how are the "other" rookies doing ?
we are a few meaningless weeks into preseason , but after months of debate/arguing over which QB the steelers should take , we might as well do some meaningless comparisons. personally i didnt want any of the QB's in the 1st round. didnt think any of them were worthy of a 1st. i shuddered at the thought of them using a 1st on Willis in particularly. i liked Ridder for a second round pick.
so how do ya'll like your horses thus far ? anyone watch any of them play besides Pickett ?
Sam Howell - 19 / 34 (55.9%) ...267 yds...0 Tds...1 int...4 sacks.
Malik Willis - 13 / 28 (46.4%)...187 yds...1 td...0 ints...5 sacks
Desmond Ridder - 20 /35 ((57.1%)...246 yds...2 tds...0 ints...0 sacks
Matt Coral - 10 / 24 (41.7%)...69 yds...0 tds...0 ints...2 sacks.
on a side note josh dobbs is having a nice preseaon for the shit stains.
24 / 33 (72.7%) ...249 yds ...1 td...0 ints...0 sacks.

Re: how are the "other" rookies doing ?
Someone started a thread like this but from what it sounds like (and looks like), Ridder is doing fairly well and having a good camp. I don’t think any of these guys are in line to start though are they?

Re: how are the "other" rookies doing ?
I always thought Dobbs had what it takes but never really had opportunities to start. I remember one game we had a big matchup against the ravens and Ben was out for a play, and he had to start a drive from his own end zone. He came in and converted a 2nd and 20 during a big game, and coming in cold.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7J8I5CFxjA
he's definitely got the smarts for the position, ben always consulted with dobbs on the sideline after drives instead of rudolph

actually Dobbs is 35-53-2-0 the stat above was in 1 game .... 66% best on the team by a full 10% and the clear cut starter in many peoples minds as Brisset has just 13 completions , Rsen 17 and Watson 1............
add in 6 carries for 53 yards 3 first downs and 1 TD and a 2pt conversion

Would love to see Dobbs start and get a shot…wish it were with a different team.

Pickett 10/14 (71.4%) for 90 yards, i don't believe he got sacked.
Limited play this week, only 3 drives. Accuracy is obviously a step above the other rookies, which IMO is the most important part of being a QB. I think so far, you have to say Kenny Pickett is the best out of the rookie QB class by a big margin at this point.
Ridder looks like he can be an NFL quarterback, the guy has a big-play arm. Though to be in that good-elite category that accuracy needs to improve, less than 60% don't cut it.

Re: how are the "other" rookies doing ?
The Redskins are 2-0 under Howell to start the 2023 season and he is 3-0 as a starter in this league in games that count

Why are we bagging on Howell? We have enough issue ourselves without bringing karma into it.

But Howell didn’t play that well if you watched it you would’ve seen that. Those numbers are deceiving. One good drive at the end. By the way, who is the OC for the Redskins? I mean I would expect someone who knows something about football to realize the situations are totally different…maybe not?

you play within the system you have .... nobody ever claimed life was fair ...
as for Howell no I didn't see the game it wasn't on here but what I do know is he had to have played well more than 1 drive to get those kind of numbers and take the eagles to OT , they scored 31 points ..... he threw for almost 300 yards and ran for 40 more ... he didnt turn the ball over and last I knew the eagles were considered opportunistic on def ....

He didn’t. I watched most of it.
As,for the systems, Howell wouldn’t do well in Pittsburgh’s system either and you know it.

No. Which proves the point that trying to compare the two is silly.

Re: how are the "other" rookies doing ?
Sam Howell vs the Bears 37 |
/51 |
comp % 72.6 |
yards 388 |
ypa7.6 |
Tds 2 |
int 1 |
Long 41 |
RTG 99.1 |
as a side note Steelers have only has ONE 300 yard offensive production as a team in Matt Canada's time here ....
-
Re: how are the "other" rookies doing ?
nice numbers...
maybe because they were already down 17-3 at the half, and ended losing by 20 to a 0-3 Bears team.
388 passing / 29 rushing (Mr. Howell lead the ream with 19) ouch
At the end of the day, a loss is a loss

I watched the whole game last night. Howell looked pretty good, athletic and tough. IMO dude is a replica of Baker Mayfield. Bears were in bend don’t break defense the whole game and the last drive I’m guessing Howell was 6-7 for 70 yards where every throw was to wide open guy 5 yards dow the field. So yeah those stats mean shit. Fields looked amazing. And yeah both there offenses were more dynamic and productive than Steelers.
