Pacman weaves a little bit, but still impressive. Pictures are kinda screwed up, but Rainey is boxed so you can see where he's at.

    - Credit to Leon Hall for squatting and not opening the gate (turning hips) before Heath broke inside on Hall's pick six. We ran that last week vs Dallas and McCray got caught turning, allowing Heath to make the catch and pick up 17. Comparison.

    - Beachum walked into the backfield by Atkins on 4th and inches. Great effort by Redman to stretch and claw his way for the first.

    - Looks like 3rd and goal before missed FG bu Suisham was supposed to be a rub on a slant/flat that didn't work. Pic.

    - Lewis came into the game banged up with a hip and knee, but really started limping after Marvin Jones catch mid-way through the second. Gutsy performance.

    - Heyward, McClendon saw an uptick in playing time.

    - Story of Hamp finally being healthy seems to jive with his play. Excellent second half of the year and he was flat out dominant in this game.

    Second Half

    - Cortez's first INT. Cover 3, Dalton sees Troy attack flats, looks like seam is open. But Hampton pressure doesn't let Dalton step into throw and Allen is able to undercut the route. Shows how the seam appeared to be open for Dalton and why he made the throw. Bottom of your screen.

    - Timmons got four yard sack on Dalton in 3rd quarter on LB cross blitz LeBeau has made famous. RG doubles the end thinking there's no one else to pick up, leaving Timmons one-on-one with the back.

    - Cortez kicked to the nickel when Brown/Victorian came in for subpackages.

    - DeCastro definitely struggled. Atkins schooled him and even when he was out, Pat Sims bested him.

    - OL as a whole struggled with stunts all game. Been an issue off and on all year.

    - Troy may have had hook/flat responsibility but guessed on curl, leaving AJ Green open for a 21 yard gain.

    - Blitzed/stunted Harrison a lot of "A" gap. How he got his sack late in the 4th.

    - Ben INT late in the game. I know he's on the move but he definitely had time to set his feet better than he did. This throw was pretty much all arm, no legs or hips into it. Reason why it was off the mark.

    - Next play, Green's 21 yard catch to put them in FG range. Lewis turned hips afraid of the seam, created separation for Green when he cut on the flag. Spacing concept, trips bunch, crossing route, flat route (holds LB on hook/flat responsibility) and the corner.

    Sacks

    - 3rd and 7, 13:02 left in 1st. 22. 6 vs 4. Atkins dips under DeCastro, drops Ben.

    - 3rd and 7, 13:27 left in 3rd. Shotgun, 11. Foster gets reversed pancaked by Atkins.

    - 2nd and 12, 4:37. 21. 6 vs 4. Pouncey tries to knock off DT working on Foster but whiffs. Looping DE Michael Johnson comes in free. Good coverage by Cincy downfield to, dropping seven.

    - 3rd and 7, 13:59 left in 4th. 20. Shotgun. 7 (two in backfield on block/release) vs 4. DeCastro beat by Atkins.
