Twenty-eight percent of NFL arrests due to DUI
The USAToday pointed out an interesting statistic today in light of recent reports of NFL players with DUI arrests: about one-third of all arrests of NFL players are due to DUI or DWI.
The issue is so prevalent that the NFL has paired up with anti-DUI organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to introduce a program similar to a victim's impact panel for all Rookies. Additionally, some NFL teams use the Safe Ride Solutions program.
Ironically, one of the nine teams offering this program is the San Diego Chargers organization. Wide receiver Vincent Jackson was arrested before a key playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2008. He was later driven to practice by a teammate when he was unable to drive himself.
Just this week, Detroit Lions President Tom Lewand was arrested on suspicion of DUI. Byron Westbrook, cornerback for the Washington Redskins, was acquitted on charges of DUI earlier this week. This represents just a small handful of the cases brought against NFL players, from bench riders to all stars, in the past year.
NFL's Adolpho Birch, VP of player development, told the USAToday anti-DUI initiatives are among the league's top priorities going forward. He commented this problem is not unique to the NFL. At a time when national DUI levels and DUI fatalities are trending down, the NFL has defied statistics by failing to significantly reduce DUI arrests among players.
The player conduct regulations in place do provide for a suspension or administrative penalty for players arrested for any reason - including DUI - during the season or in the off-season. This policy will apply even to Lewand; it applies to all members of an organization. The effect of these policies, including MADD's involvement, remains to be seen.
