Update: Mike Adams expects to be out 2 weeks

The Pittsburgh Steelers took a calculated risk by starting left tackle Mike Adams in Thursday's preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

    The results were not good.

Adams -- the team's second-round draft pick -- had a debut to forget, allowing two strip sacks of Ben Roethlisberger in a nine-play stretch before leaving the game with a right knee injury.

Adams was taken to the locker room after hurting the knee. The severity of the injury is unknown at this time.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that both Adams and fellow rookie David DeCastro would start Thursday despite some noticeable growing pains in training camp.

"We'll see more about them, and of course we'll know more about them by Thursday night," Tomlin said at the time.

What the Steelers learned was that Adams will need to greatly improve if Pittsburgh intends to plug him into the starting lineup in Week 1. That is, if he's even healthy enough to be considered an option.

It seems his injury isn't that bad, but we'll find shortly.

Yep he is a rookie and still needs alot of work. Him and DeCastro has played at game speed now and can work harder to get where they need to be. They went up against a very good Eagles defense.

Don't forget the Eagles play a wide 9, a very uncommon defense. They come fast and furious on the outside, it's nothing like what these guys have seen in camp or OTA's against the Steelers standard 3-4. You have to block angles more than brunt, as you normally would.

In other words they weren't prepared for what the Eagles do this time. Remember in pre season you don't game plan against specific opponents, you just go in and do what you've been working on in camp.

Kinda stupid when you think about it, particularly when you've got your season in the form of number 7 hanging around back there.

But in a nut shell last night wasn't a real reflection of anything other than a total unfamiliarity with the wide 9 by the line collectively. I'm glad we played these guys in Pre season. On film you just can't get a feel for the difference, the way you have to take away angles, and get away clean with speed from the line.

When we play these guys in Pittsburgh I think we'll be a lot better prepared. And yes I know the Eagles were missing their top two edge rushers, but really the system is what makes Trent Cole special, not vice versa.

This is exactly what i think happened, we were concerned with executing our own plays at game and not necessearily making alot of adjustments as to what the D was doing.

good point zulater, i mean even gilbert didn't look that good, it was a rough night for the whole line. still, the question is, how much do they learn from it and how much better will the starting line be this year. can't afford ben to go down again, we don't have a backup who can carry us into the postseason imho. i just watched the game again, and man beachum really was the weak link in the second half, that he wasn't able to hold his half of a double team and that he looked weak and not explosive at all shows me that he is more of a long term project

I think it also merits bearing in mind that Adams just started running with the ones earlier this week after missing OTAs due to OSU's quarter system.

Won't stop some people from hitting the panic button, all the same:

Mike Adams Looked 'Awful' In Steelers Debut

There is still plenty of time before the season for the Steelers to address issues with their offensive line. Adams could still end up being a valuable player for Pittsburgh.
Exactly the same kind of thinking that got Troy labeled as a "bust" his rookie year. Patience, folks.

I seriously don't understand people. Whats up with all the knee jerk reactions for a guy who played in his first NFL game? Annoys the living Hell out of me.

I guess some people were expecting Anthony Muñoz in his seventh year or something.

Because people, especially some Steelers fans, expect perfection from every player if they are on the field from Ben Roethlisberger to the last guy to make the practice squad.

Adams was a second round pick, these days second rounders are expected to either start immediately or be good enough if they end up playing. Expectations have gone up for many rookies on the Steelers due the performances of guys like Mike Wallace, Antonio Brown, Emmanuel Sanders, and Marcus Gilbert. None of those guys were first round picks and two of them are Pro Bowl players (Wallace & Brown), Sanders has shown that he can be a very good player (when healthy), and Gilbert showed last year to be a good tackle.

Adams missed most of the offseason work due to Ohio State being on a quarters system he couldn't participate in anything other than the first rookie camp.

He needs reps, coaching, and experience in games to catch up. This was his first time in a game in the NFL. Preseason or not, you cannot replicate game speed in practice.

It's the first pre season game. LONG way to go.

The important thing is to learn game speed, find out what is lacking and develop.

Likewise with a victory in the preseason. The Eagles could've swore they won the Super Bowl yesterday. I understand "Win one for Garrett and all that" but a good portion of those guys are going to be unemployed after this week.

No worries yet for the OLine. They didn't look horrible: they looked like individuals. They need to start working as a unit...which should come with time.

The good news is that DeCastro looked pretty good.

We all knew Adams problem was with speed rushers from the outside. And, last night he had problems with speed rushers from the outside. He'll either learn or he won't. Too early to know, though...

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed. Mike Adams really reminded of a Young Max Starks last night. Struggling with speedy outside rushers. On all the pressures the guy ran outside around him, not through him, now if I saw Adams not get a hand on his guy, or get knocked on his ass, I'll start to worry.

On the bright side, he looked good recovering the 2 fumbles, especially the second one.

Is there any word that he'll be able to play in the next game?

Freeney probably won't play much that game.

Adams struggled with speed rushers and consistency in college. I also heard somewhere that he was raw coming out of college. I think he will continue to struggle in the early going
