Tim Benz: Photo of dejected Ben Roethlisberger conjures bad Pittsburgh sports memory
I saw that photo of Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger sitting alone on the bench at the end of the team’s 48-37 playoff loss to the Cleveland Browns.

You came put that picture through time travel to 2022.

Dan Marino's last game was an utter humiliation.
Joe Montana's career ended exiled from San Francisco, where he became a legend.
Johnny Unitas finished his career as a backup for the Chargers.
All legendary quarterbacks. With arguably more accolades and accomplishments than Ben, their careers ended less than favorably. If anything Ben has it better than most.

Umm... not “all.” Seems I recall Elway winning 2 Super Bowls in a row. Others weren’t an embarrassment.

Yep, definitely the exception to the rule, almost all great QB's lose the last game of their career.

THIS is why Ben comes back. His childhood idol is John Elway (it’s why Ben wears #7)... and Ben wants to go out on top like Elway did.

Elway had Terrell Davis and a good OL to help him out, Ben has neither.

Elway had Terrell Davis, an offensive line, and a reduced role in the offense.
Ben doesn't have the former two, and his ego is too big to do the latter.
