Harbaugh: Cundiff's missed field goal might've been difference

Kicker is 0-of-3 from beyond 50 yards, 14-of-14 from under 50

The Ravens’ shocking loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars ultimately was decided by five points. But could the outcome have been different if Billy Cundiff had converted that 52-yard field-goal attempt in the third quarter?

Coach John Harbaugh seems to think so. At the time of the miss, the Ravens trailed the Jaguars 9-0, but might have the field goal shifted momentum in the Ravens’ favor?

“That was a tough miss yesterday,” Harbaugh said during his weekly briefing Tuesday. “You know, they made three 50-yard-plus field goals, and we missed our one, and that was probably the difference in the game. So that’s something that we’re going to be good at as we go forward.”

Knowing your team's relative strength's and weaknesses is part of being a good coach. Obviously you don't have an elite kicker, so either find one or don't bitch when you lose a game in part because of it.

As that saying applies to Harbuagh, more like a dozen or so. At least as far as excuses go per week.

Harbaugh is right and the loss in fact, had nothing to do with the ill-fated onside kick that the team botched.

All he does is make excuses. Even if they made that field goal, the final score would have been twelve to ten.

First I don't see it as excuse making, he was asked specifically about the kick. But the score would not have been 12-10, the game would have been 10-9 and they would have kicked deep instead of onsides, I doubt a young Jag team would make a 2 minute game winning drive.

As for blame, he should blame himself for going onside kick. When you have a great defense you trust they will get the job done. The Jags didn't show much potential for a long drive and you have to put your D against a rookie QB in that situation, force a 3 and out. He F'd up.

Re: Harbaugh: Cundiff's missed field goal might've been difference

Someone needs to explain to that douchebag that there are plenty of other reasons your team lost.

COULD a FG there have swung momentum to the Ravens? Yeah, it could have, but nobody knows for sure.

Going for the onside kick, a call that Harbaugh had to make himself, was stupid. You have the best defense in the league and all the Jags had done is kick field goals. Kick it deep and force them to drive a long field to score.

Your offense was pitiful all night. You didn't use your best player, Ray Rice...you put the game on the shoulders of Regular Joe Flacco and he crumbled. Yeah, he drove the Ravens for for a TD....but he threw an interception to win the game for the Jaguars.

Good job of throwing your kicker under the bus. The correct answer to the question you were asked goes along the lines of this: "We had to go for the points there, it was my call to kick that field goal. It didn't work out, that's on me." Be a fucking man and own up. You'll never hear a REAL coach like Mike Tomlin throw a player under the bus, even if he deserves it.

Well, his kickers confidence is shot now.

First off, a 52 yarder is no gimme. The NFL success rate has been under 50% (I know it was 46% in 2008, 47% in 2007). Secondly, you NEVER scapegoat one player as a coach. That kind of stuff is for places like here. I would not be surprised if locker room issues didn't start to have an attrition effect on the Rats. They don't seem to be circling the wagons, rather panicking and acting like jackasses as they do it.

    14-14 INside 50?

Guess what? If they had gained a measly 3 more yards, he would have hit it.
