I think he wants to hold some of this back for the debates. I believe the first is October 3rd. There's no sense blowing his wad over this. Obama has plenty of failure to attack and exploit, and the closer to the day people vote the better. He's already started to clarify this as a key difference from his own, fits-one-state plan in that his was DEFINITELY a penalty, and this is now definitely a TAX. Before, this was a stalemate issue as most voters are simply not astute enough to understand the myriad differences between Romneycare and Obamacare, and they probably both would have just let the sleeping dog lie. Now Romney has an opening to take advantage of...
I've been reading more on this...I see some estimates that of the 30 million who aren't covered now, this MAY only cover as few as 4 million of them (although all the taxes and high sticker price won't drop). When this whole debate started most people glossed over the fact that this wasn't needed, and maybe THAT argument can be resurrected. Of the 30 million, about a third are illegals. They should NEVER fall under any governmnet sponsored health plan, as they are, you know, ILLEGALLY HERE! Then there's a third who are already eligible for some kind of care, the very, very poor, who either don't realize they can sign up or are just too lazy to do so.
Then there's the third I have the biggest problem with, the third who CAN afford this, but just won't. Even a family of 4 can buy catastrophic coverage (high deductible) insurance rather cheaply. It's all I had until I turned 40. I had a 5k deductible, and there was a surprising amount of things that came with it without even a co-pay. It was like $30 a month. There are many, many, many families out there who CHOOSE not to prioritize healthcare. They have big HDTV's, and 500 cable channels, and drive a nicer car than they need to, and drinks their Starbucks 20 days a month, and so on and so forth...they can afford insurance if they wanted to, but they don't want to so they don't. Now we ALL (well, those of us who pay taxes anyway, and I'll end up getting double-dinged since I now have what's considered a "Cadillac Insurance plan") all get to pitch in and pay for their Starbuck's and HDTV's and nice cars.
