Steelers bringing back Sutton
The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing free-agent cornerback Cameron Sutton, his agents told Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Originally drafted by the Steelers in 2017, Sutton played for the AFC North club for six seasons before spending the 2023 campaign with the Detroit Lions.

Hopefully, the team feels the need to shed more light on the events with the fanbase.

Re: Steelers bringing back Sutton
Good signing, for the vet min. He was apparently misused in Detroit. And the charges against him have been reduced - not surprised
-
Re: Steelers bringing back Sutton
I like it a lot. WR is the weakest position now.

Me too, love that it's a one-year prove it deal for vet minimum.
Although I do expect Goodell to suspend him for at least a couple of games.
Now we just need a WR2 and we're ready to start the season.

Re: Steelers bringing back Sutton
Now the corner room is looking better, as slot corner was a big question mark.
JPJ/DJ/Sutton and 3 younger players to develop in Trice/Rush/Bishop.

Re: Steelers bringing back Sutton
Hope he can beat the competition and not choke this opportunity.

Yup, will be interesting to see who, if any of the 3 young guys steps up. Trice comeback from injury, Bishop a potential slot corner that develops or not and Rush was a ball hawk at the Senior Bowl and showed the ability to flip his hips and cover well, but if I recall he was a converted WR that still needs to continue to develop.
But the talent looks promising.

Re: Steelers bringing back Sutton
Cam should return after this Week and the bye week to face the Commanders…

Re: Steelers bringing back Sutton
I still say Bishop reminds me of William Gay. Not necessarily that their styles are similar, but in the kind of way they are playmakers and liabilities at the same time. Of course, Beanie is still young. Either way, play makers are good to have in the mix.

Gay was outmatched on the outside, but good old reliable in the slot after a few seasons under his belt. Always need these unsung guys on the team. I thought Deshon Elliot would be that guy for us but instead he's cranking out an All-Pro season

Re: Steelers bringing back Sutton
I still remember Billy Gay getting run over and stomped on losing his tackling credibility.

Yes. Unfortunately, a lot of fans didn't understand his value. They only remember him when he was outmatched by a bigger stronger WR.

Happens to the best sometimes. Ask Brian Erlacker.

Re: Steelers bringing back Sutton
was looking forward to the improved play going from Beanie to Sutton ... but after the last two weeks of play its gonna be hard to sit Beanie IMO he is improving and becoming a turnover producer

I expect Beanie to play a good bit especially the first couple of weeks. Beanie is play maker so we have to let him play. However, when we run into Burrow, Mahomes and maybe Allen down the road, I would trust Sutton more not to get taken advantage of.
-
Re: Steelers bringing back Sutton
This cornerback group has come a long way from having to play guys like Antwon Blake, Ross Cockrell, Artie Burns etc.

Pretty good problem to have. More depth in the secondary.

I just hope they do it with balance , dont wanna throw Sutton into the fire to much to soon and do not want to stunt Beanies growth and confidence

Sutton is a better CB than Bishop at this point and only under contract until the end of this year. They can easily work him in as the slot CB and have the flexibility to use Sutton outside as well if needed, plus get Bishop reps but I expect Bishops amount of snaps to go down.
If its about putting the 3 best CB on the field, I think its Porter, Jackson, Sutton. Bishop going to get reps in dime packages and there is still half a season to go where injuries can happen and dept this a good thing.

there is a lot to consider for sure and no matter how it happens if we do not win the SB someone will second guess it all based on who was on the field at the time of a crucial loss

Re: Steelers bringing back Sutton
Unless Sutton forgot how to play football and his conditioning is atrocious; he is a better CB than Bishop. Mentally, he is far far far (did I say far?) further along in his development than Bishop. In fact, Bishop spoke after the Jets game about how Sutton being allowed back in the facility had helped Bishop understand his defensive responsibilities better.
Remember when Sutton was last here, they would run him back to FS and drop Minkah into the mix in the "robber" role all post-snap on coverage rotations? Minkah got a couple turnovers out of those looks. I would be far more comfortable with Sutton executing those role swaps than Bishop. But I am not an NFL coach.
Also, I realize Beanie is on a heater with the INTs. But 2 of the 3 were more than a little fluky. The first one....that seems like the kinda thing that Sutton taught Beanie how to prepare for....

Sounds like you’re dismissing Bishop a bit. Don’t get me wrong I’m a fan of Sutton, but he is limited. Why didn’t we hang on to him.

Because the Detroit Lions offered Sutton a ridiculous cotract that we were right about not matching.

The Lions gave him #1 follow the other teams best WR around cash.
I’m viewing him as a sub package matchup piece.
Basically Bishop but football smarter via veteran experience.
All that’s left to see is if Sutton can still run.

….and he might be able. He was probably the best that we got of that draft class. “For me” that verdict is still out. Someone must know something, being suspended for the first start of the season. Hope he’s in great shape.

The one that bounced off Garret Wilson's pads and back to Bishop. Not worthless, but could be classified as a dong INT. The first INT in the Jets game where he undercuts the route was solid coverage.
