What’s Wrong with TJ Watt?
I know the first thing that comes up is double teams. But he’s always been double teamed. And actually his double team rate is only 14% this season. Significantly less than Myles Garrett, who’s at 29%.
There’s a whole bunch of guys who have no business being ahead of TJ in the sack rankings. I know he still has impact elsewhere, but let’s get real, he’s getting paid to get to the quarterback. When I isolate on him watching the games, he seems rather ordinary. Something I haven’t seen before.
Are they just rushing 4 too much? Do they need to blitz more? Play him on the other side more, or send him up the middle?
What are your thoughts? I projected him to have 3-4 more years at 18-20 sacks per season. I’m not sure now.
Re: What’s Wrong with TJ Watt?
13.5 sack this time last year. He looked slow last Thursday but i couldn’t find any news about an injury, he's been a FP this week. He is 30…maybe its age related
Re: What’s Wrong with TJ Watt?
They need to shuffle him around more. And after a tough ravens game the legs were tired.
If you run hard on Sunday at a certain age it just takes time to be able to run a s hard again

Read “Ask and Answered” from yesterday. Labs had pretty good insight into this. They started moving TJ around just before Highsmith got hurt. Pretty sure when you are always double teamed, you’re going to get beat up.

Is 14% always?

Okay, I’ll back away from the “always” , how often does he get totally mugged by a RT, and not get a holding call. How often does he get chipped by an RB or TE. Really not sure who comes up with % stats. I still think he is one of the most disruptive OLB in the NFL.

His pass run win rate is not as good as others. This is the most important stat in all of statistics
Re: What’s Wrong with TJ Watt?
I do think he plays the run better than any pass rushers in the league. He seems to clearly know when he's not being blocked and slides behind the line. That's hard to measure?
I still think he's lacking some disruptive plays last week. But again when you play as hard as some of these guys do, it's hard to maintain on a short week

But all of those things have been true since his second year. He didn't start getting mugged this year. I still think he's a great player, as is. But I'm judging him based on his own other-worldly standard that he set. I was hoping that someone might have picked up on something that I'm missing.

The good news is that if he has 4 sacks Sunday, he'll be tied for the league lead!

They've started to move him around a little bit. I can't wait until Highsmith is back, so they can keep everyone fresh and start moving TJ around to create mismatches and confuse the protections. I'm sure it gets old facing double teams almost every play. Many times he is facing two offensive linemen, and occasionally another player chipping. Three guys paying to attention to one player creates opportunities for everyone else. A little more consistent interior pressure will help as well.
It was good to see him get some sacks and create a turnover today.
