Report: Norv Turner needs “drastic turnaround” to save job

It may not be a big deal that Jerry Rice is hammering Norv Turner in the media.

It’s a much bigger deal that Chargers owner Dean Spanos is growing restless with his head coach. Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune writes that only a “drastic turnaround” will save Turner’s job.

Spanos has wondered about repeated game management decisions, according to Acee. Turner’s Chargers teams have grown slightly worse every year, and it looks like Spanos has run out of patience.

    true

It is the unluckiest coach in the history of sports(playoffs).

I am sure he would have been able to win the super bowl, but he was very unlucky.

When he's shitcanned, how long do you think it will be before certain factions on this board start the "Fire Arians, hire Turner" chants?

Jerry Rice is one of the greatest players of all time and he played under Norv Turner in Oakland.

So his opinion of Turner carries a little weight.

Rice says that Rex Ryan was right: The Chargers would have won a title or two with Ryan in San Diego.

“Norv Turner is one of those coaches that just can’t you over the hump,” Rice said on SportsCenter Monday. “I played under this guy, it’s just something about Norv Turner and say, a Bill Walsh. Bill Walsh would really give you that incentive to go out there and play football.”

Host Chris McKendry pointed out to Rice that most coaches would suffer in comparison to Bill Walsh. Rice didn’t want to hear it.

“I played under Norv Turner and I know what he brings to the table,” Rice said.

Fire AJ Smith while youre at it too. AJ Smiths ego got in the way over ONE personell decision after they went 14-2 and LT had an MVP season, and he hired a tool to coach a very talented team that constantly came up short. You dont think that moapy attitude from Norv doesnt rub off on the players and all of them play like Norv coaches. I hope they can his ass. Marty Schottenheimer deserved so much better . I hope he comes back to the league.

I would take Norv Turner over Arians, definitely. He may be an awful head coach, but he has a brilliant offensive mind, in the same way that Wade "Droopy Dog" Phillips is a terrible HC, but a great DC.

As long as Turner is in San Diego they will never win a championship. He should have been fired two years ago.

100% right on. Could never understand how they bring in a guy who hasn't accomplished anything other than a sub .500 record as a head coach to replace an established, successful coach who just went 14-2. Marty might never have one the big one, but he turned around 3 different teams, had better than a .600 career winning percentage and made the playoffs 13 out of 21 years as a head coach. Norv was a good OC, he's never accomplished squat as a head coach. Took a great team and slowly turned it into crap.

Exactly. The guy sucks as a head coach everywhere he goes, but he was one of the best coordinators in the game when that was his job. Perfect case of a guy who needs to learn his role.

Maybe if you threw in a few cases of Yuengling Porter, to go with the chips. After all, you'd be getting a very good OC and we'd be getting, well.................................... chips and beer!

Re: Report: Norv Turner needs “drastic turnaround” to save job

Norv Turner should be fired tonight. 3rd and 4 in OT, ball at the Broncos 31, and he doesn't give his "elite" qb a chance to convert the 3rd down and get into easier fg range? Instead opting to hand off, which resulted in a 5 yard loss, and a subsequent 53 yard fg miss. Which of course gave the Broncos ideal field position to win the game. I know Rivers has been struggling some thing year, but that's a real simple situation for a veteran qb. Make your play if it's there, if not get the ball out and avoid the sack, take your 48 yard fg.

Anyway if I'm the coach and you sink with Rivers there, what can anyone say? You put the game in the hands of a veteran qb. Even if he's not 100% he still has a brain and can avoid the negative play.

Turner may be the first casualty of this season. I would not keep him beyond this year.

My brother-in-law and his 2 sons are Chargers fans. I keep telling them to come and join Steelers Nation, but they are sticking with the sinking ship. I feel sorry for them.

BoLT Fan called this on the old board, way back when they first fired Schottenheimer and hired Norv. He said that as a coordinator Norv is Pavarotti, and as a head coach he's William Hung.

Norvie pretty much sealed his fate yesterday.

A stacked 14-2 team and AFC contender and he ran it into the ground in five years. Though the real clown here is A.J Smith. Firing Marty after a 14-2 season and pulling the trigger on this clown. Even if the Chargers failed that year, the core of that team was set to contend for years to come.
