Good win tonight by the Bucs. Thankfully Tony Watson didn't hurt us too bad and our bats were on fire tonight. A special thanks to Brad Lincoln for getting us out of that jam that Watson put us in.

I'd also like to thank Charlie Manuel for choosing to pitch to Cutch in the 8th with a base open and down by 2 runs. Cutch promptly hits a 2-run HR to put them up by 4. What in the world was he thinking?
Way to step up offense on an off-night for the pitching.
nice we split the series and Burrnet gets another win!
McCutchen and Burnett should be All Star starters. How does Tabata still have a job in Pittsburgh the way he has been hitting? It's been brutal.
Talk about an awesome win tonight! Great way to open the series with a fourteen to five victory with nineteen hits! Let's go Bucs!![]()
This month, the Pirates are 16-10, with series wins over the Reds, Indians and Tigers, and a split with Phillies; have hit 38 HR, which is one shy of the team record for any month, and have scored 138 runs, which is the most in the majors. They have also hit 46 of their 72 HR on the road, which tells you how much of a pitcher's park PNC is and why the team is absolutely right to bulk up the organization with pitching as much as we all complain about the lack of hitting. They are also 21-11 since May 23. What a roll they have been on. Just got to hope they can keep it rolling through the second half, especially with the schedule being much more favorable.
I work the night shift, and on my first break I saw the Pirates where down 5-2 I was a little disappointed. but you can imagine my surprise when I went on my lunch break to find out they won 14-5!
GO Buccos! :Off to pirates.com to check out the highlights!:
7-3. The Bucs take the series against the Cards in St. Louis. Alvarez hits a Grand Slam in the 1st.
Bad News: Cutch injures his wrist making an amazing catch. BTW, he had another outstanding day.
Even though the Pirates sweep the Cardinals, I'm happy with them taking the series. I did get to see the West Virginia Power, which is the single a farm team of the Pirates against the local Delmarva Shorebirds. They won 15-10 and had twenty-one hits. I carefully watched Alen Hanson. He's third base and was a beast. He's leading the team with a .334 BA and played good defense. I was a little disappointed I didn't get to see Josh Bell. Plus we sat down extremely low to the field and go to go for free!
They would have won if Erik Bedard didn't suck again. He hasn't been very good at all for the last 2 months. Oh well, payback time coming up for the Astros for winning 2 of 3 against the Bucs earlier this season.
nice blowout today! If only Cincy would drop another game. seems like we have been 1 game back for a long time.
Andrew McCutchen has been destroying fastballs lately. Since June 18, against fastballs he's batting .692 with an OPS of 1.934 and 0 K

They sent Tabata down, I was hoping they would bring up Marte, but they brought up Gorky instead.
From Dejan Kovacevic on Twitter:
Just spoke with another #Pirates official here at PNC Park who says the team's plan for Starling Marte is to shift around the outfield in Indianapolis, most likely through the All-Star break. There is ZERO question of his readiness. It's about corner outfield and about not having a long pause immediately after he arrives. This person said Marte's performance at the plate right now is "through the roof." Marte has made several starts in left but the one Monday was his first.
For those asking why RF for Starling Marte rather than LF, given his superior defensive skill, it's because they're trying to set up the outfield for the long term. Wrote about this back in the spring. Marte has an 80 arm, highest grade on the 20-80 scouting scale. That can be a great weapon home and road, whereas playing LF only helps at home. But obviously, someone needs to step up in left. Alex Presley hasn't done it so far. Neither did Jose Tabata.
Pirates are now 44-36 on the season. They are 8 games over .500 for the first time since the final game of the 1992 season
May I say (albeit late) congrats to the Bucs for you thorough beat down of my Cardinals. Metheny's got some 'splainin' to do. :fuming:

The Cards are missing some key pieces (Berkman, Garcia, Carpenter now done for the season), but Matheny is an awful manager. With all of that talent, the Cards should be much better than they are and are even where they are now in spite of him. They need to dump him at the end of the season regardless of where they finish.
As for the Bucs, I'm still waiting for the annual 12-game losing streak and subsequent collapse, so I'm not getting overly excited. I'm just enjoying the ride while it lasts.
Been watching the Bucs games lately. Not a big baseball fan in general but it's been fun to watch them win. Hopefully they can keep it up.
Good to see another Cardinals fan on here!
Pirates in sole possession of first place at the halfway point of their season and have a good chance to sweep the Astros tonight. The last time they were 9 games over .500 after 81 games was in 1991 (they were 7 games over .500 in 1992 after 81 games, then went 52-19 the rest of the season to finish 96-66).
Pirates place OF Presley on DL with concussion
The Pittsburgh Pirates placed outfielder Alex Presley on the 7-day disabled list with a concussion and recalled Jordy Mercer from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Presley injured himself while attempting to make a diving catch in Tuesday's 8-7 victory over Houston. Presley stayed in the game briefly before complaining of neck pain and whiplash. Manager Clint Hurdle spoke to Presley on Thursday before deciding Presley needed extra time to recover.
Presley is hitting .242 with six homers and 13 RBI in 60 games this season while working mostly in the leadoff spot for the Pirates, who began play on Thursday in first place in the National League Central.
Mercer is 1 for 9 in five games with Pittsburgh this season.

I hope for a speedy and full recovery.
10 games over .500!
80 games left in the season, if we win at least 35 of those we will finally break the losing streak.
Also, if the playoffs started today, we would have the #2 seed.
The Pirates actually have the 4th best record in the majors, behind only the Yankees, Rangers and Nationals. Their 27-13 home record is the best in the majors and they are 24-11 since May 25, which is the 2nd best record in the majors in that time span. If they can somehow get to 12 games over .500 by Sunday, they might - might - have a legitimate shot at breaking the streak since their schedule gets considerably weaker after the break. I still think they need another starting pitcher and bat if they really want to make a run, but at the same time, this winning stretch can't last forever. The 8-12 game losing streak is in there somewhere - I just know it.
The few games that I have been able to watch of the Bucco's this season I have noticed a few things different with them this year. Now, I am a fan of my hometown team but don't get to see much of them unless they are playing the Brave's or Cubs because of where I am, but it seems to me like they are actually playing with confidence, beleiveing that they can win. They also seem to be having fun playing the game, but I guess the game is alot more fun when you are winning. I like them and I do beleive this is the year the streak ends!

It too early to talking, but it would be incredible to see the pirates in the playoffs
it's not impossible!
