QB Russell Wilson Getting First Team Reps
Reports saying Wilson was getting first team reps practice today…
-
Re: QB Russell Wilson Getting First Team Reps
The Steelers have to keep Russell Wilson happy, he was brought in to be QB1 so giving him some 1st team reps is necessary. You've gotta think that the Steelers realize that 140 yards passing per game isn't going to win in the 2nd half of the season so why not give work to a QB who is head and shoulders above Fields in the passing aspect. Fields has gotten lucky in these 1st few weeks, fumbling a number of times and having the Steelers recover and a few passes that should have been picked. This should come as no surprise.

Re: QB Russell Wilson Getting First Team Reps
yup, looks like Russ will cook this week.

Re: QB Russell Wilson Getting First Team Reps
Heard that in the car over the radio. I’m skeptical about this move. I think it could backfire.

They don’t have to keep Wilson happy. He’s making $1M on a one year contract. Lol

Re: QB Russell Wilson Getting First Team Reps
If he does start, it’s a bad move IMO. Either way, I think an ugly loss is coming.

Re: QB Russell Wilson Getting First Team Reps
If we look at this rationally, none of us has any input or impact on who gets the start at QB. So I am just going to watch what happens and enjoy how it plays out.
If Wilson gets the start and plays well, then good. If he gets sacked a lot and the offense fails to move the sticks, then the L is on the coaching staff for the change. Mike T probably promised Russ the #1 job to get him to the burgh, so trying to follow thru on his promise.

I know each game is its own individual blip. But have you seen Russell Wilson's stats vs the Jets?

That is an accurate assessment.
While I realize I have no way of really knowing this....all of my money is on the negative scenario you have laid out. I suspect everyone involved takes a big L on this one.
With that being said...I get it. They owe it to themselves and the rest of the roster to make sure that Wilson isn't the missing piece.

Re: QB Russell Wilson Getting First Team Reps
We should hope Wilson plays well. He’s our only realistic shot of making some noise in the playoffs. If he doesn’t you can throw Fields or Allen jr out there and play out the season and plan for the future.

The funny thing is, I thought that was the plan all along this season. Push it as far as we can with all these rookies and new OC with no real expectation of actual success.

No I havent seen his stats. Are they career stats or recently ?
I seem to remember another recent Steelers QB who had a great record vs the Bengals, but lost 41-10 to the Bengals back in 2021. Father Time is undefeated.

Career stats. He's only played them 4 times. 3 with the Seahawks and once with the Broncos.

So the Stats from 2023 matchup look good for Wilson, but the actual game turned out to be a loss as the Broncos, as the first 5 drives of the 2nd half netted -18 yards. Then a sack-fumble in the 4th quarter appeared to seal the victory for the Jets.
Lets Ride!

I think the plan was a playoff run with Wilson as Qb. How many rookies do we have as starters? Frazier? Roman Wilson who hasn't even played? The defense and relatively easy schedule has been playing in our favor. Fields has been ok, he was holding down the fort so to speak, sounds like thats what the coaches thought too. But i think its clear they want more than a first round playoff exit.

3 OL are rookies, 3 in their 2nd year. 1 rookie WR and 2 in their 2nd/3rd year. 3 new QBs and a new OC. But did I really have to spell out what I was talking about?
Justin Fields was definitely brought in as an experiment from the Bears. Russ was not brought in to be the future. Neither was Kyle Allen.
The offense is not designed to win playoff games this season. The defense on the other hand, the starting 11 on that side of the ball look like they are ready to make a deep push.

i disagree about the offense. Frazier was supposed to be the missing link on the line. We’ve had injuries, we were set at Running back, with Wilson to be the upgrade at Qb. Only question mark was receiver where they tried to get a FA but were hopeful that Wilson could do well as a no 2. I believe they really thought the team could go past the first round going into the season. Looks like they’re still of that mindset. If the line gels and Wilson plays well we should do well down the stretch and into the playoffs

I think we can make the playoffs this season with Russ or Justin. I just don't think we make a playoff push. I don't think the FO and coaches honestly thought that is/was the ultimate goal. Other than it being the ultimate goal every season for every team.

Re: QB Russell Wilson Getting First Team Reps
As the cliche goes, when you have two quarterbacks, you don't have a quarterback.

Take away the rushing and give Fields one more completion....and the stat line is really similar.
So take EXACTLY how Fields looked against the Raiders. Remove the rushing and change those to passing TDs.
How enthusiastic is everyone about that QB? I figure it is fine. Kinda like how Fields has been fine.

Re: QB Russell Wilson Getting First Team Reps
They're 4-2 and tied for first. It's the perfect time to blow things up!!! I just want to know which one of them is going to play like Mahomes.

QB Russell Wilson Getting First Team Reps
So much for the “hot hand”?

Re: QB Russell Wilson Getting First Team Reps
Start Wilson and put Fields in as SLASH!
-
Re: QB Russell Wilson Getting First Team Reps
It kinda makes sense to do it now. You get one game to shake off the rust against the Jets. Then you get a game against the Giants to try and put it together.
Then the team gets the bye week to figure out where it wants to go for the stretch run.
I guess it could work out. Sure, why not?
-
Re: QB Russell Wilson Getting First Team Reps
Jets and Giants aren’t bad teams by any means. Definitely not pushovers.
-
Re: QB Russell Wilson Getting First Team Reps
I don't see that there's an ugly loss coming, and I don't see that the only reason Wilson is starting is because they promised him the starting job. They are starting him because they think he is the better QB. There is no chance the Steelers think this is a rebuilding year. The Steelers always think they will make a playoff push. We have to find out what we have with Wilson. If he sucks, then we can always go back to Fields.
