Russell Wilson's Next Contract
ESPN's Dan Graziano recently took a crack at estimating Wilson's next contract following his latest gutsy win over the Bengals on Sunday.

I didn't follow through to the original article or whatever by Grazianno...but he seems to estimate Baker Mayfield's $100 million three year deal.
And that feels kinda about like what will happen. There is only one starting QB getting less than that on a non-rookie deal. And it is because Geno signed his deal one year earlier. Goodell-Nomics does inflation too!
Figure the only fussing and fighting is on the length and amount guaranteed.

Re: Russell Wilson's Next Contract
Wilson wants 4 or 5 years and the Steelers should accommodate him with a total figure. I suppose by age 40 he will be done.

I think we need and wait to see how the rest of the season plays out and if we win any playoff games.
-
Re: Russell Wilson's Next Contract
They could give him 4-5 year deal but the actual deal only be 2-3 realistically.
-
Re: Russell Wilson's Next Contract
The Mayfield model has been thrown around by almost everyone for the past few weeks. That would be a good solution.

I don't know if you're messing with me or not, but that's the right idea.
At least wait till next week. :boink:

Re: Russell Wilson's Next Contract
Offer both of them $200M per year for 10 years fully guaranteed and whoever signs first is our QB for the next generation. What could possibly go wrong?

$200 million per year seems like a bit much.

To Kenny Pickett, sure.
But it does seem a bit much for any other NFL QB.

Fully guaranteed for 10 years.

I agree. One issue with age is that you can hit the wall really quick. Now, I'm not sure that's true of Russ this year because he sat for the first what, quarter of the season? But it's worth finding out if he can go the distance. Thankfully, we have ownership that does not negotiate contracts during football season.
-
Re: Russell Wilson's Next Contract
Speaking of Mayfield, I would take him. But if Russ wants 4-5 years, I hope the last 2-3 are voidable or something and absolutely not fully guaranteed. $25m/year for 4 years with a way out after 2, or better, $20m/year for 5 with a way out after 2. I would prefer not Fields as he is not a passer and not accurate, so move on from him and sign a backup that can actually throw the ball.

Re: Russell Wilson's Next Contract
Sam Darnold is a free agent. Just sayin… Those who’d say pass, must not have watched him much this year.

His price just went up.

He made himself a boat load of cash this year. Still only 27. So many different possibilities where they go next year. I do think Wilson and Tomlin have a bromance going on though. Not sure there’s much of a market for Wilson anywhere else. Of course Raiders or Jets could offer 2 year 100 mill guaranteed, lol.

Which means it's less likely that the Vikings retain him. To commit long term big dollar would be to shelve their draft pick.

True, the Vikings just drafted JJ McCarthy in the first round, teams that do that typically don’t re-sign their bridge QBs.

Maybe for 10-12 M but Darnold will command 30+ for 3-4 years.

I would say the opposite and think the Vikings rather retain him and let McCarthy grow behind him. There’s no point to rushing a QB into the starting lineup. It fails more times than not.

But do you pay franchise money? That’s my point.

What should Vikings do at QB in 2025? Sam Darnold makes Minnesota's J.J. McCarthy decision tougher

If the Vikings win a playoff game, I think they do. 2-3 year deal to help McCarthy.

He’ll get better offers.

Re: Russell Wilson's Next Contract
It is a league that is ALWAYS desperate for QBs.
Darnold
Wilson
Fields
Someone will pay all of these guys to be their starting QB in 2025.
If the Vikings let Darnold out of town without an offer (which is what my Vikings nerd friends think will happen), then that will say that the team feels that Darnold is a product of their system and not "fixed". But some team (Giants?) will figure they can finish fixing him.
It is going to be a wild QB ride the first couple days of the off-season.

It’s definitely going to be fun to watch…
