Jaylen Warren reveals Steelers wild potential plan to use Justin Fields as kickoff returner

During an appearance on Cam Heyward's podcast, fellow Steelers teammate Jaylen Warren revealed that Pittsburgh special teams coordinator Danny Smith has mulled the idea of making quarterback Justin Fields a potential returner.

"I would, I think it's pretty cool. As soon as you touch the ball that's when everything starts to happen," Warren said of the rule change and whether or not he'd want to take part in the return game. "Our special teams coordinator was talking about Justin Fields being back there. ... We looked at him like, 'Justin Fields is about to be back there?'"

I’m sure Danny Smith was busting balls…although Fields may be one of the fastest on the team.

Now if he becomes the QB he can blame himself if the drive doesn't start in good field position. :chuckle:

At this point, with the new rules in place on KO, Special Teams Coordinators across the league will be looking for new ways to outperform the competition. So maybe having a QB back there to throw a cross field lateral pass to another returner, with blocking setup is an option. I just dont think that putting your backup QB there is a good long term idea, but again they are probably just exploring whatever they can.

I dont know if the 2-man wedge rule is in effect still on returns now that the runup isnt as far. But I think some different blocking packages such as a wall off and kick out (pull or trap block) to create a lane will be something that could be effective.

The more Inghjnn about it, the more it makes a ton of sense to put Fields at a kick returner. No other team has that sort of option and it could be ground breaking with what they can do with his arm and speed back there. You would have two tremendous athletes returning kicks.

Foles' only regret is that he couldn't suggest using Fields as the wedge buster on kickoff coverage. They outlawed that wedge formation, so nobody has to crash into multiple large dudes to attempt to break it up anymore.

Foles is very sad over that rule change.

I think the Chiefs will go with Justin Reid to handle their kickoffs now. That’s going to give them a full man advantage on kick coverage…as opposed to just having a normal kicker do it. Why wouldn’t they???
