Steelers vs Giants - Week Nine Thoughts

    "Hi Alex!
    Again, many thanks!
    Marianne"

    First Half

    - Run divide route, TE on the corner, Nicks on post first play of the game. Nice job by Lewis to recover, break pass up.

    - Cruz 26 yard catch. Looks like Woodley tried to reroute him but couldn't get good jam and slipped. Cruz wide open across the middle.

    - Ike INT. Zone, safety help over the top (2 deep shell). Allows Ike to trail the WR and Ike ends up being underneath when the receiver breaks off his corner route. Pic.

    - Deep shot to Brown late in first quarter. Single-high safety, Ben tries to look off safety while Brown sells outside and then come back with an inside stem. But safety is not fooled and closes up the window. Pass falls incomplete.

    - Another example of Ben's mobility in the pocket. Last play of first quarter. Colon allows pressure to the inside, Ben slides to his left, fires to Paulson for a first down. Pics.

    - TD to Sanders. Ben again slides to his right to an open throwing lane, extends the play (was just three step and Adams cut block so ball was supposed to come out much quicker than it did but Giants have good initial coverage) and Ben leads Sanders in the back of the end zone.

    - Really good blocks by Brandon and Will Johnson along with Mundy on Rainey's 50 yard return.

    - Pistol again, draw to Redman for 11.

    - Sanders did a really nice job run blocking in the first half. Arguably our best run blocking WR.

    - Lewis' 2nd PI (the obvious one). Hixon stemmed to the post but broke it off to run a fly. Lewis opened his hips to the past and got beat when Hixon stemmed back outside.

    - Funny moment on Tynes' 51 yard miss. Holder Weatherford embraced and started celebrating with Tynes thinking the kick was good. Then the refs ruled it was short. Awkward...

    - Miller 23 yard gain right before end of the half. Called "Y shake". Heath chops his feet ro sell the out, LB bites and starts to drive on it and Miller runs the post. Wide open.

    Second Half

    - 33 yard catch by Bennett. Blown coverage? Don't know who was supposed to have deep right 1/3 but it was open. Was it Lewis the CB? Foote looks like he's in a hook zone. Not sure what happened there. Pic.

    - Used multiple full-house sets.

    - Ben INT. Tries to throw curl with corner Webster trailing to the inside hip. Can't make that throw because Webster will be under it when Wallace breaks on his curl. Big mistake. Pic.

    - Wallace TD. Thing of beauty. Safties took bad angles and Wallace made them pay.

    - Return game in both KR and PR have been outstanding. Something we haven't said in a long time.

    - Though I didn't like the fake FG, it was well executed. Butler led Suisham well and there weren't any tells I could see that would give away a fake. Giants just reacted to it well.

    - 8 yard run by Redman two plays before go-ahead TD. Miller misses initial block on Osi but stays with it, cuts Osi and takes out another Giant in the process to spring Redman.

    - Ramon Foster may be the most underappreciated player on this team by Steelers' nation. What negatives are there to say about him?

    - Keisel finally starting to regain form.

    - Like I've said before, Haley loves running spot routes (curl/flat combo).

    Sacks

    - 1st and 10, 11:12 left in 1st. Empty set, 02 personnel. Rainey motioned from RB to #1 WR. Ben under center, 5 blocking vs 4 rush. Adams can't mirror on Tuck, gets beat to the inside.

    - 2nd and 3, 5:29 in 2nd. Shotgun, 11. 6 v 4. Starks simply beat around the edge by Osi. Returned for a TD by Boley.

    - 3rd and 7, 13:36 left in 3rd. Shotgun, 11. 6 v 4. Tuck lined up over center pre-snap, loops around and drops Ben when Ben is flushed out of the pocket. Coverage sack, nothing available downfield.

Thanks Chidi. Foster still hasn't allowed a sack. He is the overlooked most improved component of our improved O Line play.

Great job bud. Do think the improvment in our running game is partly due to the fact that Adams is seeing more playing tme?

I think he's a better run blocker than Gilbert so that's one clear plus. But I think Colon has really come into his own. Not with just the "wow" plays, he's been doing that from Week 1, but he's consistent. There aren't too many negative plays in either facet. He's not overextending himself in the run game and always finding himself on the ground and while his pass protection isn't spectacular, it's come along too.

Getting Pouncey back was obviously huge too. I said in one of my other recaps that without him, we didn't really have a guy that could get to the second level and take out a LB. So the backs were always being met by a LB coming in free, putting a huge burden on them.

I've been singing that song for awhile now.

    Wow. Fantastic read Chidi.

Foster is a great story. He has certainly had a lot of game time since we we picked him up as an undrafted free agent in 2009.

I wonder if his performance this year will increase the salary required to keep him.

    Great stuff, Chidi.

Razor Ramon Foster is yet another UDFA "gem" found by the Steelers.
