Agreed.
I liked Kenny and wanted him to succeed but it is a new day and Omar is not Colbert or Donahoe. He is ready to make as many moves that are cost efficient and to win.
Plus he owns the Bears GM

Why? Can the Steelers not pick up the 5th year option on Fields up until May 2nd of this year? Please elaborate.

The 5th year option is a right that only the team that drafted the player has. Once a player is traded, the new team does not have any of the rights that the original team had, including the right to exercise the 5th year option. The 5th year option is a 1-year contract that is fully guaranteed for injury
I seen a few folks debating it on twitter so I googled it and found the above ... maybe its wrong but sounds reasonable

Re: Russell Wilson is now a Steeler
Justin Fields is due $3,233,448 and the #Steelers will now have the rights to his fifth-year option.
Pittsburgh’s QB depth chart is under contract for under $4.5M total. https://t.co/ym2zUoOfST

I think this is incorrect. The new team has the same rights regarding the 5th year option. I'm 99.9% sure. The Panthers did it with Sam Darnold a couple years ago.

Everyone is in it for themselves. I agree with your assessment of Russ. Of course, credit to him for saying the right things, at least.

Yeah, this article on NFL.com about who from 2021 should have the 5th year option picked up or not talks about it like its still in the cards for Trey Lance to have his option picked up, up. I think the team that players are traded to can still pick up the option.
Weighing fifth-year options for 2021 NFL Draft's first-round selections: Who merits further commitment?

Sure, they are in it for themselves, but I think there are guys that will shoot straight and tell you what is on their mind. Joey Porter Sr. , James Harrison, Marshawn Lynch, etc.
I think Russ tells people what they want to hear and then does whatever he wants. The whole thing about having his own office in Denver when Hackett was coach and then not being willing to give his phone number out to fellow Seahawks players like Marshawn Lynch (interview on club Shay Shay) is just the kind of shady stuff that I dont know how its gonna play with guys in the locker room.

If the date has passed, they don’t have the rights. If the date on the contract has not occurred, they do have the rights. The team that acquires a player in the trade acquires the contract as well.

Sure, there is no question that Ben was an entitled prick and in the early years, somewhat of a douchebag... but I bet he gave his cell # to Bettis and Hines. I bet he didnt have his own office on the administration floor of the building so that he didnt have to hang out in the locker room with other players. And I never saw him making up corny lines or sayings to feed to the media.
There is just a phony narcissist feel to Wilson.

Bettis and Hines didnt act like thugs (see Marshawn who was run out of buffalo) not everyone like everyone that is a fact of life ... Marshawn has had run ins with the law has acted like a thug .... next up is Sherman who has also had runs ins with the law as has Earl Thomas .... Many people tend to distance themselves from unsavory characters that is how you avoid being lumped into the same category of people in which they have proven to be .... hell some of the stuff Richard Sherman has done if it was you or me we would still be in jail and no drivers license for many many many years but not him

This isnt about Earl Thomas, Richard Sherman or Marshawn Lynch. But if it was I think we could see that Lynch is a success story growing up in poverty in Oakland area and does good charity work for those communities with the platform that he has now.
The fact of the matter is that in his first 2 stops, Wilson was some kind of QB that distanced himself from other players on those teams and had his own office under Hackett in Denver, which Sean Payton took away and made him go and spend time in the Broncos locker room along with the rest of the team. Really a weird dynamic from a guy that is supposed to be a team leader, so I really dont expect that much different.
Seattle chose to let Russ go and instead move forward with Geno Smith. Denver left the most dead money on their cap to cut Wilson loose. Sure the Steelers signed him at bargain basement contract and that is great, but I still dont expect much from Wilson as there may be 20 better QB's in the NFL than him next year. But at least the Steelers are trying to be better with Fields and Wilson.

Russell Wilson is now a Steeler
Never understood why people give Marshawn crap about being a gang member or “thug”.
Lynch was raised by a single mother with a father that was in and out of jail for most, if not all of his childhood. Living in a ghetto that got no help from outside. Dude overcame big time. Got a ride to Cal after becoming a great athlete, had a great NFL career, helps the community much more than a lot of NFL players. He got a DUI (maybe two) and doesn’t want to talk to the media…they label him a thug? Has long dreadlocks, crazy teeth…let’s call him a thug. What has Lynch done that is really thug-like? Is someone offended that he grabbed his crotch area? You know his friends and family say he did that on purpose for the money to go to charity…but let’s say he was being an asshole…still not thug like.
You know what’s thug like? Some of the presidents that have been elected and some of their actions…

I hope everyone who hates all the quarterback changes will be genuinely happy if they’re wrong and it pays off on the field. Somehow, I’m not convinced some will be happy.

The trade for Wilson felt like a desperation move, like something the Browns would do to try to catapult themselves up the ranks over the last two or three decades. The trade for Fields has me feeling a bit less that way, especially if it was planned because I can at least see the method behind the madness. But no, I wasn't originally happen about it for the reason stated.
Will I be happy about it this year if they play well? No, not really. I fear we've set ourselves back on finding the next franchise QB. Will I be happy about it in two or three years if Fields turns out to be the franchise QB, or we draft a guy and that person turns out to be the franchise QB while we still are competing in the playoffs each year? Yes. Yes I will.

Re: Russell Wilson is now a Steeler
Can Russ make pre-snap reads? If he can we have improved already.
I know Russ can hand the ball off. I know Russ has pocket awareness. I know Russ can make all the throws.
Kenny wasn't going to beat Russ out for QB1 and he asked to be traded. I don't know that we trade for Fields if Kenny doesn't ask to be traded.
I do not care if the players are besties, hardly know each other outside the facility, or refuse to speak when off the field of play. So long as they put it down and work when they step between those white lines.
Some guys want to be friends with everyone. Some don't.

a lot comes down to who has the better career going forward; Kenny or Fields. If it’s fields that has the better career, great. The org still knows what it’s doing. But If we missed something on Kenny and he goes on to have a great (better) career that would be the worst. Then maybe we look back at the great era between 69 and 2018, and say was that really all Dan Rooney and are we now back to the old pre Dan - era of futility?

Wilson was a signing(1 year 1.2 millions) not a trade

It wasn't a trade. And unlike the Browns paying a guaranteed $250M, the Steelers paid $1.2M. I don't see a lot of similarities.

I agree with you. I don’t see us winning SBs with QBs that we didn’t draft. But I confess I am excited to see how the new QBs perform and I am glad we are not on the hook for a ton of money if they are not good.
I will root for both Russ and Justin.

Zero similarities. Browns paid high dollar for a dude playing 2/3 a season due to criminal activity. Steelers payed next to nothing for a guy being labeled prima Donna his last few years . He got along well with Pete Carrol for all I know. He and Payton didn’t mesh BFD. Tomlin may just be the kind of coach to bring out the best in these guys. Bottom line either of these QBs will contribute to twice as many TD’s that we got out of QB play last year. I just don’t see a down side. QB room much improved in 2024.
-
Re: Russell Wilson is now a Steeler
One thing for sure. There are zero character issues with Fields. Teammates, coaches and execs all speak highly of him as a leader.

I'm waiting to see his reaction when he has a couple of bad games and Tomlin, seeing his no-losing-season record in jeopardy, panics again and benches him for Fields.
