Re: Russell Wilson sets Steelers franchise record during Pittsburgh's win over the Jets
Fun fact: Earl Morrall was the Steelers QB during my first season following the Steelers.
The next year Buddy Parker replaced this young, promising QB with a past-his-prime veteran QB who had previously won NFL championships (Bobby Layne). For what it's worth, the young promising QB that the Steelers got rid of went on to play in two Super Bowls, while the past-his-prime veteran QB won nothing with the Steelers.

Did he win those 2 super bowls? Can't just leave us hanging like that.

He lost super bowl III to Namath and the Jets but won the super bowl V with Baltimore, more of a grind it out performance and team win (16-13). I don't blame the steelers back then for rolling the dice on a former champion (Layne). Morall was 6-6 with the steelers, 11-12 TD to int ratio. Not great. He just went to a loaded Colts team with a rising young defensive coordinator (Noll). Very similar to what were doing now with Wilson, rolling the dice hoping he can jump start the team.

Didn’t Morrall get replaced by the injured starter for multiple SBs?

Still the right decision to go with Wilson.

he was replaced by Griese for super bowl VII and was on the bench for VIII. Even if they kept him, Morall was never going to save the steelers in the 60’s. Only Noll and his complete overhaul could do that

Dawson and Unitas is where they missed it, not Morall.

He lost the first one he was in but won the second. It's in the original article that hawaiiansteeler posted.

They missed it with all three. The Steelers back then had a history of giving up on young QB's, which didn't work out for them very well. And now history is repeating itself.

Anyway…Russell Wilson played well…

Most passing yards in his Steelers debut. That's sort of one of those 'baseball stats', but still a cool record to own.

I forget what Ben had in his debut but I’m pretty sure that was under a hundred. Who did Wilson “dethrone”?

Earl Morrall is a legend in Miami. He carried the 1972 team while Griese was injured. He was as much a factor on the Perfect Team as any other player.

Then he went right back to the bench.
