Tomlin never checked in.

Hey Tomlin, still waiting for all the “changes” you promised . . .
Tomlin will be HC through 2024 as his current contract says. I expect Canada will get another 1-year extension through 2024 as well. If not and Canada is let go, expect a promotion from within. Then it all gets a reset after the 2024 season.
Just my thoughts on it.
when you are not part of the solution then you have become part of the problem .....
The Steelers have played 44 games since December 13, 2020–including two playoff matchups–and they’ve fallen behind by at least two scores 25 times
I have been a staunch supporter of Tomlin and the way the Rooney's handle their coaches overall since the late 60's. It was clear when Nolls time was up and they got better with Cowher...until it was time for him to go and things were peachy for a few minutes with Tomlin. Now it is, again, time for change. There are grumblings that Rooney may step in. Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. I am tired of the same old mediocrity!!!
What if some of this isn't Tomlin's call? We, as fans, know less about how the Steelers organization works than many others because the Steelers just don't leak stuff the way most NFL teams do.
But what if ownership just says we aren't firing coaches. I doubt that is true, but we should at least acknowledge that it is possible.
Play that out in your mind and then listen to some of Tomlin's recent comments again....seem less "out there" if it is a HC stuck with an OC he doesn't want.
I agree with 86WARD who beat me to it.
If Tomlin is literally locked at the hip with Canada by Rooney and not allowed to make any decisions on his coaching staff, shame on Art Rooney II.
I find it hard to believe that Matt Canada would have been the selection as the OC without much input from Tomlin, so I tend to believe that Canada has been Tomlin's man the whole time. Tomlin also has his hands in keeping Pickett from audibling at the LOS. He dropped that little nugget in a way that only Tomlin can without coming out and saying it, but I believe it is most likely that Tomlin is right where he wanted to be all along, and he is there with the people he has wanted with him all along.
At least, that's my opinion. For all I know, Tomlin has now changed his mind and wants Canada gone, but Rooney won't pay two OCs so Canada stays until the contract is over. If so, it's a sad state of affairs that someone making that much money and making it largely because of the successes of the men that came before him would be so cheap and knowingly put out an inferior product to the fans that support the team so passionately. That would be a huge bummer.
I guess if tracking losing organizations it wouldn't be all that rare if you are say the pre 2023 Lions ....
but 25 out of 44 potential games is excessive if you are a winning organization if you cant rationalize that then I am not sure what I can do to help you see it ...
if you are behind in the score by 2 possessions 56% of the time its my guess you are losing a lot of football games ( and they are )
Mike Tomlin- Hell yeah there is gonna be change .....
Hey Mooth change underwear with Heyward that might fix something
as a head coach Job#1 is to assemble a quality staff and if part of that staff do not perform as expected and at an acceptable level then they are to make changes to get the level of play to an acceptable level ......
if you fail at Job#1 then your team fails
the saying he had 1 Job doesn't quite fit here but it holds enough water that you wouldn't die of thirst in the desert ... an NFL head coach delegates power to the heads or each side of the ball the Offense to the Offensive Coordinator and the Defense to the Defensive Coordinator they both come up with a game plan that the HC signs off on and they then delegate to their assistants the WR coach the RB coach the TE coach and the O-Line coach, the QB coach and the defense does the same thing with the secondary coach , the ILB coach the OLB coach the D-Line coach if anyone fails in the chain of command its up to the head coach to address it and make the necessary adjustments / changes to correct such issues in a timely manner ... we have been 3 seasons now and the only one that doesn't seem concerned is the guy who should be the most concerned ... that means he is to comfortable or just going through the motions if either is true he needs to go and I see no other explanation after 3 years
To Tomlins credit: we have seen him make excellent coaching decisions and make personnel moves on field to keep the team competitive when we all thought it would never be through injury and the like. He’s not a bad coach, he surrounds himself with dolts…maybe to make himself look like the smartest in the room?
Coaches/coaching is overrated by fans I suspect.
Many NFL coaches have and maintain their jobs on personal connections not performance or innovation.
Look at what’s going on in Denver. There are multiple coaches running that dumpster fire that are supposedly extremely highly regarded coaches with a track record of success. Currently they look like they shouldn’t be in charge of a lemonade stand much less an NFL team.
The Bengals DC gets a phenomenal amount of live around the league. One of his accolades was pulling a secondary together from spare parts. This season he doesn’t have Bates and Bell as his safety pairing and he doesn’t look so smart.
Flores is viewed as an excellent DC. He’s getting torched in Minnesota.
Daboll was the new hotness just last year. He’s presiding over a total disaster that seems to be growing by the day.
Eberflues is the kind of coach Steelers fans are conditioned to love. It’s not going well in Chicago. At all.
Staley and Moore should be a magical pairing for the Chargers but somehow it just isn’t all anyone hoped for.
The list can go on and on. Canada is awful. He should be fired but the rest of this nonsense? Take a breath count to ten and chill.
The Steelers are broken at QB, LT, C, CB, and SS. That’s a player issue. And the Steelers draft picks and FA signings demonstrate that they know they are. It’s going to take time.
The Steelers promoted Omar Khan to GM. Khan hired Andy Weidl as assistant GM. Together they promoted Dan Colbert, putting him in charge of the COLLEGE scouting. They hired Sheldon White as the PRO scouting leader. These are the guys in charge now.
Tomlin is under contract through the 2024 season, and I expect them to let that contract expire and make a HC change after the 2024 season. I don't know what kind of 'power' over personnel the HC will have moving forward, but I suspect Tomlin's has been diminished somewhat under this new regime. Not good or bad, just changed.
As is typical with hiring a new HC, the new HC will hire his new staff at that time. Therefore, I also expect Canada and Austin to be retained through the 2024 season as well.
Kenny will have finished his 3rd season as QB of the Steelers and we will see a new QB brought in as either a high draft pick or priority FA. At this time, I just don't see KP as the future franchise QB. I think KP can reach the Mayfield/Brissett level of pro QB, meaning he can be a starter but will always be looking over his shoulder for his replacement. Only my opinion.
All in all, I think this is who the Steelers are through the 2024 season. Then we will see wholesale changes with the coaching staff, probably some key personnel changes, and enter the 2025 season looking much different than now.
I have nothing more to base this post on other than what I already laid out, and just my own gut feeling. I welcome any thoughts.
Canada's contract ends after this season. Crazy thing that nobody has even mentioned (becauise it was under the radar) is that Canada was EXTENDED back on 2022. He was only originally signed thorugh 2022 which pisses me off more.
So, whoever has the final say in contracts for coaches is to blame. (Omar, Art III, Tomlin? Maybe all of the them made that decision? But who the hell knows.)
