Re: Will the Coming Season be Different Because of COVID-19?
There's certainly no reason to be concerned about large gatherings:
Quote:
70 of 92 coronavirus cases in Massachusetts linked to Biogen employees after biotech firm's Boston meeting
(CNN) — Massachusetts'
coronavirus cases have more than doubled and the state's governor declared a state of emergency after employees who attended a company meeting in Boston last month tested positive for the virus.
The
state announced 51 new presumptive positive casesTuesday that are awaiting confirmation by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The surge brings the total numberof confirmed or presumptive positive cases in Massachusetts to 92.
Seventy of the cases are related to employees at Cambridge biotechnology company Biogen, state Health and Human Services Secretary Marylou Sudders said.

Re: Will the Coming Season be Different Because of COVID-19?
Th media is promoting panic. They do that job well.
But that’s different than taking aggressive and drastic actions to (yes, you can Slashy) limit its spread to more people.
I don’t see any of what’s being done (and what’s yet to come) as the slightest bit of overreaction.
We’re dealing with a virus for which we have no treatments ( we have effective antivirals for the other flus), and no vaccine (we have effective vaccines for other flus).
Both will be developed in time, but we’re still dealing with a lot of unknown.
When it comes to matters concerning national public health it’s always wise to overreact towards safety.

Re: Will the Coming Season be Different Because of COVID-19?
In May of 1968 my infantry company, about 80 of us, was operating Southwest of Da Nang. Late afternoon one day we got a report that an NVA regiment, 1500 soldiers, was moving in our direction. We quickly found an open area that would give us long, and wide, fields of fire. We all dug in. We had a helicopter bring out several .50 caliber machine-guns. Our battalion recon platoon was close by, so they joined us. Gunships at an LZ not too far away got ready.
Were we panicking? Of course not. We were getting ready. You folks who are poo pooing this should learn the difference between panic and preparation.

Assume this is as bad as the worst case models, then this lays out what the actual measures to stop the virus need to be.
Not the current half assed attempts being rolled out here.
Also, read past the obvious anti-Trump rantings and focus on if ANY of the measures taken in Taiwan were proactively implemented here.

"In order to be offended by someone, first you must value their opinion." Some asshole said that once, don't remember who it was, but clearly they must have spoken to you at some point.
What are the statistics.
China, ground zero, 1.1 billion people, 120,000 and change infected. 0.01%
Italy, the hardest-hit region in Europe. People are panicking and under forced lockdown. 60 million people, just shy of 6,000 infected. 0.01%
South Korea, hardest-hit in Asia outside of China. 50+ million people, 7,700 cases or so. 0.015%, yikes.
Massachusetts, ground zero for internet panic by idiot Patriot fans, and home to one of the biggest specific incidents. 7 million people, call it 100 cases. 0.012%.
All of USA. 330 million people, 1,100 cases. Hell, let's say it gets 10 times worse, 11,000 cases. 0.003%.
Seems like there's a pattern here. Maybe a couple hundredths of a percent is as bad as it's gonna get. One or two in ten thousand. Barring something completely insane, that's not ever turning into an epidemic.
So, are the statistics a moron, is that it?

There's a vast difference between bringing out weapons for a known enemy marching on you and buying the country out of toilet paper and masks (which does not help unless you're caring for someone who is infected) because you might get the equivalent of the seasonal flu with a 96-97 percent chance of survival. Oh, and that rate's higher if you have access to and decent quality health care, like all Americans do compared to many parts of the world.

This has nothing to do with people buying out toilet paper. We've been over all that. People buy supermarkets out of milk when they forcast a 1/2 foot snow here in New England. That's just how people are. This is about testing, quarantining, stoping the spread, shutting down the NBA, and so forth. The latter is the equivalent of bringing out the .50s, not the former.
Look people, this isn't brain surgery. Use your heads.

^'Zackly. There is a difference between preparation and panic. Right now, our society is engaging in an odd mix of complacency, preparation, and overreaction. They are all happening at the same time.
Quote:

I can't hang with you on this part, though. The quality of the health care system is irrelevant when it's overwhelmed. The important thing to remember is that *we* do not need to fear this. If you're well enough to talk about football in the off- season, you're well enough to contract this and get nothing worse than common cold symptoms.
This is not to say that we should ignore this as somebody else's problem, but rather that we should not allow fear to cloud our judgment. Just do what you've been told and you'll be fine.

China and South Korea are reporting that they have hit the inflection point, so really you can double those figures. There will be twice as many confirmed cases and deaths by the time it burns out.
Also keep in mind that the number of actual cases is grossly underreported since most people infected never got tested. The good news is this also means that the mortality from it is grossly overreported.
Also also... They and Italy have taken very extreme measures to slow the spread, measures that can't legally be taken here.
Nevertheless, we can expect roughly the same time line as them. About .02- .03% of the population confirmed cases, health care system overwhelmed, and similar social and economic dislocation. We're not more successful than these other countries, we're just earlier in the process.
All that being said... Yeah, the numbers won't wind up being very big when it's all said and done. Certainly not as bad as the seasonal flu we get every year.

Re: Will the Coming Season be Different Because of COVID-19?
This reminds me of a BBQ place near where I live. (steelreserve might know if the place, as well.)
In Flinn Springs, there is an establishment called the Grand Ole BBQ. For months, I had heard colleague after friend after acquaintance laud the amazing food at this establishment. “It’s not just the food, though; it’s the entire package: music, decor, and obviously the best BBQ ever!!!”
So, I go.
In short, to say that I was underwhelmed is being nice. It was decent food, wobbly tables, and the line for corn hole was a good 30 minutes. Furthermore, the parking lot was dirt, and the live music was a group of 40-somethings who used to be in a garage band (but now only play once per month at an open mic). One of the draws was hand-churned ice cream. Sweet!!! (literally) But, they were out of everything except vanilla.
I return to work, people inquire about my experience, and when I told them, they got offended: “What!?! You must have gone on an off night... because, that place is so good, it cures illnesses.”
My point:
I don’t get the appeal for Grand Ole BBQ... but, there must be something to it; otherwise, it makes no sense why everyone talk about how great it is.
Analogy:
I don’t get the hype for COVID-19... but, there must be something to it; otherwise, it makes no sense why everyone talk about how bad it is.

Not poo pooing it. Just see no need for the media creating hysteria over it to the point that it shuts down a booming economy. By all means, take precautions and try and be ready, but shutting down work places and dpleating stores of toilet paper is a bit of over kill.

Still don’t get the toilet paper thing. Pharmacies here are getting smarter now. They’re keeping all the hand sanitizer at the counter and allowing only two per shopper. Thing is, I think the hysteria will calm down in another week. My wife’s company is going to try a one day “ remote day” next week, just to see if it could work.

There is a certain type of person that finds satisfaction in living from crisis to crisis; from believing that the state of things is always miserable; from indefinite dread and feeling that the world hates us. They enjoy spreading that around to anyone who will listen, because it makes them feel like they belong, and above all it makes them feel right.
This self-deprecating alarmism is not dissimilar from the traditional "end is nigh, repent sinners" set that has been around for centuries, if not millennia. But we don't listen to that anymore, so the more fashionable equivalent these days is, "Humanity sucks, America sucks," and things along those lines. But the idea is the same: Dragging others down with them gives them a source of power and security, and fills them with delight. There is a reason why, for example, many say the "climate crisis" movement has taken on the form of a religious cult, and that's because it has. Same principle at work here, same type of people. They would've been the Flagellants in the 1300s during the plague, and done just as much good.
What's amplifying this even more are 1) the relaxed standards of professional journalism that now includes activism, and 2) that intermediate formats from blogs to social media have given a public voice to all of these people like they've never had before.
Previously, the most irresponsible sensationalism in the traditional media would've been stopped by an editor who said "We don't want to look like a tabloid, it's bad for business." Now that everybody's doing it, it's ok - and since journalism already tends to attract a lot of those emotionally unstable self-deprecating types like moths to a flame, everything's like a tabloid, which is to say dangerously irresponsible.
The other side of the coin is that social media has proven, above all else, to be the ideal conduit for groupthink. The aforementioned group of questionable people now have a perfect place to band together, and once they've done that, to shout down any opposition. Belonging, security, and power through an inflated sense of self-worth are what motivates them, and this offers all three. A "crisis" like this is beyond a wet dream. That is who is driving this, and by repeating it loudly enough and often enough, it has become convincing enough to draw ordinary people in to the panic.
I remember an exercise we did in grade school, which would probably never be allowed today. The first line on the sheet said "Read through the ENTIRE set of directions to the end before you start." Then steps 2 through 8 were to do ridiculous things like dancing and jumping around and standing on their heads and shouting embarrassing nonsense. Then step 9 was to find anyone who was NOT doing that, and do whatever it took to get them to join in. Then step 10 was to turn the page over, and on the back, step 11 was "Ignore steps 1 through 10, and sit quietly at your desk - then turn this back over and don't show it to anyone. Enjoy watching everyone else making fools of themselves!"
Well, at first about a third of the class was watching the other two-thirds hop around like fools. Then before long, it was just me and one other girl. Then they convinced her to join in too. Only when I told the guy next to me, "knock it off, you FAD!" did they finally leave me alone. (This being grade school, at the time we thought "fad" was another word for a gay person.)
Of course, the exercise was not about whether you passed or failed, but simply a demonstration of the power of groupthink and peer pressure. It has proven its value more times than I can count.

Once the panic reaches a critical mass, that determines what you must do as the head of a large organization, whether it is rational or not. Once the drumbeat is going and everyone else is moving in lockstep, there is more risk to you by being questioned for being the one who is not, than there is by simply going along. All you have shown is that the presidents of Harvard and MIT are also susceptible to the herd mentality, congratulations.
The NBA is the one that is different, because one of their actual players tested positive for the virus. Can't really play games that way. So they were kind of forced to do that for practical reasons.
Just wait and see how this all turns out, it will be over in a month or two and something like 20,000 or 30,000 people in the whole country will have been affected, and you will sort of quietly pretend like you weren't THAT wrong. In the meantime, I have no desire to join in with your bullshit.
