Browns' Benard hurt in motorcycle crash

Cleveland Browns reserve DL Marcus Benard has been involved in a motorcycle crash immediately following Monday's practice.

Reports say the crash occurred at 2pm on Interstate 71 at West 65th Street, and that Benard crashed into a wall.

There is no report on his condition yet, but the lineman was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center, according to confirmations from both the team and the hospital...........

Browns DL Marcus Benard, hospitalized after an accident, suffered no life-threatening injuries and will make a full recovery, his agent...

Motorcycles are fun, but you must be a responsible rider. You can also be very safe, but you must keep watch for other drivers.

While I love motorcycles, it doesn't matter how safe you are when other drivers don't pay attention or don't see you....or if you hit something slick and wreck.

And I am going to take a guess here that it's probably in his contract that he's not to be riding a motorcycle....especially after the entire Kellen Winslow incident.

These players make a ton of money to play a sport. And while yes, I know to them it's a job and for many it gets to be a grind like it does for us, they are payed a whole lot of money. I don't understand why players can't put stuff like this aside until they retire, especially after the Ben Roethlisberger and Kellen Winslow accidents earlier this decade.

I am glad he's going to be fine after his broken arm heels, but I wouldn't be shocked if the Browns voided his contract over this, to send a message to the rest of the team if nothing else.

I'm torn on this one since I'm a rider, too. Does a team (or any employer) have the right to dictate what you do on your own free time that doesn't conflict with your official duties? Can a team tell you not to drive sports cars, go sky diving or rock climbiing, or scuba diving? Some past times have high inherent risks. But, regardless of that debate:

Cleveland Browns defensive lineman Marcus Benard has been charged with driving under a suspended license and reckless operation following a Monday motorcycle accident on Interstate 71.
You've got the obligation to be responsible and LAWFUL if you are going to play dangerously.

With the amount of money the teams invest in the players, yes they do have a right to put in the contract that players can't ride a motorcycle, drive a sports car (which normally isn't in the contract, it's driving it recklessly that's normally in the contract these days), go sky diving, and other activities that are inherently dangerous.

A real motorcyclist, not one who pretends to be one and just ride to Starbucks or stare at the bike in the driveway- would find it very difficult not to ride on a regular basis. I would find it difficult not to ride or stop water skiing or SCUBA diving or singing in the shower.

The thing is, the NFL player should be able to make those sacrifices. If they want to have a career in the NFL, they have to.

The average NFL career is less than three years, if they are good it's longer. If they can't put the bike or whatever it is away until they retire, then they can go and get a job that isn't as lucrative, famous, or fun.
