Report: Peyton Manning's Chances of Retiring Could Be 'Better Than' 50 Percent

Peyton Manning hasn't suited up for the Colts this season and his future is a bit up in the air as he battles back from offseason neck surgery. But could his career be over?

That's the feeling that Fox Sports' Chris Myers has after speaking with the Indianapolis quarterback this weekend. In fact, Myers thinks there's "better than" a 50 percent chance Manning will retire.

On Sunday evening, Fox Sports Radio's Ben Maller tweeted: "Fox's Chris Myers reporting on FSR, after speaking with Colts Peyton Manning in Indy, he feels better than 50% chance Manning retires."

That would be a shame. What happened to his neck again? It just wore down over the years?

The Colts won't trade or cut Manning. The better question is whether Manning will ever play again. Neck surgeries and multiple ones at that are no joke. There's a better chance he never plays again and from the sounds of it from people who spoke to Peyton, it doesn't sound great. If he plays, he'll be a Colt...

Re: Report: Peyton Manning's Chances of Retiring Could Be 'Better Than' 50 Percent

INDIANAPOLIS, IN—Two days after his Indianapolis Colts lost 27-19 to the equally beleaguered Carolina Panthers, dropping their record to 0-11, Peyton Manning announced his intention to retire at the end of this season.

Tossing his horseshoed helmet into the ring of the upcoming 2012 race, Manning has made clear his intention to win the gubernatorial race by replacing Mitch Daniels, the popular Indiana governor who is term-limited and unable to run for re-election.

“It is time to for me to get back at it and lead the people of Indiana to bigger and better things,” remarked Manning in a press conference late Monday afternoon at Lucas Oil Field. “I took the Colts from being the laughing stock of the NFL to a team that every other team wanted to be, and there is no reason why I cannot do the same for the state of Indiana.”

Manning’s announcement was largely a formality, since NFL gadfly Jay Glazer had already revealed via Twitter on Sunday night that the team doctors believe Manning’s injured neck would need complete fusion at the end of the season, that Manning would not be cleared to ever take another snap, and his storied 13-year career would effectively end.

“I full well believe that with the support of God and my family,” Manning asserted, “this election is winnable, despite my lack of experience in politics. Andrew Luck becoming a Colt is almost inevitable and it is time to look for another job here in the capitol of the crossroads of America. I am excited as a Junebug in May to enter this race and see what I can do to push Indiana to be the best in the country each and every week.”

If he does have to retire that's a shame and, no matter if you liked Peyton or not you have to say he was one hell of a qb.

I don't think so..........in fact, this makes me mad. I think Luck is the most NFL-ready QB to come out in 25 years. I'll be furious if the year after Manning retires, the Colts turn around and end up with another all-time great QB for another 15 years....in fact, I'm trying to think if that has ever happened before.....

Almost, but the Steelers passed on Dan Marino.

Edit: Actually, I would consider what the 49ers did with Montana to Young pretty close to what you're talking about.

I will feel so bad for Peytoon if he ends up having to end his career this way. I don't see the Colts trading him - if he goes out, it will be on his terms. I could see him being a coach and continuing to do his goofy commercials which I've actually come to enjoy.

It's always unfortunate to see a career end due to injury but 13 yrs is a hell of a run! I hope Ben makes it that long with all the punishment he takes behind the line.

I always liked Peyton Manning and it's sad is happening to him.

Peyton is one of the best player in NFL history and the impact it had with the Colts was amazing.

If I except the steelers players, Peyton Manning and Kurt Warner are my two favorite players that I have seen play.

Well, Bruce Arians is credited with helping develop Manning. It's true, look it up...so there would be a certain symmetry to that. But let's not wish ill-will in advance for Peyton....just TALKING about the next OC will probably start some people complaining about his future playcalling...

I think that qualifies...although Montana had only 10 years and Young 8. Two HOF caliber QB's back-to-back by one franchise is exceptionally rare.

All-time great players more often than not tend to not make very good coaches (see: Joe Greene). Besides, I think there would be a huge butting of heads between Manning and Roethlisberger concerning Ben's aversion to the film room, among other things.

Manning is not just a great player, he is a great student of the game and that is what it takes to be a good coach. His work ethic is second to none too so to instill that on players alone would be worth its weight in gold.

I was going to say Montana and Young but someone else beat me to it. That's probably the only example of it in history. You could kind of make the argument that the Raiders had something similar with Lamonica, Stabler and Plunkett all in a row as championship-winning QBs. But they're more in the class of good but not all-time great.

Anyway ... there's always the hope of a bust. Remember, people were also saying Jeff George was the most polished QB in years when he came out. And if not that, there's always torn ACLs and rotator cuffs.

That would be the defense. As I recall, Stanford still scored 30-some points that game.

Well, then good news. Why the hell am I defending him anyway. Maybe that's my natural reaction being in the Bay Area and assuming the Raiders or 49ers were going to be terrible enough to get the top pick. But he's going to be on the Colts, so screw him.

Re: Report: Peyton Manning's Chances of Retiring Could Be 'Better Than' 50 Percent

What Luck was doing was the same thing Ben tried to do his Senior year when Miami played Iowa (and that was when Iowa's defense was fucking ferocious). He shouldered too much of the burden on himself, and tried to do too much. It was not Ben's best game, and anyone watching that isolated game would have said to themselves "Well, he's a nice mid-major college QB but he'll bust out in the NFL".

Luck (and RGIII for that matter) literally MAKE their teams. If not for those two QB's, you're looking at team winning 4-5 games. But a single player can't beat a whole team. That, incidentally, is why I'm split right down the middle on who deserves the Heisman more...
