They could keep KG ( if he proves worthy) as the big package FB for short yardage and just use Heyward any other time , that said we simply don't use the FB very often ... KG is pretty athletic for a big guy 4.89-40 , was known for his ability to pull as a guard in college ....if they can manage to find some semblance of value for the guy they spent a 3rd round pick on I am all for it AS LONG AS his play dictates worth ........

I mean I guess they could keep him as a back up OG and have a special FB package for him…but I’d much rather see a ball in the hands of Heyward than Green…

Multiple reports pretty said even Green thinks it was a spring practice gimmick.

I am thinking along the lines as a pure blocker ... going in the game as a listed FB but basically another lineman that doesnt have to be still on the line and get that 5 yard running start

Likely one of Green or Dotson “makes” the roster because draft status or some such nonsense.
Whichever of those mental midgets ends up on the 53 may as well bring something useful to the table.

Re: Quick Hits: Training Camp 2023
A whole lot of positives talk about Kendrick Green's play at fullback. Zach Gentry should be feeling the pressure if this continues into the preseason.
This is two days in a row KG is running over linebackers, and catching the ball. This is not bs'ing.

I’ll grant that’s it’s interesting and all that.
Buys reports are KG has pulled off his gimmick on guys that won’t be on a roster in a month.
If he’s still doing this in the 2nd or 3rd preseason game, then it might be something.

I'm sure there were many times when we all would have liked to punch KG in the face with a boxing glove.

If Green ends up making this team as FB after all the crap he has had to read and listen to from fans and media both, I may actually buy a jersey.

I know. Fans have been killing this kid.
He didn't pass up Creed Humphrey, the organization did. They took a swing and missed. He's been trying hard without good results.
I'm pulling for him.

Kendrick Green better ask for a lot fullback snaps. Center play was "yikes"

Green is maybe the biggest scouting misevaluation of the Colbert era.

Not a lot of surprises from that first preseason game, just confirmation. Pickett is good. Green is bad. Austin is fast.

I agree. If we stay healthy and the O line does a good job this team will put up points. I know we’re in a division with some high profile QBs so the potency of our offense is probably getting overlooked. We have real weapons on offense. And depth on both the pass catching and RB front.
And I really believe Kenny Pickett will turn out to be something special. Not saying he’s Joe Burrow, but he’s got some intangible qualities that might put him ahead of Jackson and Watson going forward.
But maybe that’s just wishful thinking.

Re: Quick Hits: Training Camp 2023
anyone else shocked at the speed of McFarland ? I mean this is what his 4th year here and its the first time I ever considered him fast

You could be right. I remember during the draft thread, everyone thought they were going to take Humphrey. Instead, they took Freiermuth. I thought there were still a couple centers that could be good players, but Green was never on my radar, or anybody's radar to be a priority pick. You could tell they really thought they landed a player they really wanted and they thought he was going to be a very good player. Big swing and a miss.
He literally looks like a guy that doesn't belong when he's at center. He looks like the guy that they signed off the street that was playing for the local semi-pro team.
That's not a personal attack against him. I like him and want him to succeed, but I think that it is obvious that he is never going to be great NFL center.

I think he is already ahead of Jackson as a QB because Jackson isnt really a QB in my eyes he is a RB who can throw a little bit , we will get a better idea this year of who Watson is now after a year in the system and some rust knocked off but it wasnt long ago Watson was one of the best in the league but damn near 2 years away from the game changes things most times

He always had that speed. It's the one thing that everyone knew about him was how fast he was, but when he played he always looked tentative, wouldn't make anyone miss, and would go down easily. He held himself back because a guy that doesn't have great power needs to use his other gifts to have a chance to shine.
You could see that he was running with more reckless abandon last night...in a good way. I loved the burst when the openings were there, but I was almost more impressed by a couple runs earlier where he only gained a yard or so, but got hit in the backfield and continued to spin, muscle, and drag his way for a short gain. The McFarland of the last couple years would have taken a 2-yard loss on plays like that. That's doing the dirty work that is necessary to play NFL football. He needs to continue to play that style and just go for it. If he does, he can be a threat when on the field.
-
Re: Quick Hits: Training Camp 2023
McFarland looked a lot faster and had more explosion than he has in the past…at least it appears that way.
I said in the game day thread as well, the offensive line play is still a little concerning and a Green playing center is as well.

Green should never take another snap at Center as long as he lives

the tentativeness always made him look slower perhaps would have been a better way of stating it ... he never looked fast everyone always said he was but he didnt look it ... last night he looked it

I never considered him at all. He's only rushed the ball 42 times in 3 seasons and only 6 times last season.

Re: Quick Hits: Training Camp 2023
So....about my ideas that fellow Badgers Herbig and Benton would not impact right away....yeah that might need some reevaluation.
Benton just never played with this consistent of an effort level and I am starting to think that was more about the toxic situation the program found itself in last year than Benton personally.
Herbig never had effort questions but I really didn't think he could hold up at the outside in the NFL. But....what if he doesn't have to and he just starts by a specialized role?
Anyway....why someone has not hired Leonhard to be their DC....I don't know. I think he is a "special advisor" somewhere like Illinois or some such total nonsense.

Now that Herbig has cemented himself as the darling of camp, it’s time to hop on that wagon. I’m not even talking about his play, I’m talking about his quote after the game.
“I feel like I was born to be a Steeler," Herbig said. "I’m supposed to be here, wearing that Black and Gold. I feel that Black and Gold running through my veins right now. It feels like exactly what God wanted for me."
Now that’s the hero we both need and deserve.

If he can do that, he will be able to hold up better playing EDGE and give him a better chance of holding up while taking on blocks because he will be bigger and stronger. If he can do that, I really like him going forward. He has a little bit of that feel that you got from Highsmith. He came in with some pass rush moves already in the arsenal, but he was a little light and needed to get stronger. He put in the work, and he is now turning into a monster. I hope Herbig can do the same.
