    New OT rules passed

New OT rules passed. Same system for regular season as the postseason.

They really should just go to a straight format where BOTH teams get to possess the ball regardless, at least in the playoffs. I mean, the proof that a fluke can happen on any play was the worst QB in the NFL dropping back and luckily completing an 80 yard pass against one of the best defenses in the NFL.

I like it, we can play a team that cant move the damn ball, give them the ball and put our defense out there. 3 and out. Well kick a 3 or go for a TD for the win.

I prefer the coin flip method. If you cannot win in the first four quarters, then whatever happens after that is sometimes more luck than skill and I am fine with that. Keep it simple.

We should not be in OT against such teams.

I liked the sudden death method better.

But. If they are going to insist on this new overtime being in the playoffs, then it should be in the regular season as well. So I'm glad they chose to do this.

But we Have, plenty of times. All we can hope is that this trend ends of playing at the level of lower competition. Not only that, what are the chances that teams will go deep on 2nd or 3rd down plays and flop to get a Penalty and bam there you go FG game over. Wam bam thank you mam warm up the bus.

I don't really like the new OT rule .... nor Goodell, of course. However, for the record, it has been reported that the Steelers were a driving force to implement the new system into the regular season.

I still detest the new overtime rule and it was an unwise decision for the Steelers to make

I don't like the rule either ... just pointing out that sometimes even the Steelers FO doesn't listen to me either. Why? I just can't figure it out.

I heard Goodell changed it because he thought "Sudden Death" conjured up too much violent imagery.

    Re: New OT rules passed

I think this is pretty stupid, and so will most fans the first time this happens:

    - Their team gets the ball first, drives into enemy territory
    - Drive stalls inside the 10, they play it safe and kick a field goal
    - Other team gets the ball and winds up in some hopeless 4th-and-23
    - They know it's do-or-die, so they go for it when they normally wouldn't
    - They somehow make it and go on to score a touchdown

That whole advantage of basically having an extra down when you get the ball second is going to cause a shitstorm when it comes back to bite some team, and rightfully so. You get the ball second in OT, you definitely end up with an advantage knowing what you need to do and being able to adapt your playcalling. Crappy rule, and I don't care that Peyton Manning or Brett Favre didn't get their extra chance, or if some other golden boy doesn't in the future. Boo-hoo.

this is where I'm at. Sudden death's great in my book, and when they changed the rule only for the playoffs I was just scratching my head

at least now it doesn't seem pointless

Yep, and I hope it happens to Peyton Manning's team when it does too, since Peter King's pissing and moaning about what a "travesty" it was when the Colts lost to San Diego in the playoffs several years ago without the mighty Peyton even seeing the ball in OT was pretty much the original impetus for the rule change to begin with, IMO.

Sudden death worked fine for 50+ years. They should've left it alone.

I liked the old sudden death rule as well.

If they insist on changing the OT rules, then at least make it where both teams O get a chance to have the ball in the OT period.

    Re: New OT rules passed

I'm in favor of either a modified college rule, where the ball is put on the 50, or just play a 5 to 8 minute OT. If it is still tied after the specified time in the regular season it ends in a tie. If tied after that specified period in the playoffs it becomes sudden death. Of course, the NFL will never go to a specified period because they are worried about the Networks getting to their next game or other programming.

You know what they really ought to do? Just play the whole overtime period and tell the networks to suck a fat dick. Put an extra hour of spacing between the early and late games if they have to. NOTHING that the networks have on during that time, the gap included, is going to get higher ratings than football. They should not be changing the rules of the game to accommodate TV.

I do not disagree with you ......but they are not going to do that. The Networks don't want compettion from a locally shown 1:00 game cutting into the 4:30 or the 4:30 game cutting into the Sunday Night Game.
