Report: Goodell's salary to 'double' up to $20M

Roger Goodell recently received a five-year contract extension from the NFL, and according to a report, his salary will "double" up to $20 million annually by the end of the deal.

That news comes from Daniel Kaplan of the Sports Business Journal, who also reports that Arthur Blank, Falcons owner and head of the NFL's compensation committee, said Goodell's new deal will "bring Goodell in line [financially] with other top sports commissioners."

“If you compare [Goodell] to any of the other commissioners in other sports, we think he would rank very high in that group, and he needs to be compensated on that basis,” Blank said at the Super Bowl.

MLB commissioner Bud Selig made $18.35 million in 2007, per Kaplan, and has since received two contract extensions. It is a logical assumption that Selig is paid more than $20 million annually at this point.

Goodell received $9.89 million in base salary according to federal tax returns filed by the NFL last year. Though we won't know the actual number of Goodell's new base salary until the next time the NFL files its tax returns (which could be as early as Wednesday), it stands to reason that Goodell will see a significant bump in his base, given that he received the extension just a few weeks ago.

And while the response from NFL players on Twitter -- Falcons wide receiver Roddy White wondered "How in the hell can [you] pay a man this much money that cant run tackle or catch" -- hasn't been ideal, it's difficult to get too angry at what Goodell's bringing in.

Doesn't he make a enough money stealing it from players through fining them for hard hits?

That is a convenient salary for him because that is about how much money he owes to players for stealing from them through bogus fines

I'm no fan of Goodell, but he doesn't see a penny of those fines. They go to charity.

Roddy White isn’t thrilled with Roger Goodell’s $20 million salary

It probably won't surprise you to learn that Roger Goodell makes a lot of money, but you might be surprised at just how much. Pro Football Talk ran an item Monday saying that Roger Goodell, by 2019, will be making $20 million a year.
If that figure seems high to you, you're not alone. Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White is not on board with Goodell's salary. He fired off a bunch of tweets about it, which I've compiled here and edited as best I could for purposes of readability. Here's Roddy:

Quote Originally Posted by Roddy's Tweets

Roger Goodell is getting over, never seen anything like it, 20 million for looking over the league with tremendous help. I guess the NFL is banking. The NFL is not a company, it's a nonprofit organization that makes a lot of profit.
I'm not into arguing who is and isn't overpaid. I mean, it's a free-market economy, and if you can generate revenue, then you get paid. Yes, we end up with linebackers making 370 times the salary of a school teacher, and that's obscene, but that's capitalism. I know that no one is suggesting socialism as an alternative.
The same system that allows Roger Goodell to make $20 million a year is the same system that allows Roddy White to sign a six-year deal worth $48 million. Who's overpaid? The guy making $20 million who wears a suit and makes decisions in board rooms, or the guy who wears a helmet and catches oblong pigskins?
I offer no answer of my own. I just hope both men are able to find peace with themselves and their salaries while driving around in their Bentleys.

    From the comments area...

Roddy White needs to shut his mouth. If it wasn't for Goodell's awesome leadership, the league would have become defunct years ago and his ungrateful ass would be unemployed.

The players are going to get more money with the new TV deal and subsequent higher salary cap, not to mention that by nature, the next guy gets more than the last. Goodell should be allowed the same. It was like a rookie contract. He did good things and is now rewarded with even more money.

Wonder if his salary is tied to revenue at all. If the NFL is a $10,000,000,000/yr business, including all gates, TV, radio, merchandise, etc. (Just guessing here, but does anyone know the actual number?) His salary is what, .2%?

Or, if each team spends 120,000,000 on player salaries, that is 3,840,000,000 as a whole. Yeah, 20,000,000 is pretty much chicken scratch, which is what he deserves.

The NFL is a billion dollar business. It's leader should be getting paid an amount that reflects that, especially when he helped to work out a new TV deal that's going to bring in a ton new revenue and helped save the season.

The numbers are all relative. Players get so much today because the salary cap is so large. It would be ridiculous for them not to get paid as much as they do, save for a few people. Same with Goodell.

I think what people are pissed about is that "brings in more money" is not the same thing as "good for the game," but it's being treated as such, and really too many people are buying it.

Well yeah - obviously that's what they care about. I just don't get why some people can't make the distinction that financial success for the league is a separate issue from whether or not the game has improved. Or why it's OK to consider them different without being a "delusional Steelers fan." I hear Survivor gets a lot of viewers and is a roaring financial success too, but that doesn't mean it's improved TV.

Speaking of improved TV, the NFLN with Pee-on and Michael Irvin have such sophisticated use of the English language, it's almost like Masterpiece Theater.

Who says the distinction hasn't been made? I view it as a distinction and still stand by my point.

And hey, money equals power. The NFL became as powerful as it is because of money. It started out as nothing and grew and expanded because of revenue. It's a business.

Obviously, it's a business. But, it's become so overblown, it's sickening. And I'm not talking about the pussifiying of football either. These pregame/postgame/halftime shows are sickening. The Super Bowl party shows are full of pop music fluff. The 22 hour pregame shows make me sick of looking at football other than the Steelers. Yes, it's a business but do we really need the "NFL Honors" show? They have the ESPYs for sports awards, that's enough. This isn't the academy of football players of america. The Kickoff game and entertainment on the first Thursday is overblown hype. And no, I am NOT a fan of Thursday Night football. For a commisioner that says he wants to protect players from injuries, playing Sunday and then turning around and playing on the road Thursday night will surely help recovery time - but that's for another thread.

It's television, it's media, everything is overblown. Especially something so popular like the NFL, it's hard to be quiet.

A lot of the safety rules have been about HOW a player hits, not how often one hits. That's been the primary focus of the rule changes/studies.

Also quick side note. With the NFL moving kickoffs to the 35 yard line, concussions were cut in half on kickoffs this season. A prime example of a rule change fans didn't like, and players didn't/don't like, but will later in their life when they can remember their own name.

Yeah, that tends to happen when contact is essentially removed from the equation. Problem being, contact is part of the game. Well, until it's finally legislated out of the game once and for all and they're playing with flags around their waists, anyway...

So the goal is to lessen concussions without lessening or changing contact? How exactly do you propose going about that?
