The situation there is complicated. I'm not sure what our best course of action is, but we will certainly do something, as Assad is killing thousands of civilians each month.
However, I'm concerned about another aspect of this situation: Russia. They are literally pissing in our faces. They shipped one BILLION dollars of arms to Syria last year. China, Iran and North Korea are also in on the action.
If we end up arming the Syrian National Council, we will, in effect, be engaging in proxy war with Russia again, similar to what we did in Vietnam, where Russia and China arms their puppet, and we arm ours. I don't see us going in with our troops (although we could under NATO, or perhaps a UN peacekeeping force), so it's not apples-to-apples, but it's not a great situation.
So while Joe Biden is going on the Sunday talk show circuit bashing Romney for calling Russia our "number one geopolitical foe", and the Obama camp and Bill Clinton pile on and call him backwards, Russia is arming Assad, they were arming Iran and still trade with them, and they are cozy with North Korea. Meanwhile, this nitwit in the White House is looking to completely abolish our ability to put up an effective missile defense shield over Europe (which will also act as an early warning defense grid for us, as well) by trading everything on our side of the table for NOTHING from them. Their nuclear stockpile is old and obsolete, and we have technology they cannot and will not be able to duplicate anytime soon, and Obama's great idea is to completely eliminate our technological advantage and get NOTHING in return for it.
This is yet another reason in a long list of reasons why Hopey McChange has GOT. TO. Go.
