On the Steelers: McLendon wraps big paws around job at nose tackle

By Ed Bouchette / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers first signed Steve McLendon after the 2009 draft as a rookie free agent. His big hands are famous, and he needed them or otherwise he could have gotten cramps from signing so many contracts with them.

Over the course of his three previous NFL seasons, McLendon was released five times. That breaks outside linebacker James Harrison's record, although McLendon neither was cut by the Baltimore Ravens nor forced to play in NFL Europe. To quote a former Steelers lineman from the '80s, he was cut so many times he needed stitches.

While I don't know if he will make the impact that James did that would be HUGE, I will just be happy to see him make this team and have any impact at all. I will be pulling for him wouldn't it be cool to have 2 undrafted success stories on this team.

On side note: loved the interview with James...he's a wealth of information. LOL It's all at the bottom of the page.

What did they do, scrape something out behind your knee?

    A. I don't know.

    Q. Can you bounce back at 34 as you might have at 24?

    A. The body doesn't come back as quick, that's just natural.

    Q. What are you doing?

    A. I'm doing whatever it is they tell me to do.

    Q. What can you do?

    A. Whatever they tell me to do.

    Q. And what is that?

    A. They haven't told me nothing yet.

    Q. Are you swimming, stuff like that?

    A. No.

    Q. Can you still have a big season.

    A. Yeah, I'll be all right.

I'll bet money that McClendon is the reason that DeCastro was so distraught earlier in camp.

Good catch. Sounds likely, and if you're right, i gotta say my confidence is getting really high for Mclendon, and still for Decastro.

Alot of people seemed ready to hand Taamu the Nt job after the draft but McLendon has done a great job last year and this camp. Have to wonder if going up against Pouncey all the time has made him better or if he just needed more time to develop.

I'd say a little bit of both.

Obviously we have to see DeCastro in more games, but I went back and watched all the offensive snaps was a part of... I have to say that as a first time rookie, he wasn't bad at all. He looked lost when no one lined up on top of him, or when there was a running play and no one in his vicinity to hit, but those things can be worked through.

count me guilty as one of those guys. Working double teams against Colon/Pouncey, Decastro/Pouncey in practice is just a win-win for the entire team.
