Jon Beason Responds to 49ers QB Alex Smith's Comment on Panthers' Cam Newton

Here is what Smith had to say on Wednesday.

"I could absolutely care less on yards per game," Smith said. "I think that is a totally overblown stat because if you’re losing games in the second half, guess what, you’re like the Carolina Panthers and you’re going no-huddle the entire second half. Yeah, Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard games. That’s great. You’re not winning, though."
It was really Smith's only answer to the question, although he could have left out Newton's name from his answer. Of course Smith would not care about statistics or yards per game because he rarely has any games where we stand in shock of his game totals. The 49ers were 13-3 and the overall consensus seems to be that the team won so many games despite their quarterback play and not because of it.

That is why it was strange to see Smith have a response to a question like that. How could he not, though?

Smith is on the top of the world right now. His team went to the NFC Championship last season, his coach loves him and he was just given three key weapons to throw to in addition to what he already has.

Life is good for Smith and the 49ers these days.

That is until Carolina's Panthers linebacker and Newton's teammate, Jon Beason, took to Twitter on Thursday to repsond to Smith's comment on Newton.

"Alex smith, don't hate on Cam Bc your stats would've gotten u cut if Peyton decided to come 2 San Fran.Truth b told..That's after a 13-3 yr."

Re: Jon Beason Responds to 49ers QB Alex Smith's Comment on Panthers' Cam Newton

I don't think that's entirely accurate. His STATS wouldn't have gotten him cut. The fact that it was the first semi-decent year of his career ... the fact that he still was inaccurate, timid, and generally looked shit while putting up ok stats ... the fact that the 49ers had to design their entire offense to hide the quarterback ... and the fact that he had a .380 winning percentage before last year ... THAT would've gotten him cut. That and the fact that one of the most decorated QBs in the history of the game was available.

I mean, right idea, wrong reason, Beason.

Alex Smith has no right to be talking about any quarterback. Alex Smith was merely lucky to be carried by one of the best supporting casts in the league. If the Niners had a real QB, they would have won the Super Bowl.

And this would be a non issue if the 9ers would of drafted this guy. Oh Alex, you have no escape from the "Bust" label.

Hey Beason if you really want to help Cam out, why dont you and the rest of the defense stop somebody! Alex Smith, I thought had a very good season, and what he said about the panthers may be insulting but its true.

What was Alex Smith trying to prove, that he is better than Cam Newton? That he should get some respect as a starting QB. If Newton played with a defense that was 10% as good as the defense Smith played with the Panthers are playoff contenders

Re: Jon Beason Responds to 49ers QB Alex Smith's Comment on Panthers' Cam Newton

I'm sorry, but Alex Smith can say whatever he wants. He played on a 13-3 team that made the Steelers look stupid, and I suspect that even if Ben was healthier, we wouldn't have had the answer at the time for that 49er's defense.

All he basically said was that stats don't matter and wins do, and used Cam Newton as a reference. He is absolutely right. It doesn't matter if Smith's defense carried him or not. I'm sorry that Beason had his little butt hurt by Smith's comment.

Smith could have made the same point without taking a shot at the Panthers. But either way, I don't care too much haha. It's a shame these two teams don't play this season.

Re: Jon Beason Responds to 49ers QB Alex Smith's Comment on Panthers' Cam Newton

I don't see the big deal here.

Basically, he's right. Stats are overrated if you're not winning games. Newton had an excellent season stat-wise, however the Panthers still lost a bunch of games last season, which makes those stats moot.

And Alex Smith didn't have a bad season at all, like so many people think. 90.7 QB Rating, 61.3 Completion Percentage, 3144 yards, 17 TD, 5 INT

He was finally in an offense that was tailored to his strengths instead of asking him to do things that he wasn't very good at. The offense wasn't built to hide the QB, it was made to enhance what he does well. Does it rely on a good run game out of Gore? Yeah. But when you have a back as good as Gore, you lean on him. Then Smith was able to use the play-action passing game to freeze defenses and make plays.

The main problems through Smith's career has been injuries (early in his career the offensive line was pretty crappy and he got beat up a lot). The other problem was that every single year, he had a new offensive coordinator. He's had three head coaches, the first two being defensive minded ones. Each coordinator wanted to change Smith and try to make him do this or that better. Harbaugh came in and did the smart thing, tailored the offense around his strength's instead of trying to fix his weaknesses.

And if it's not for a muffed punt in the NFC Championship Game, the 49ers would have gone to the Super Bowl. That loss wasn't on Smith. Smith played a good game in that game with 2 touchdown passes. And in the divisional playoff game, he had 299 yards and 3 TD passes to beat the most prolific passing offense in NFL history.

Alex Smith was very close to being this decade's Trent Dilfer.

Yeah, this decade's Trent Dilfer except he never won anything.

He was closer to being this decade's Rick Mirer or Tim Couch.

It's not like the stats of Newton were in garbage time....The Panthers had a chance to win in 14 of 16 games this year, but unfortunately the Panthers defense was very bad...The serious injury of Jon Beason did not help.

If the Panthers are better in defense, they will be a contender.Newton is truly a special player.

For Smith, the only thing he has done well is he has made very few turnovers.

Otherwise, the 49ers were one of the worst offense in the 3rd down and the 49ers were awful in the red zone.Akers has attempted 52 field goal, it is a record of the nfl.

Smith also deserves a little blame in the loss against the Giants. The 49ers were 0/13 in 3rd down against the Giants.Dreadful!!!!

The 49ers probably the best defense in the NFL and the ST are unbelievable...This is the reason why they were close to participating in super bowl

Just watching the game between the Steelers and the 49ers and we see why the 49ers were 13-3...The 49ers defense created four turnovers and Andy Lee had an unbelievable game

If this game was the super bowl, I would have given the super bowl mvp to Andy Lee.

Re: Jon Beason Responds to 49ers QB Alex Smith's Comment on Panthers' Cam Newton

QB stats do not matter in regards to winning, and most of the time winning is a team thing, and Smith won more games than Newton largely because the 49ers defense was about 100 times better than Newtons. Also let's not forget that Newton was also a rookie so he was bound to make some mistakes. Alex Smith has no right talking trash towards Newton considering that Newton has put together more pro bowl caliber seasons despite the fact that Smith has 6 more years of NFL experience than Newton
