12 Team Football Playoff
I am extremely curious how this year's selections will be made beyond the obvious conference winners. All conference presidents will be pounding the table and lobbying for their schools. But since they don't all play the same schedule, who will deserve the higher ranking? How on the level will these rankings actually be?
Group of 5 is easy. Be the highest ranked among Go5 and you're in.

Re: 12 Team Football Playoff
Found out a bit earlier today that a kid I got to coach as a youth is getting the start tonight at Center for MissState vs UT. I also had the privilege of having him and his brother in Sunday school and in the Wednesday night youth class at church. His grandmother texted my wife to let us know since she knew we would be very excited for him.
That is all. Proud of this hard working kid.

Re: 12 Team Football Playoff
So, if Army beats Navy, Notre Dame and goes undefeated, do they make the playoffs? Granted, that's a tall order. Still, would be great.

If they go undefeated with a top 10 win? I would vote to put them in. Define earning it. Power 5 programs will get in with 2-3 losses. I keep hearing the talk, it shouldn't be about the helmet but about earning a spot in the playoff. It's still about the helmet.

I agree. I think eventually we will see it go to 16 teams which will help some of the non-power conference teams.

Re: 12 Team Football Playoff
A couple weeks left. Who are your 12?
Oregon
OSU
Texas
Tennessee
BYU
Notre Dame
Indiana
Boise State
Miami
SMU
Army
Georgia
1st team out
Bama
-
Re: 12 Team Football Playoff
I’m taking Georgia out and putting Bama in. Also taking Army out (unless Boise loses tonight) and probably bumping Ole Miss in.

You don't think Penn State will make it? They are winning big and likely to move up this week with losses above them.

Curious how you leave Penn State out?

Re: 12 Team Football Playoff
I'd love to see Army make it but beating both Notre Dame and your rival? I don't think is going to happen.
I'm sure the order will change.
Oregon
Osu
Texas
Penn state
Tennesse
Byu
Notre Dame
Indiana
Boise State
Miami
Georgia
Alabama
I'm rooting for SMU to make it but Im assuming they will lose the ACC championship game which will knock them out. Tennessee and Georgia play each other. If Tennessee wins that should knock Georgia out and you have to look to Clemson, Texas A&M or maybe SMU

Re: 12 Team Football Playoff
PSU has zero top 25 wins. Bama beat Georgia who beat Texas. Tennessee can knock Georgia out of the picture next week. ND can knock Army out next week. If one of these happens I move Bama in. If both lose, I would put in Ole Miss. If Ole Miss had not lost to KY they would be in after today's win, but before today they had zero top25 wins.

Re: 12 Team Football Playoff
Maybe Montana State should make it. 10-0

If one of those 10 is over a top 25, absolutely.

I'm sure it's not.
I'm not a Penn State fan really. I grew up a Pitt fan. However, if you end up with one loss overall and one loss in the second-best power conference you are making the playoff field regardless.

Penn State beat Illinois and they are ranked. I’m not sure Indiana beat a top 25 team? Penn State lost to the number 2 team in the country and that’s their only loss.
As much as Penn State chokes in the big games, they still will get a spot in the 12.

Illinois is not 12. Not in the top25. PSU was ranked higher AND playing at home when they lost that OSU game. There will be some shuffling in the next couple weeks, PSU can still make MY rankings. They just aren't in there this week. For the reasons I stated.
The Tennessee/Georgia game is kinda big to me. If Georgia loses they are out. If Georgia beats Tennessee, that shuffles things up even more. In MY rankings that would push Ole Miss out. Tennessee still has a win over Bama on their resumé, but would be on the verge of elimination. Georgia would be the only 2 win team in due to a top5 AND a top10 win if they beat UT.
Indiana plays at OSU next week also. Indiana needs to win that game. OSU has a top5 win, and a top5 loss. A top10 win/loss here I think they are still in. Bigger game for Indiana. Who gets in Indiana or PSU if both have one top 5 game on their resumé, and both lose that game? Does it go to margin of loss? Or are both out due to 1 true test and both failed? IDK
Bottom line is this is for making YOUR picks with YOUR reasons. The selection committee has already decided, I think. I don't think they even watch the games. No way will they put Army in even if undefeated. Really need to put an end to the pre-season rankings. They completely shift things before there has even been a snap of the ball. I would put out MY first rankings at the halfway point and not before.

Re: 12 Team Football Playoff
Illinois was ranked 20 and fell to 24. Possibly fell out this past week but they’ve been ranked.

PSU should win next 3 and get in for sure. If they lose one of the three when heavily favored who knows. They control their own destiny.

Pretty sure USC was ranked as well when the beat them. Allar looked good that game. I missed OSU game but read he sucked. He could be good gamble if is available in rounds 2 or 3.

Going to be hard to keep Army out if they beat two ranked teams and one of them is Notre Dame. Don't think we will find out because it is doubtful they will pull it off.
Just a thought I had and wonder what the rest of you think. I think the conference championship games are not only useless now but detrimental to the conferences. First of all, the divisions are all gone in the power conferences. Particularly in the SEC and Big 10, all you are doing is making your top team (who will almost always be a top 5 team) play an unnecessary game that exposes your team to in jury and a lower seeding. Secondly, some years it's going to be exposing one of the teams to getting knocked out of the playoff. I know there is still a pride issue. Imagine how Oregen, SMU, BYU and Texas will feel if the win their championship games given that they are new to their respective leagues. However, this will pass with time. There is also money in the TV rights, but they could make some of that up by just going with 16 teams in the playoffs.

Re: 12 Team Football Playoff
I don't like the pre-season rankings and therefore do not use them this late in the season. I think those are biased and not based on actual play but completely on the logo on the helmet.
As an example... teams can boast they beat a top 10 Missouri team and that should get them credit. That Missouri team is not that good and never should have been ranked in the top 25 is the on the field reality. I don't credit what a team was ranked when they played. I use a whole picture approach.

Re: 12 Team Football Playoff
Notre Dame is going to crush Army, like they did Navy.

Maybe. Navy had 6 turnovers in that game. 5 of those were fumbles. I don't think Army has that many turnovers. Might be a closer game than Navy was.

Re: 12 Team Football Playoff
Things getting cleared up some (a little). Clearly Army's long shot hopes disappeared under the watchful eye of touchdown Jesus.
I see Alabama is still 13th in the coach's poll. If they make the playoffs, it's a scam. No team losing 3 games should make the playoffs. I wouldn't care if all three are against top 10 teams. There is a concept of taking care of business, if you are a great team. And, if you don't take care of "bidness" to the sum of 3 loss you don't belong in a 12-team playoff. I realize technically you could win a power conference championship with 3 losses and get the automatic qualifier. However, winning your conference is kind of the definition of taking care of business.

Not every conference champion will get that same consideration. Even if undefeated or only one loss.

This has changed a little. I can't justify letting in a 3-loss team.

First team out BYU? Maybe Tulane is they beat Army and win the AAC. Gonna be fun.

Re: 12 Team Football Playoff
Looks like Arizona State is the lead candidate to get in over Army.

Yeah there's no way Army gets in. ASU controls their own destiny at this point.
