Mason Rudolph the new Starting QB
like it or not , right or wrong the team responds to him and he is playing well ...
no way you can justify IMO any other option
with 9 min left in this game he has 2 starts and the 2 highest scoring performances of the season as a team
-
Re: Mason Rudolph the new Starting QB
Agreed. Can't go back to Kenny now. Rudolph is playing very well.

For sure gotta stay with the hot hand.

Re: Mason Rudolph the new Starting QB
There’s no doubt he’s earned it. No way you can disrupt this momentum.

I don't think they intend to. This team is starting to find out what it has.

Re: Mason Rudolph the new Starting QB
He's not afraid to throw it. Protect him and he can produce.

Rudolph earned it. Start him for Baltimore.

Re: Mason Rudolph the new Starting QB
Good for him, just which we never had Trubisky and we would already have punched our ticket!
-
Re: Mason Rudolph the new Starting QB
Yeah, boom or bust with Rudy to the end of the season, which hopefully goes into the postseason

Stupid decision by Tomlin

Not Tomlins best move but he did correct it…I guess…

Re: Mason Rudolph the new Starting QB
If Tomlin would have listened to the voices on this forum MR would have been an X-steeler years ago. :chuckle:

Re: Mason Rudolph the new Starting QB
Just remember! Coaches always know best because they see the players in practice!
-
Re: Mason Rudolph the new Starting QB
I literally got kicked off the steelernation message board because I said Mason was the best Quarterback of the three.

Re: Mason Rudolph the new Starting QB
I get why. But this is dumb unless they are going to move on from Pickett for next year.
These continual misguided attempts to compete rather than develop is just a waste of time.
Trubisky as a bridge.
Rudolph to helm a one and done playoff run.
Equally useless and waste of time.
This is all the exact opposite of how you develop a qb.

And Bill Cowher would have been fired for failing to advance past the AFC Championship Game. Russ Grimm would have been hired as the new head coach. Willie Parker would have been benched because his long runs shouldn't count long before his Superbowl TD....ect....ect...ect.

Re: Mason Rudolph the new Starting QB
We have a good excuse for playing Mason over Pickett the rest of this season Let him heal while we see what Mason can do. He deserves a chance to get more tape out there for other teams as well.
Kenny really needs to do some soul searching this offseason. Is he the future or a QB who will always give the backup chances to steal the gig because he is made of glass.
Injuries happen but the Texans and AZ injuries were 100% Kenny’s fault for running into sacks and tackles when he had a chance to throw it away or throw a TD to a wide open Austin.

The "throw to Austin" is easier said than done. Basically you want a QB that will play in fear of getting injured?

Pickett is shell shocked and doesn't even notice he is open so the point is moot.

Re: Mason Rudolph the new Starting QB
As soon as MR shits a game up, fans will be calling for KP again...

I think it would take at least two games. However there might not be two games left and we wouldn't know that scenerio. If it was an upper level Qb in wait I would tend to agree with you.

Re: Mason Rudolph the new Starting QB
Mason does two things well. He doesn't throw picks. And he is accurate on long throws. Those two things are particularly relevant to the way the present team is constructed.
We have a good power running game. So, his accuracy throwing deep keeps teams from bringing a safety up to help stop the run. And not throwing ints is always important, of course. However, on a team that wins most of its games by one score it takes on added importance. Interestingly enough, before Kenny started falling off this year, he was doing both of those things relatively well. Although, Mason is more accurate with the long ball.
What will be interesting to see is what Mason looks like if a team takes away the run game and is able to get pressure without blitzing. Will he be able to continue playing well? Although Kenny hasn't played well, his game is probably more suited for that situation. Time will tell, of course.

Re: Mason Rudolph the new Starting QB
sorry I don't see fans up in arms over this and I dont think they chant for Kenny unless mason throws 3 picks or something (and that could happen)
Kenny simply hasnt done ANYTHING to get fans excited , this isnt 1968 where 150-180 yards passing is a great week ... multi TD games naa we arent seeing that either , does he run for a buck 20 and thrown for a buck 80 nope not doing that either ..... what does he do well other than take care of the football ??? I will wait
KP plays like that backup you really hope doesnt get in the game , it just so happens Mitch plays worse ... Mason has given us some hope but he isnt under contract for next year so oooooo
-
Re: Mason Rudolph the new Starting QB
He should start next week again. Go with what is working for sure.
I still dont know if he is in B&G next year, but it really doesnt matter.

It appears Kenny's play has been geared toward maintenance/no turnover. The question is,after this much time ,why is that? It makes you think that they are seeing things with him that dictates that.

I would completely agree with you except for two things. First, Mason is on a hot streak. You want to see how well he does and put more on tape. Second, there's no way someone is at full health on a surgically repaired ankle in what, four, five weeks? Think about how long sprains take to heal naturally. They had to cut into him to reattach things or to sew things together. I can imagine him pushing to get back, but the safer bet is to not play him until needed.
Now, there's a further element to this as well. If Mason keeps playing as well as he has, we have a decision to make. Do we keep him as a backup or do we trade him (because he will be worth draft picks at that point). Maybe we get a fourth round pick for him, perhaps even a third. That is a decent amount of capital that we might get for being careful with Kenny's return.

I read the surgery was to get back earlier not as a necessary procedure. Did it before and came back in about a month. Pickett says he’s healthy and ready to go.
This is going to turn out badly in the long run.
I’ve got the same knee-jerk negative reaction to this that I had to the news they signed Trubisky as a bridge.
I could be way off base but this is not how teams that are committed and confident in their QB proceed.
This is how teams that do not have a plan or solution to the QB position proceed. And it rarely, if ever, works out well.

When you are fighting for a playoff spot, you go with the hot hand. 30+pts 2 weeks in a row would be the hot hand. You don't make a change here. What ifs be damned.
