Steelers' WR George Pickens' 5-Word Reactio to Kenny Pickett's Perfect TD Pass in Preseason Win

Kenny Pickett ended the Pittsburgh Steelers’ first drive of the preseason opener by connecting with George Pickens for a 33-yard touchdown pass. It was a perfect pass from Pickett, who fired a bullet 20 yards in the air, hitting George Pickens in stride. The Steelers receiver broke one tackle and shook off another defender, taking it 21 yards to the end zone.

The Steelers defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 27-17 in Friday’s Week 1 preseason. Pickens didn’t seem at all surprised that Pickett played so well.

“That’s what he’s been doing,” Pickens said of Pickett’s touchdown pass, via Alan Saunders of SteelersNow.

Pickett was nearly perfect against the Buccaneers. He completed six of his seven passes for 70 yards and a touchdown. The quarterback’s 147.9 passer rating came against a defense largely comprised of backups.

So far Pickett is backing up my request to draft him. My biggest concern is still his arm strength downfield, especially in windy bad winter conditions.

His arm isn't Josh Allen but honestly he doesn't have a weak arm. In his college highlights he's got passes that went for 50 air yards, that's enough to hit anywhere on the field.

I still think he has more than enough arm strength. I really like how he is humble and always working. Winning is important to him, and he works his ass off to make that happen. I love the kid. He has a long way to go, but I think he is going to be very good.

he has bulked up or so it seems and that should help aid the arm strength a bit as long as he didn't bulk to the point of hindering his shoulder motion or his waist flex and I do not believe he did

He definitely got stronger and added some good weight to his body. And as long as he doesn't hulk out to the point it affects his throwing motion and he doesn't lose flexibility, he'll be fine.

I also think his arm looks a little stronger and more lively. When he squares up, he is really driving the ball from what I am seeing. There are ways to work on improving your arm strength, but I'm assuming he has been doing some of that his entire life. Just being one year removed from throwing the ball all over the stadium at Pitt, then preparing for the draft and working with QB coaches, then getting drafted and working with quarterback coaches, plus working with the team at mini camp and then training camp. He literally didn't get a break. His arm was probably a little tired last season from the non-stop action. I bet it feels fresh and strong this season because he actually had an offseason and got to rest his arm a little bit. He's probably in a better place now with how his arm feels.

I can not remember where I read it, but there was just a rally interesting article about how data and science has (finally) come to playing QB - like the actual throwing of the football.

Article talked about how even now, guys hit the pros with no two coaches agreeing on the fundamental mechanics of throwing a football.

Now, there are guys with science and proven case studies (I think Hurts and Allen are among them) of understanding that throwing “power” comes from your footwork and rotation/torque through your core.

Kinda like how over the last decade, baseball figured out how pitching was actually working and now it’s all spin rate and triple digit heaters.

Guys are going to start to be taught how to throw the ever loving heck out of the football. Now accuracy and timing? That might still be uncharted.

its a lot like hitting a baseball hard without "swinging hard" its the "stroke" a combination of smooth swing and hip rotation while stepping into the pitch ..was taught that in little league by the greatest little league coach I have ever had the pleasure of meeting (RIP Fred Curry) ...

I say he was the greatest coach because we never lost a game in my 3 years of playing on his team and he only lost 3 games in a 10 year span with kids from a village of 700 total population playing vs teams from towns of 10k to 50k population ..I would say coaching had a lot to do with it that said I am getting way off topic here ( might have something to do with the home made peach cobbler moonshine I am currently consuming) https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F3h5ze9X...jpg&name=small

Pickett's arm strength is enough. I remember those lasers he threw late last season when we needed him the most. If anything, not having a gun works to KP's advantage because that means he won't take unnecessary risks and turn the ball over. We love the Big Bens, Brett Favres, and Josh Allens, but they turn the ball over a lot.

Are Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady known for their arm strength and that is where they derived their lifetime of success?

Brady had a below average arm when he came out of college. It was a major concern along with a lack of athleticism and poor body structure that was one of the reasons he dropped so far in the draft. Brady somehow managed to have a stronger arm at 45 than he did when he was 23. He worked on his body and he worked on his mechanics to maximize his ability to throw with power. He wasn't born with a rocket arm, but he did have a good enough arm to threaten the entire field because of his incredible mechanics.

Aaron Rodgers has great arm strength. Rodgers is considered to maybe have the best arm talent of any quarterback ever. His combination of arm strength and accuracy are legendary. He can "spin it" like nobody has seen before. The guy I compare him to is Dan Marino. Those two guys could just roll out of bed and effortlessly throw it all over the yard and in places others don't dare. They are maybe the two best natural throwers I have ever seen play.

You beat me to it. I was just going to post that Rodgers has one of the greatest arms to ever put on cleats and try and play the QB position. From about 2010-2018 is "peak" Rodgers. And he was doing things that were hard to believe.

As for Brady....I think one of the biggest reasons the retirement sticks (this time) is that he knows he can't continue to use footwork and mechanics to get the ball to all the places he needs it to go. Nothing against him, he is in his middle 40's and all that stuff starts to go - let alone after how many decades of high level competition?

Kordell did have a very strong arm.

It would be great to see Kordell come into the league now that they NFL has embraced the mobile quarterbacks. Kordell was used as Slash, and he was terrific in that role, but you always wonder what could have been if he wasn't pigeonholed into playing QB a certain way and his full potential was achieved by playing to his strengths more and hiding his weaknesses.

Something I wonder about as well. Additionally, Stewart would have been coached and developed differently going back to high school if he was coming up now as opposed to his day. He's at least Lamar Jackson rookie year good when he hits the league if he were drafted tomorrow. I really believe that.

On the flip side, Mason Rudolph is a QB who would benefit from travelling back to the 90's. Rudolph is a perfect Cowher/Schottenheimer Quarterback.

I don't think Kordell was ever going to be a great QB.

I think he could have had more success if they didn't try to make him into something he wasnt ... had they tailored a scheme to work towards his strengths instead of trying to make him play within a system that did not highlight what he was good at ....


he would have been perfect in a 1 read and run system , he just didnt see the field well enough to be a pocket passer and he didnt process well enough

oh hell no. just the opposite. he lost them SB appearance opportunity. he was a big game choke just like lamar jackson. save the worst for when it counts the most. kordells arm was just to erratic. i wish there was a stat lept for how many times a QB threw the ball in the dirt in front of an open receiver.

most teams don't win superbowls with any given starter so there is nothing revolutionary there ... the question you have to answer is would he have been better and if so how much better because we did manage to get to the AFC championship game with him playing in a system that didnt fit his skillset ...

Its a question we will never have a definitive answer to but it is one worth pondering
