When you're evaluating anybody or anything, you can't just ignore all the bad stuff and only mention the good, you have to look at and include the whole picture. If you ignore or minimize all the bad things that a player, coach, or team do, then you can make a case that every player, coach, or team you are evaluating is great. This is what I was trying to illustrate when I brought up the Pirates. Other examples include saying "His incompletions and interceptions aside, Mitch Trubisky was a great quarterback", or "Their screwups and losing seasons aside, the Cleveland Browns of the last 25 years have been a great football team", or "Her husband's assassination aside, Mrs. Lincoln had a great time at the theater tonight".
