Smith needs a few more years in Pitt to win a Super Bowl and defend the title, then go back to head coaching if he wants. Why anybody wants all those headaches I don't know?
It hasn't been perfect with Arthur Smith by any means, but the Pittsburgh Steelers are miles ahead of their offenses from the last several seasons. Smith is a huge improvement over Matt Canada and Randy Fichtner before him...

i love Mike Tomlin and wish he stay the Steelers HC for years to come but him sticking with Canada and Fitchner for that many years must raise questions about his judgment.
maybe Mike T believed that consistency will yield success and wanted to be patient. That to me would be the only legit excuse to have had them for such a long time
Arthur Smith is starting to understand certain packages work better than others and uses them. He doesn't trot out the same plays and packages over and over again when they don't work. In other words, a good coach makes adjustments and we haven't had that on the offensive side of the ball in a long time. Now does he get under my skin with certain plays?? Of course he does but what I'm witnessing is a coach who understands personnel groupings and starts using it correctly and it helps having a QB who understands protections and adjusts them on the fly. All of these things are why we are seeing better offensive production.

Good point. He runs the personnel groupings like lines in ice hockey.
When the defense hands you the ball in their end of the field and you can’t even score, you can't be considered a good offense.
FIRE Arthur Smith!!!
Some of the plays that are being run are good plays but the personnel that is in is not the proper personnel. Harris is not an outside runner. He’s not a pitch guy. Cordarelle Patterson is not a swing pass guy…he doesn’t have the speed to do that. When Skoronek and Jefferson are in the game at the same time, it’s a90% chance of a run. Van Jefferson is not a motion slip into the flat guy…he’s not fast enough. These concepts aren’t hard to understand but Smith continues to try to crowbar these square pegs into round holes. The play design is there but the personnel isn’t able to execute it.
I'm hoping the personnel groupings were a result of injuries and availability otherwise we are regressing. I believe I bragged on him too soon about the seemingly better play calling/personnel groupings in recent weeks only to be absolutely terrible in that department today. I really wish they used the TE's more than what they are. Hell Ben made a living for years hitting Heath Miller. Those are usually mismatches that you exploit. Hell you have 6'7/8" TE, how many catches did he have today??

FIRE ARTHUR SMITH!!
Smith is not the best coordinator, hes a little too slow in understanding what the players can and cant do. We dont have a season or two for him to “figure things out”. That bing said, our receiver corp outside of pickens is not playoff caliber, maybe not even ok. Najee is limited, hes too slow, and the o line still goes through its ups and downs. And 36 yr old Russ cant make something out of nothing. He needs help
Smith is at least an NFL level OC…
That’s the thing, the way to beat the Eagles is to attack the weakest part of their defense which is the LBers…by far. Short, intermediate, middle of the field, quick passes. The exact game plan the Eagles were running against Pittsburgh is the game plan that should be run against the Eagles.
unfortunately that isn't Smiths MO.
Wilson broke new ground in his entire 14 year career when he did it against Cincy.
But watching the offense slam repeatedly into 5-6 man fronts was just infuriating.
Smith and Wilson should be embarrassed. It was all of both of their bad wuskities/habits on display at once.
11 offensive plays in the second half.
ELEVEN.
Yep. The Eagles are the current masters of bully ball. Running heavy personnel isn't the way to attack them. I think Smith should have spread the Eagles out and tried to get players the ball quickly in space.
I'm not going to turn on Smith after this game against probably the best roster in the NFL and missing his #1 WR and the defense without a starting safety and losing a starting CB in this game. The game fell exactly how it needed to for the Eagles with the gameplans the teams came into the game with.
Yes, they should have made some better adjustments, but if a couple calls by the refs go a different way and Najee doesn't fumble, that game probably goes to the final play. Now isn't the time to overreact to a loss against one of the best teams in the NFL. They are already in the playoffs, and they face the Ravens with the division title on the line. If they win, they are guaranteed a division championship and a home game in the playoffs.
Everything is still in front of them.
They definitely have their hands full if they don't have Pickens and TJ available to them. They are the two players that most often demand multiple players to stop them, which creates opportunities and makes life easier for everyone else on the offense and defense.
In a weird switch; they’re better positioned to TRY and absorb a short term Watt absence than they are a continuing Pickens absence.
Be nice if Roman Wilson wasn’t a total redshirt.
But Preston Smith has been doing some nice work. Both as a OLB and as a quasi DE. I wonder if they try and find a way to keep him for 2025?

Shhh! Be quiet. I’m slamming my head into this wall. It’s my happy place.

One trend I’ve noticed. After Smith has a bad game plan he usually hits a homer the next one. Can’t wait for Saturday and I’m really hoping Pickens plays.
