Steelers vs Bengals - Week 7 Thoughts

    "Hi Alex!

    Thanks, as always

    Hugs,
    Marianne"

    First Half

    - Looks like Mike Adams missed his assignment on Wallace end-around. Burfict came in free, dropped Wallace for a loss of six.

    - Swapped Harrison and Keisel on this play.

    - Al Woods, McClendon entered the game on the 5th play. Heyward came in the next.

    - Will Allen came up in the box, missed tackle on BJE, on 14 yard gain on Bengals' first drive. Safety missing tackles usually result in big gains.

    - Hood, Hampton, and Foote especially struggled on the first drive. Couldn't stay square, often washed up and on the ground.

    - Good effort by Rainey to throw a block for Brown on his 21 yard gain. Will earn some brownie points.

    - Not to pour salt in the wound, but just to show how open Batch was on his dropped catch/TD.

    - Ben INT in the end zone. Can't make the throw. Know you look to attack the seam vs two deep safety but everything tightens up in the red zone. Plus, the Z receiver Brown was on a smoke screen so the safety Crocker could focus on Heath. Picture isn't great but it's something.

    - Dwyer's 21 yard run, 6:25 left in second. Well designed, well executeed. Heath used as window dressing, trapping to his right on a play run off the left side. Cornerback Clements reads Miller, follows him the whole way and takes himself out of the play. You can see it on these two pictures.

Legursky shoves one tech Peko, Colon with a solid block, and then Legursky gets to second level and sticks to Maulauga. Huge hole for Dwyer. Too bad he didn't beat the safety, tried to juke but just kinda falls into him.

    - Colon vs Burfict. Lot of angry in that pile.

    - Drive that ended in 47 yard field goal for Suisham. 7 runs, 57 yards (8.1 YPC), 3 first downs.

    - Woodley's INT was total luck but hey, a turnover is a turnover.

    Second Half

    - Batch, Sylvester, stacked on opening kickoff. Probably Sly's fault. KO returned 45 yards. Sly is to the left of the right hash, kinda hard to see but it's there.

    - Curtis Brown came into the game in dime packages, didn't replace anyone. Think this is the first time I've seen us go dime package.

    - Though I don't think Hamp has been the sole reason why the run game has struggled, especially facing these teams that run inside/outside zone, he's obviously not close to what he once was and it's hurting everyone around him. Example here of Bengals running Lead Strong and Hampton being base blocked by the third string center. Allows double teams and chips elsewhere and lets the guards get to the LBs at the next level. Hampton the second defender looking at it from left to right. Clark has to make the tackle.

    - Clark had to be bailed out by Keenan Lewis in the end zone with 11 minutes in the third quarter. Dalton gets him to bite on a shallow crossing route, letting Green get open on the post with the middle of the field open. Luckilly, Lewis had no one in his deep third so he could float back to the ball and tip it away.

    - Saw a few weeks ago us use Pouncey as lead blocker on end arounds. Would start the opposite way, stop, and pivot to become a lead blocker. With him out, we did similar with Heath on a Wallace end around.

    - Sly really struggling on special teams. Penalties and playing out of position. Pinched too much in on another kickoff.

    - 3rd and 8 completion to Brown near end of the third. Supposed to be a slant to Brown but it wasn't there. AB continued on his route, sat down in the zone, and Ben hit him.

    - Rainey TD. So well blocked. Down blocks by Legursky and Foster.

Colon pulling, kicking out the end man.

    Heath kicks out too.

And Mike Adams chips and then drives Malaluga out of the picture. Right side of the screen.

    - 15 yard draw to Dwyer. Again, pull Colon with other key blocks from Foster, Adams.

    - Good pass pro by Dwyer on check down to Will Johnson. Flipped the DB.

    - Drew Butler's leg got caught under in battle between Warren and a Bengal on a 4th quarter punt. Lucky he didn't get hurt.

    - Do give credit to Hamp for his TFL. Shed the center aside, made the stop.

    - Heath with pancake of Michael Johnson play before two minute warning.

    - Dwyer did a little more on the final drive but to me, he's still a "get what's blocked' back. He's come a long way but he doesn't break many tackles and obviously doesn't have another gear. Downhill runner who needs a good line.

    - After a decent start to the year, Foote has struggled. Can't get off blocks, looks worn down already.

    - Keisel with another uninspiring game.

    - Adams did alright but he struggles mirroring to inside moves.

    Sacks

    - 8:42 left in 2nd. 1st and 10, 21 personnel. 6 blockers vs 4 rush. Geathers gets under, past Adams to strip Ben. Cincy recovers.

    - 9:35 left in 3rd. 1st and 10, 11. 5 blockers vs 4 rush. Ben decides against curl to Wallace. Atkins tosses Colon aside.

    - 6:04 left in 4th. 2nd and 10. 21. 5 vs 5. Colon off balance, couldn't mirror, beat by Johnson.

Yup, since late August. That's why these are always up so late. School has me pretty busy.
