Has Justin Fields Been Given A Fair Shot?
Are there any teams out there showing they are “potential championship” teams? Maybe the Vikings. The rest of the league has been very pedestrian…
The league is wide open right now.

I agree. There are currently 16 other teams with better odds to win the SB than the Steelers, according to Bet MGM.com . Now we can disagree with a few of them, but still I dont see this current Steelers team as a Super Bowl contender with O line injuries, Limited WR group and questions at QB. Honestly, the D line to me is not as deep as we would hope, so a lot hinges on health to be anything more than a wildcard team.
So sure, take a shot with Wilson if you want to try and see what he has left in the tank. But I think if we look at progressing forward and getting better over the next couple of seasons, the best bet is continued development of Fields in the Arthur Smith offense. We will see.

We have been drafting OL and DL, I think we're getting closer. We draft a WR or 2 seems like every draft. I see us drafting a RB in 2025.
We could try to trade for established guys also. A lot has been put into the defense and other than depth everywhere it looks pretty solid. I still have no idea what we have on the offense going forward. We could enter next TC with all new QBs again.
What is the one thing this offense does well? what do we hang our hat on week in and week out? Throw to Pickens?

Re: Has Justin Fields Been Given A Fair Shot?
Any shot that this Russ taking 1st team reps is a opportunity for the steelers to say hey look he is healthy ... you need a QB give us a call ya never know ........
otherwise it just doesn't make much sense to me

I think we are good on O line with the young guys, as long as they get healthy. D line is really just Benton, while Leal and Lowdermilk look meh and Lee is just depth. IMO we need some real depth behind Cam going forward.
What do we hang our hat on each week you ask. I would have to say in a Art Smith offense, its running the ball and play action passing out of it. The patchwork O line isnt helping that right now, but I dont think its throwing 50-50 balls to Pickens.
I am honestly good with them playing Wilson at QB. My opinion is that he is on the downside of his career and skills, just like Ben was at age 36, so dont see him as the answer to challenging KC, Buffalo, Baltimore for the AFC title at this point. If he still had it, he would likely be in Denver or Seattle still.

I will say that the favorites currently to reach the SB in the AFC are, Chiefs, Bills, Ravens, and Texans. The Steelers are maybe in 5th place. But we lost to the Colts so maybe 6th? Let's see how we fare vs the Jets this week. All this to say, I don't put us in that AFC picture.

The odds going into each season are only 1 out of 32, or 0.3125%.

Re: Has Justin Fields Been Given A Fair Shot?
Bills, Chiefs, Texans and Ravens have all looked VERY pedestrian at times if not most of this season as well. There’s really not a “stand out” team as there has been in recent years.

I will push back against the Ravens a bit.
I think they looked pedestrian during the first 4 weeks of extended preseason. Of late, they look like a gosh dang juggernaut...at least on offense. They are still patching some leaks on defense....but who isn't?

Re: Has Justin Fields Been Given A Fair Shot?
I wouldn’t disagree. However, Ravens do what they do and the Steelers play them hard and then the Ravens bow out in the playoffs like they always do. Maybe this years different but those Steelers/Ravens games can go any way on any day no matter what records teams have.

That is certainly the precedent.
Right now, it looks to me like the Ravens are on target to break that precedent and blow the Steelers out of the water. If the Cowboys and Rico Doodle-Bug or whatever can run on the Steelers....WTF are the Ravens and Henry going to do?

I'm afraid that has the potential to be a full out butt whooping

Re: Has Justin Fields Been Given A Fair Shot?
We could probably get Jay Cutler for vet minimum if there is a problem.

Re: Has Justin Fields Been Given A Fair Shot?
Steelers are in win now mode to give Cam and Tj a shot in the post season while they can still play at a high level. Thats why Russ was brought in. They didn't like the idea of going into 2024 with just KP. Russ was always going to play unless Fields lit the world on fire. He hasn’t. He’s game managed and moved the offense as best he could with his legs and a few quick passes. It’s the Russ show now. Boom or bust. Tomlin’s gamble.
-
Re: Has Justin Fields Been Given A Fair Shot?
I will be shocked if Russ does anything good behind this O-line, I think that with Fields at least he can make something happen with his legs, Russ not so much. The coaches know way more than me though, we shall see.
-
Re: Has Justin Fields Been Given A Fair Shot?
The passing game sure better show up with no true number 1 or 2 based on the numbers .....
Fields has accounted for a large part of the results with his legs , those numbers have to be replaced by someone before we ever see any improvement you have to get back to your baseline first

Highsmith coming back should help. Losing Highsmith was quite reminiscent of what used to happen to the run D every time Aaron Smith went out for an extended period.

Yeah. I did not see the Raiders game and am on target to miss the Jets game as well....BUT the Colts and Cowboys just seemed to spam runs to "Not Watt's side" with great success.

Isn't there a 3.125% chance?
