Where did you hear that? Everything I've read says the average ref's salary is $150K-$160K a year. With 16 crews of 6 officials each, that's 96 refs, so call it 100 to allow for whatever. So the total ref salaries would be more like $15M.
Not that that's a bad deal at all for them. $150K to work 4-6 months out of the year is a damn sight better than most people will ever see, with or without insurance and pensions.
