Everyone just looks at their injury list and shrugs. Mumbles, of course they are losing look at all the guys on IR. Start talking about coming back reinforced next season. No one seems to question the capabilities and positions of the head coaches.

Tomlin has the equivalent injuries happen almost every season for like the past 4 and mucks about, wins 9 games, makes the playoffs, and gets complaints for it. It is wild to me.

I think when they got rid of Rudolph and then pulled the plug on Pickett quickly that something different was up and they wanted to win now. The Steelers did more this offseason than any other in recent memory. They actually had a plan rather than mix a bunch of dirt in water and hope for the best.

The Steelers had a good game, so the Tomlin apologists are out in force. Who gives a damn about no playoff wins in seven years? This game makes up for it. :rolleyes:

It's just not that black and white when it comes to the Steelers and the coaches, and Tomlin more specifically. The team has had player deficiencies/lack of talent in certain spots over the last few years......most notably they have been treading water at QB, the Oline had to be rebuilt and fortified, and the secondary was lacking in talent for quite awhile outside of Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Speaking only for myself, I think it is always easy to vilify the head coach and blame him for all shortcomings. In Tomlin's case, he has managed to get more wins than losses over the last few years and done it despite some obvious gaps in player talent. It's fair to point out the team has 5 straight playoff game losses, but he also deserves credit for the things he has accomplished. I think his biggest coaching gaffe the last few years was having Randy Fichtner and Matt Canada serve as the offensive coordinator.

I think the decision to start Russ last night was bold. I think Tomlin knows the offense has to become more dynamic in the passing game and he wants to see if Russ can help that mission. Last night was a positive first step in that direction, and I think Tomlin deserves credit for making that call to switch QBs when Fields had done some good things for the team in the first 6 games.

With Wilson starting the Steelers are only a couple of players away from being a dominant Top 5 team if they are not there already. If they draw up some gadget plays and throw more to the TE they can go far this season.

This year's STs are probably the best in the last 30 years considering run back TDs are nearly impossible on kickoffs. The defense is not exactly circa-1976, but is excellent in 40 out of 60 minutes against a watered down NFL.

If the Steelers are destined to win another Super Bowl it is going to happen within the next 3 seasons.

The problem is that the people who make this argument act as if Tomlin had nothing to do with the roster or the assistant coaches, that he just showed up the first day of training camp each year and Rooney and the GM said to him "Hi Mike, this is the roster for this year, and these are the assistant coaches you'll be working with". The truth is that Tomlin has had major input in both of these areas since the day he was hired, and has either wanted or has signed off on every personnel decision or assistant coaching hire that was made during that time.

That's sometimes true, but it is also true that when a person likes someone it is also easy to make excuses for that someone's shortcomings and blame them on somebody else. So no matter how many players get sent away and assistant coaches get fired the problems remain and the record remains poor, because the person who was really the problem is still there.

Yes, it gives hope. But some people here are acting like this one good game and this one good half by Wilson proves something beyond a doubt when it actually doesn't. I want to see if Wilson can continue to do this, especially when we start playing the good teams at the end of the schedule. If this happens I will be very happy to jump on the Wilson bandwagon and give Tomlin credit for bringing him in, but I've got to see a lot more of him before I do so.

It wasn’t a playoff win so you can’t celebrate that. Tomlin almost lost that game by going rogue and starting Wilson!

It wasn’t until the Jets turned over on their own that the Steelers took the game over. If the Jets didn’t give up, they would have won…easily!!

The best part about that Patriots transition is it ended the "Belichick is a genius" talk. Belichick is a very average coach that cheated, his record without Brady is dismal and he's a fraud.

The only thing separating the Chiefs from the rest of the pack is Mahomes. A very good team with a generational talent at QB is not a "super team." That was my point.

And frankly, I thought and I continue to think that the Patriots "dynasty" was a joke. Playing against a division full of sad sacks year after year after year in a largely watered-down league all while pulling a bunch of bush league crap like deflating footballs and monkeying with their scoreboard and opposing teams' communication equipment during home games on top of it is simply not impressive in my book.

You say acting like we've won something and need to stop. We did win a game we were expected to lose. We were home dogs in that game. There are no participation trophies and I don't think anyone claimed a championship. But we looked like a real team Sunday night in all 3 phases for the first time this season. I call that a reason to get excited and to celebrate. It's only a game after all.

You don’t need to win games to get to the playoffs. There’s no such thing as accomplishing little goals to get to the big goal. [emoji38]

You simply don't respond to the argument made. I referred to the Super team era ( like the 70's ) because there were a number of teams that were head and shoulders above the rest. In the late 70's it was the Steelers, Cowboys and Raiders. We are in parity era, because other than the Chiefs, the rest of the league is a lot closer from top to bottom than ever before. You simply can't stay on top of the league anymore unless you have a generational quarterback. I'd say the Super team era started to wane as soon as free agency and the salary cap really took hold. The last hurrah was maybe the Cowboys and 49's in the 90's.

IMO a team that wins several championships within a brief period of time is indeed a "super team". And having a "generational talent at QB" doesn't disqualify a team from being a super team, it is often a big reason why a super team IS a super team. Using your logic, the 70's Steelers weren't a super team because they had Bradshaw, the 60's Packers weren't a super team because they had Bart Starr, and the 40's and 50's Browns weren't a super team because they had Otto Graham.

When you're evaluating anybody or anything, you can't just ignore all the bad stuff and only mention the good, you have to look at and include the whole picture. If you ignore or minimize all the bad things that a player, coach, or team do, then you can make a case that every player, coach, or team you are evaluating is great. This is what I was trying to illustrate when I brought up the Pirates. Other examples include saying "His incompletions and interceptions aside, Mitch Trubisky was a great quarterback", or "Their screwups and losing seasons aside, the Cleveland Browns of the last 25 years have been a great football team", or "Her husband's assassination aside, Mrs. Lincoln had a great time at the theater tonight".

Things that make me appreciate Mike Tomlin all the more:

The Colts entire Anthony Richardson debacle.
The Panthers -- well just everything there is terrible. But Tomlin got more out of Dionte Johnson than the Panthers did.
The Jets and Giants imploding in prime time.

I vote that he takes the Chiefs position. They're setup nicely for him, at least until he's 95.

Tomlin kept Antonio Brown under control for a pretty long time and got much more production out of him than Bruce Arians, Jon Gruden, Bill Belichick…all guys that have been mentioned as a replacement or “better” than Tomlin.

I think the team's philosophy turned this season into win now without mortgaging the future too much instead of ride average QBs into another marginal season. They traded for one decent developmental QB that was better than what they had and outright stole an elite one. This time Tomlin's personality was able to land them which created a competitive edge and so far got the most out of them. Fact.

This is not just about super bowl...Problem with Belichick,he had like 10 losing season in 13 season without Brady...Still a very good HC but his record without Brady was bad....For Tomlin,he had 8-9 QB with at least 2 starts in his career and everyone outside of Mitch Trubisky was .500 or better
